Breen

edit

Hi. I don't think the Startrek Breens were named after me. It's a common Irish surname. JimBreen 01:05, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it looks like someone found a good version and reverted to it. If the user restores the fluff, I'll report it to the noticeboard. --Coredesat 22:26, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi - Sorry

edit

Hey there Sazoria, I'm sorry I didn't get back to you, It's a long story.

I noticed you didn't have a welcome template - which everyone absolutely MUST have, but can't give themselves. I found an extra-special one for you - notice anything at the bottom?

I'll go get the link to the time right now - be right backNinaEliza 08:02, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I wouldn't say I'm "possessed"; I just happen to like it. --Sasoriza 08:07, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I didn't actually customize the template, I found it in a list of templates at the kindness campaign. I don't think they meant possessed like you might be interpreting it - it's more of Britishism.
So I can't find the frippin' page the time was on. I'm thinking you wanted to be able to tell other people, and not just use it yourself. I'll keep looking - I'm bound to find it. NinaEliza 08:44, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Help with Monobook.js

edit

On another wiki, I'm trying to rearrange links on the left sidebar nav menu, and also add "alt" tags (so to speak) for new options--the rollout descriptions when your mouse hovers over the links. To do this, I get the impression I have to alter MediaWiki:Monobook.js.

Let me explain by showing the original layout:

ta['n-mainpage'] = new Array('z','Visit the Main Page');
ta['n-portal'] = new Array('','About the project, what you can do, where to find things');
ta['n-currentevents'] = new Array('','Find background information on current events');
ta['n-recentchanges'] = new Array('r','The list of recent changes in the wiki.');

The layout I'm attempting to perform:

ta['n-mainpage'] = new Array('z','Visit the main page');
ta['n-recentchanges'] = new Array('r','List of recent changes');
ta['n-randompage'] = new Array('x','Load a random page');
ta['n-help'] = new Array('','Find help');
ta['n-policies'] = new Array('','Policies and guidelines');
ta['n-announcements'] = new Array('','Special announcements and news on current events');
ta['n-portal'] = new Array('','forums');
ta['n-faqs'] = new Array('','Frequently asked questions');

Now, my questions:

  • Do I need to add special letters after new Array(' as in the above examples? (I get the impression it isn't necessary, since 'z', 'r' and 'x' handle "Special:" pages... but thought I'd ask. The new links would not be "Special:" pages in this sense.)
  • Will rearranging those letters, as well as the link order (as in the second example) wreck (or wreck irrevocably) the text/software interface, and/or hamper site navigation? Can such changes be rolled back, if so? (I'm a sysop, but not sure what'll happen upon making such changes.) Or, possibly, do those letters need to be moved to "line up" with the new link order?
  • Are other changes necessary elsewhere in System Messages, say, on Common.js or anywhere else, in tandem with the above changes, to make the new navigation and hover descriptions work?
  • Can periods be removed from the end of the description lines; e.g., list of recent changes in the wiki. (period) to list of recent changes in the wiki (no period), and can semicolons be inserted between the words without causing trouble?
  • Lastly, am I just wasting my time, and this is something that can only be done by techs?

If you can help me out, it'd be great, and I'd be ever so appreciative. Assuming you can answer these questions, I hope you won't mind if I need to ask more. Or, if you can point me to a good link that'll tell me everything I need to know, or to another editor who can answer these questions, I'd be grateful for that too. Thank you. --Sasoriza 15:12, 2 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I recommend you ask this question at the MediaWiki website or on Freenode IRC in the #mediawiki channel. This is not a Wikipedia question. —Centrxtalk • 02:57, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

For anyone who comes across this and may need similar help, here is a response I received from Simetrical on #mediawiki-tech at irc.freenode.org:

1) The letter is for an accesskey. If you don't want one, leave it off.
2) Changing declaration order isn't a problem. Changing accesskeys will confuse people at worst.
3) No other changes are necessary.
4) Periods and semicolons are fine, just be careful with forward slash and apostrophe.
5) You can do it, that's why it's there.

I'm sorry for the late answer. To be honest, I'm not the best at monobook, but if you still need some help, I can find you someone more expert in this field. NCurse work 06:27, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I found it!

Help:Magic words.

I know doodley squat about monobook. I messed around with it when I was trying to set up an edit counter, and it never worked out. If I find somebody in my travels who looks good with it, I'll let you know.

Happy Editing! NinaEliza 21:31, 8 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey - check this out . I've got no idea where it is - I stole it off a user page:).NinaEliza 03:52, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
