History

According to the builder the line is a fictional route somewhere in New South Wales and is represented by the model as it was in the late 1930s. The line starts at the junction station of Settle, a medium-sized town on a NSWGR mainline. At the other end of the line, up on a rich volcanic plateau is the farming community of Carlisle. There is one intermediate station, Mountain Flats.

The Line

At the junction station of Settle the branch line part of the yard, a roundhouse and an industrial shunting area are to be modelled. There will be an exchange siding with the mainline also. From here the line progress's up a 1 in 40 grade to the town of Mountain Flats (this is a play on words of the well known railway town of Valley Heights). At Mountain flats is a small spur to a coal mine and a passing loop to allow trains to take refuge or pass each other. A shorter distance of dead level track progresses through the fields of the district to Carlisle, the terminus. The yard at Carlisle serves the industries of the area including the dairy factory. Also here is a small loco depot and carriage sidings.

Layout

The layout is in a 5 by 4 metre room and will, when finished take up three quarters of this space. So far track and bench work have been completed from Carlisle through mountain flats to about halfway down the grade towards Settle. Code 100 track has been used and the layout has primarily been designed for operations. For approximately 18 months the layout has been capable of operations between Carlisle and Mountain flats.

Locos

The line currently has three operational locomotives. Two C32 class and one C35 class make up the operational roster. The flagship locomotive is C35 class 3526 which was the first purchased. This was followed by C32s 3229 and 3313. A Bo-Bo diesel engine and chassis is currently being converted to represent quasi 400 type rail motor. This loco will remain on the layout as a supplement to the steam operations but will never be used unless needed. In addition several other old or non prototypical locomotives a kept for parts. As of March 2010 the line is also looking to model a Z21 class Baldwin. Future locomotive purchases may be made depending on what models become available. All steam locomotives are equipped or will be fitted with DCC sound decoders.

Rolling stock

Rolling-stock is mostly prototypical to the period and to branch line operations. A varied fleet of passenger carriages for use on many different types of trains is being put together. Goods rolling-stock mostly consists of four-wheel open wagons such as S trucks.

Operations

The layout is designed to be operated in a closely prototypical way. The realistic steam operations is central to the layout and it is designed to show that Australian railways are very good to model from an operators perspective. With the use of "exchange sidings" at the junction end of the branch there is no need for any staging and as such this means all train movements can be prototypical. The practise of staging is not required between operation sessions. While operating the line an adapted Staff and Ticket system is used to represent safe working on the single track main. Operation of yards is controlled by semaphore signals and other signal boards. When the track is completed as far as Settle a timetable will be drawn up and a car card and Waybill system for goods will be implemented.
