Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia. While objective prose about beliefs, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. Mean as custard (talk) 18:12, 15 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Ritchie333 I don't know now what the problem is, when I have agreed to the terms of the previous admins why are other issues cropping up?. There was no "edit war" going on, user:mean as custard was instead of removing promotional material, may have unintentionally removed the logos, pictures and student chapter details. Now, all I would like is to edit wiki pages as per wikipedia's guidelines.

Decline reason:

Firstly, you need to change your username to a name that is unconnected to any organisation or product, so for your next unblock request you should use the text:
{{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}}

Secondly, I am unconvinced that you should be editing articles where you have a significant conflict of interest. PhilKnight (talk) 13:52, 18 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

edit

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Diannaa (talk) 03:14, 16 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Why am I being blocked?. I am the person appointed by the college to verify and edit the wikipedia page which was recently a stub article. The User: Mean as Custard has been vandalising the College's page by removing vital information. It is not promotional material. Is the college logo an advertisement? Why is this sort of discriminatory behaviour vetted out towards our college wikipedia page, I thought wikipedia was meant for equality of information. As a request I would like wikipedia to unblock my account and restrict editing from user: mean as custard.

Decline reason:

Mean as custard is a long serving editor who is upholding our standards, and is no vandal. You were adding promotional material which made the article read like a promotional brochure rather than an encyclopaedia article. You may be appointed by the college, but that means to us that you should not be editing the article - see WP:COI. Note that the college does not own the article and has no right to decide what goes in it or how it is worded. You are also blocked because your user name is in violation of our policy as it appears to represent an organisation - see WP:USERNAME as referred to in the blocking notice above. Wikipedia is not "meant for equality of information". It is an encyclopaedia, not free web space, social media or a directory. I am not going to restrict Mean as custard, and nor will any other administrator here. Peridon (talk) 11:01, 16 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Note I have moved your request down here as it is standard protocol on Wikipedia talk pages to work at the end of a thread, and to start new threads below the existing ones. Peridon (talk) 11:03, 16 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Thank you for your inputs Peridon. I can assure you there is no conflict of interest. As mentioned earlier I too wouldn't want to add promotional material or advertisements. My sole purpose was to verify whether the information provided on the wiki page is correct or not. An important question I had asked earlier and you did not respond to - Whether adding the college logo is a promotional act? and for all the good work user: mean as custard is doing I appreciate it, but constantly removing college logo from the wiki page is I believe not as per wikipedia editorial guidelines. Please feel free to get in touch with me as I'm all ears for constructive criticism but am against discriminatory behaviour.

Decline reason:

I'm not sure how to reconcile "appointed by the college" and "no conflict of interest"; surely you see the agency conflict here? The material you added was qualitative in nature, and came across as simple puffery. Attempting to frame this as "discrimination" is disingenuous. As noted, you will need to select a new username, but you'll also need to show some evidence that you understand the difference between facts and adcopy. Kuru (talk) 14:34, 17 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

To explain 'conflict of interest', we assume at first that editors here are working to build the encyclopaedia up. People who are here to promote the interests of other organisations have a conflict of interest because their outside interest (often their pay packet or salary) is not the interest of Wikipedia (neutral voluntary unpaid editing). You have no conflict of interest with the college. You do have a conflict of interest if you want to (or are told to) add material that we consider promotional. Promotional editing is not allowed. No matter what your boss wants, it is NOT allowed. Peridon (talk) 17:19, 17 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

First of all I would like to clarify I am not on the college's payroll but am a student who voluntary took the task to properly put in genuine details in the article. I do understand the "qualitative" issues you are talking about, can you pls let me know that enlisting names of professional student chapters (which are recognized by the relevant governing bodies) present in the college is promotional? and also adding the college's logo promotional, because every university/school wikipedia page has a college logo and some have generic/general photographs of the college posted. Thats the only editing I did. So pls let me know what I should add ?

Decline reason:

This username violates Wikipedia's username policy, particularly the parts on names of organizations and usernames implying shared use. You will not be unblocked unless you suggest a new username that clarifies that only one person - you - has access to this account. Secondly, the logo was something of collateral damage in the back-and-forth reverting; that wasn't promotional. But phrases such as "very well laid out", "spacious", "very sophisticated" and so on - those are promotional. I'm rather concerned that you seem to have forgotten those parts of your edits. On an entirely unrelated note, I just realized that the Wikipedia article is copy-pasted from the college website in violation of copyright. I'll delete it for that reason. Huon (talk) 23:35, 17 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I agree with admin:Huon, the phrases are not to the point and should be removed, if you would be kind enough to check those edits were made not by me and existed for quite some time since the page was created. I just added the student chapters and 3 images - logo, college entrance & facade. I will edit out the "spacious","very well laid out" and other such promotional connotations. I believe we do understand each other and lets end the discussion at that, since a lot of time and energy has been used to clarify these issues.

Decline reason:

What you have failed to disclose thus far is that you were engaged in an edit war with Mean as custard. In your short editing career you have encountered problems with advertising, copyright violations and inappropriate dispute resolution, and that leads me to conclude that, unfortunately, Wikipedia is simply a bad fit for what you wish to do. I recommend you spend six months without editing, during which time you thoroughly review all policies and guidelines carefully. Then use the standard offer procedure to request an unblock, and use the Article wizard to create any future articles. In my view, any unblock request before that time will be unsuccessful and may involve talk page access being disabled. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:45, 18 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
