Hi I thought I'd say a quick welcome before I move you vote on the GNAA page. I'm sure you underdstand it's nothing personal. Anyway back to the welcome, I've taken the liberty of removing the html tags from you userpage. We try to avoid html if possible and use the much simpler wikimarkup - less scary for non geeks. Hi Steve, I saw your comment on the sandbox in the village pump. Yes you are correct in that every user writes in his own "sandbox", infact, every user has a whole user-space to themselves.

Actually, I wasn't "right" about that -- I didn't know about the personal namespace, or its suitability as a "sandbox". Thanks. Steve Summit 16:02, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

So for instance if you were writing an article about, ehhh, lets say Telephone poles, you could write it at User:Ummit/Telephone poles (for more information about this, see Wikipedia:User page). This is perfectly allright, many users (including me) have done it. If you want it deleted afterwards you can request an admin to do that (again, see Wikipedia:User page). As for the Sandbox being wiped, yeah that happens much like a real sandbox (I mean, it's not like you could build any cool castles in them or anything). If you want to retrieve something from it after it has been wiped, press the history tab at the top of the page, and then press the link with your last edit, and bobs your uncle (ie. that is your text, right there). Wikipedia saves every version of every page in the history. Any more questions, feel free to ask. gkhan 13:45, July 14, 2005 (UTC)

You may have a problem with your browser

Your edit to Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style[1] seems to have done more than you envisaged. If you do not adjust your settings, you will end up destroying links, including links versions of Wikipedia in other languages. Could I ask what browser you are using? Yipes. You're right. I don't know how that happened. Thanks for catching and fixing that. It was probably due to more than just my browser -- you'll note that of my three nearly consecutive edits to that talk page in rapid succession, only one of them broke anything -- but rather some bobble in my cut-and-paste out of the edit box to emacs and back. In answer to your question, I've been using Netscape 4.7. (Please don't scold me; yes, I know it's old; there are reasons.) But even as we speak, I'm in the process of trying to build Firefox for my machine. (It hasn't been trivial; I've been at it on and off for a couple of days.) Steve Summit 23:40, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

All unknowing

(Carried on from other talk page for politeness.)
I haven't followed the entire brouhaha, but when it comes down to it, you're right, that's exactly what he's saying -- in the case where that "input from others" boils down to "we're so annoyed that the article on topic X was badly written that we want to delete it and never see another article on topic X again". Suppose that, several months later "when everybody has forgotten what all the huffing and puffing was about", someone else came along and, all unknowing, created a brand-new, better-written article on topic X. Would that be a problem? If not, how different is it if Tony does it? (Sus, sorry for encroaching on your talk page with this little third-party discussion...)

1. If you had followed the entire brouhaha, you'd have seen that it has been pointed out numerous times that re-writing a decent article from scratch would be no problem.
2. The differance would be that contributor "All unknowing" would neither be thumbing his nose at the contributions and opinions of others nor abusing admin privledges to do so.
3. This has come out much nastier and sharper than intended, sorry. Please create mental image of you pushing cream pie into my face to lessen the sting. ^_^

Hi there! I didn't notice your message on my talk page until just now, since it was somewhere in the middle. Anyway the Tony issue still stands, and he is as unwilling as ever to listen to anybody else. I have no objection to mediation, but he already rejected Susvolans's and Sjakalle's offers of such, and walked away from Theresa's. So it seems a bit fruitless. What I was trying to say (and I think it's fixed now, open to comments) is that our mission is to give access to anyone on earth - the total sum of human knowledge. Hence, merely doing someone else's homework on the Reference Desk for them does not fulfill that purpose, as opposed to helping them understand a concept. -- Natalinasmpf 19:55, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
