Questions

Hey, these are the first of a few questions I have for you.

  1. Do you prefer being called Sasha or Red?
    A) Sasha! :3
  2. What is your time zone? (So I have a general idea of the difference between our editing periods)
    A) Umm, I think it's UTC -2? Though I'm holidaying in Vancouver right now. :D I used to live in Singapore (which was GMT +8), so yeah. What about you? :D
I'm at UTC -5 (Minnesota) although I spend 3/4 of my year in Philadelphia
  3. What are your goals on Wikipedia?
    A) Hmm, probably to get my favorite films' articles promoted to GA or FA. Most of them are stubs, or start-class. I mean, it'll be hard, but I can try! And maybe to become an admin, but eh, we'll see in three-four years.

I also have a question for you. Wikipedia uses welcome templates to welcome new editors. You received User:Buster7/Welcomes#WikiGuide Welcome another one is {{Welcome}} a final one is {{Welcome only}} (the last one is a bit of a work in progress). Of the three of those, which would you most rather receive as a new editor? Ryan Vesey 19:38, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'd say the first one. :D Has all the good links and such. Red Hat On Head (talk) 19:52, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Do you think it is likely that most editors will follow all of the links? I recently created the {{Welcome only}} template due to a comment an editor made. You can see an essay with that comment at Wikipedia:First contact. The concept is that an editor's first contact should be just about letting them know they are welcome here. Ideally, that editor will continue to contribute and ask questions about policies. What would you think of it if it also contained a link to Help:ContentsRyan Vesey 20:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Not about editors following all the links, but it's quite convienient for me. But it should include a link to the Teahouse, because that was very helpful for me. The Help thing should also be included. :3 Red Hat On Head (talk) 20:12, 1 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have another question for you. Do you know other languages? Ryan Vesey 21:02, 2 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yup! Well, I know Hindi, like, romanized Hindi. Not the traditional stuff. That's cause I watch a lot of Hindi films. And I learned Chinese in school. Though I dunno Urdu. Or stuff like that. I'm best in English, really. Red Hat On Head (talk) 20:19, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Also, how do you find out your edit count, and the number of days you've been editing? Red Hat On Head (talk) 20:20, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
The easiest way for you to find your edit count is to click "My contributions" at the top of your screen, then click "edit count" at the very bottom of the page. It will give you your count plus a nice little piechart of your contribs. In addition, if you create User:Red Hat On Head/EditCounterOptIn.js with anything (I think I chose the letter a for mine) it will allow you to see monthly contribs and your most edited pages. As far as the number of days you've been editing, I suggest adding this to your userpage. If you want, I can create a special version that is a different color that you can use. Ryan Vesey 20:28, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
This user has been on Wikipedia for 11 years, 11 months and 29 days.
Oh, that's cool! I can do that! And yes, my userpage is very... um... empty. How do you guys make nice userpages? Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:00, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
You could consider adding the following to the top your user page:

{| cellpadding="10" cellspacing="8" style="width: 100%; background-color: Cornsilk; border: 1px solid #888; box-shadow: 1px 1px 6px #444; border-radius: 1.5em; vertical-align: top;"
|-
| style="background-color: LightSteelBlue; background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom, LightSteelBlue, PowderBlue); border: 1px solid #8a8; box-shadow: 1px 1px 6px #454; border-radius: 1em; vertical-align: top;" rowspan="3" |

You can modify the colors cornsilk, LightSteelBlue, and PowderBlue and make it look however you want. Ryan Vesey 14:13, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
That was awesome! But how do you get the headers and all? Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:34, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
The code for that is at User:Ryan Vesey/Tabs. If you create a list of subpages you would like linked and find some icons you would like to use at Commons:Category:Nuvola icons I can help you put one together. Ryan Vesey 14:38, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I remember seeing some premade ones somewhere last time, do you know where? Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:43, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I did a search and found Wikipedia:User page design center, specifically Wikipedia:User page design center/Menus and subpages might be of interest to you. Ryan Vesey 14:45, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I like #16, but how do I take out Archives and put in sandbox instead? And what's the gallery for? Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:51, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
A gallery could be used for many things. Some people put all the free images they upload in the gallery, other editors put a bunch of pictures they like into a gallery. One editor has a gallery of signatures that he thinks are cool. What do you think of User:Ryan Vesey/Template sandboxRyan Vesey 15:22, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ooh, that's great! Thank you! Maybe do you think we can replace 'gallery' with userboxes? Red Hat On Head (talk) 15:26, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

What do you think of it now? Ryan Vesey 15:34, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Awesome! Thank you so much! How does the e-mail thing work, though? Red Hat On Head (talk) 15:48, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
That could be an issue because you don't have email enabled. If you go to Special:Preferences there is a checkbox for enable email from other users. It allows them to discuss something more private or only tangentially related to Wikipedia. If you don't want to enable e-mail, you might want to change that. Ryan Vesey 15:51, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I got that! ;D Enabled it. One more question - I found some old Filmfare magazines, can I scan the covers and uplod them here or no? Red Hat On Head (talk) 16:02, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Unless there was an exceptional situation (like an article on a specific issue) I would say no. They would all be non-free magazine covers. Ryan Vesey 16:10, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Aww, I thought they'd qualify as free because I own the magazines. Sigh. Red Hat On Head (talk) 16:15, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Nope, copyright law is pretty restrictive. In fact, if a professional photographer took a picture of you and you purchased it, you wouldn't be able to upload it because he retains the copyright. Ryan Vesey 16:16, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, that's just stupid. :P Red Hat On Head (talk) 16:21, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
I still don't know the answer to Q8, is it okay if I pass? :( -a little busy right now because I'm scrambling to put together a tribute to Shammi Kapoor- Red Hat On Head (talk) 16:47, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yep, I'll correct what you have soon and we can start with the next lesson. I'll try to readdress the question before we get to the final test just to make sure you understand it. Ryan Vesey 18:02, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ooh, I have a question. If I make a sketch of an actor, using a photograph as a reference, will the sketch be mine and can I release it into the public domain? Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:03, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm so sorry, my watchlist is so long I never commented here. You wouldn't be able to use that sketch because it would be a derivative work of the photo. Sorry about that. If you were able to make a sketch based on memory, or one that wasn't based on an image I believe that would work. Ryan Vesey 12:35, 29 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh, darn! I'm just so desperate to get a picture up on Wiki... a picture of an actor when they were young. Call me shallow, but I always look at Wikipedia when it comes to films. And... y'know, if my friends and all actually look up my favorite actors (Wishful thinking, but it's happened before and I nearly fainted), or, well, some newbie even, I want them to see the actors when they were handsome. Not old and frail and... yeah. And those Indian editors are particularly strict about pictures. You post one non-free picture, and poof, before you can say 'troll', you get creamed and the picture's gone. Red Hat On Head (talk) 20:25, 29 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry!

Sorry I haven't been on lately! We went on vacation and there was no internet there. Vancouver was fun though! :D Red Hat On Head (talk) 20:18, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sasha! Glad to see you back. I'm glad you had a fun vacation. Ryan Vesey 20:28, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for just disappearing though! I'm kinda feeling miserable because today is the first anniversary of Shammi Kapoor's death, and one of my other favorite actors, Rajesh Khanna passed away recently. :( Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:32, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Aww :( sounds like you need a movie watching marathon! Ryan Vesey 14:33, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I was going to watch a film today, but my cats are all snuggled with me, so that will have to wait. :P Red Hat On Head (talk) 14:35, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
