Your bot

I note your bot patrols the categories in Category:Wikipedia category redirects. Is there any way you can get it to patrol Category:Protected deleted categories and remove and articles from the categories listed in there? They are all categories that have been deleted and are subject to regular recreation. Steve block Talk 23:51, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

I should be able to get my bot to clear out articles' references to categories in Category:Protected deleted categories without too much trouble. I'll work on it when I get a moment (which may not be this week).

recent change to category on: HMCS Shearwater (ship)

The category of Canadian Armed Forces is still a valid category for HMCS Shearwater (ship). She was commissioned and saw service in The Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Armed Forces (Tri-Service) and later on in the Canadian Forces (Naval Element). There are various eras of the Canadian Military and changing the category to just Military of Canada creates a too large genre of 250 years, whereas each specific phase of Canadian Military history is unique. Please let me know if I should have used the duscussion page specific to HMCS Shearwater (ship), or this forum...Still trying to get a handle on the niceties involved. Help disambiguating

Hello, I've seen you've been editing UK related articles, and there is a current need to help disambiguate the term British. At Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links, British is the disambiguation pages with the most links (by far), and ideally there should be no links to disambiguation pages. So if possible, please take a look at the links, and try to disambiguate the links to a more correct location. It's actually pretty easy, and most get disambiguated to United Kingdom. We have listed Styris' 53 with 13 fours as an example of an innings with a high percentage of boundaries. Last Saturday, Mark Pettini scored 114* against Leics' declaration bowling, which was made entirely of fours and sixes. Someone posted in rec.sport.cricket today that the next best in the 100% category is Thilina Kandamby's innings of 52 against Zim A. Will one of this be worth including in the article instead of Styris ?

In the Essex - Leics match, Darrell Robinson might have made it to the "most runs in an over" list but I couldn't find the details in any match report. Tintin (talk) 06:35, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I've just added a book to the References section and unfortunately it's thrown out the neat fit around the picture; I've been tinkering about but can't work out how to sort it yet, so maybe you could help with that? Brahms and Schumann

Hi there! In fact, when Brahms met Schumann he had only completed the second and fourth movements of the Op.5 Piano Sonata - movements 1, 3 and 5 were written during October '53 in Düsseldorf. On the other hand the Op.1 Sonata - which was completed AFTER the op.2 Sonata - is called 'Fourth Sonata' on the manuscript. Presuming that op.2 is 'Third Sonata', that means that Brahms had written four sonatas and was part-way through a fifth when Schumann first met him.Cenedi 18:20, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Graeme Hick

Thanks for the copyedits to the rewritten Hick article, most of which I think are handy improvements on what I originally wrote; my comment about Hick's hundred hundreds was certainly ripe for removal, not only because of Ramprakash but because it's bordering on being a personal opinion. There are one or two exceptions - I think "before the series was out" is slightly better than "before the last match of the series", for example - but I'm certainly not going to go reverting them!

The only thing I have changed is the passage mentioning Atherton's remark about the Sydney declaration. Given that he was commenting after his retirement, and was commenting on how he would have approached this specific happening again rather than what he might do in the future, I think "would not have taken such a decision again" is the correct form, rather than "would not take..." I've added "in his autobiography" to the text to make it clearer that he was commenting some years afterwards, not straight after the game.

Finally, I'm flattered by your remark on the edit summary! User:Dar2020 must take a portion of the credit too, since he was the one to inspire this rewrite in the first place, and he contributed a lot of useful ideas and references. Loganberry (Talk) 15:12, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

I would be honoured to see the Hick article considered for featured status at some point, and I'll confess that the thought of submitting it in the future had crossed my mind. As you picked out, the main stumbling block at the moment is the lack of pictures: there are a couple of Hick on Flickr, but unfortunately under an unusable licence (cc-nc-nd-2.0). America is not a country

RobertG, I don’t remember seeing you edit a lot of the saints articles, so I don't know why you felt it necessary to change my edits. Back in July, which got shot down, not once but twice in a week. There was hardly any discussion, nor was there really a chance to build a consensus. I was basically shouted down twice, by a group of people not involved in this area.

America is not a country, it is a continent. If you look at Saints by country, you will see that all the sub-cats (with a couple of broad exceptions are by country or nationality). America is not a country and, the category pattern as currently set up under Saints by country matches the commons, Spanish and Italian versions.

I find it amusing that we are even having this discussion, because if you look at Category:American saints, you'll see that it is a sub-cat of both Category:American people and Category:Religion in the United States – there is no consistency. I'm trying to make it consistent, and remove a U.S. bias.

I'm going to go ahead and change the categories back to what they were. If you really feel strongly about it, please bring it up at the CFR and let’s deal with it there. --evrik 18:52, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

WP:CFDS says that renaming between "American" and "United States" does not qualify for speedy renaming; and even CFDS has been bypassed here. There are enough "American" categories out there to make me think "America" must be an accepted name for the USA. I do not have a full understanding of this issue (not being American), and so I prefer to go by Wikipedia consensus. When I found the new redirect had been created, I naturally checked previous CFDs, and found them not in favour of your change. This is the sole reason why I changed it back. If there is a CFD consensus for this move, then let me know and of course I will gladly get the bot to help move the articles.

It is my view that if a CFD rename nomination is "shot down in flames" (see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006_July_3#Category:American_saints and Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006_July_11#Category:American_saints_to_Category:United_States_saints) it is not correct to go ahead anyway some time later. I'm sorry if this seems officious to you. Believe me, if you can get consensus for the consistency you seek I will gladly help you implement it, but there seems to be no such consensus at the moment. --RobertG ♬ talk 09:11, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Robert I apologize for the Nazi comment. Thank you for your response. Just to clear up any misconception, I do not know Tim Biskup or Mike Biskup personally or professionally. Tim is a world wide known Lowbrow/Pop Surrealist artist. The Duck Butter article was meant to establish his early career. Some of his first commercial and fine art was created for the covers and inserts to these record releases. Makemi was very generous to put the page onto my user page to let me polish it for resubmission. I only just noticed this rename request after you did it, but as per the fresh water article (and its talk page), "fresh water" is a noun, "freshwater" is an adjective. Things have gone a bit pear-shaped all of a sudden, and I thought I'd better post here directly rather than just on the pages where process is followed.

An inexperienced user noticed our conversation on my talk page, but his well-meaning attempts at boldness have gone a little awry. Instead of getting the page and category renamed, he's created new ones and cut/pasted data to suit; See Category:Freshwater islands of Scotland/Category:Fresh water islands of Scotland and List of freshwater islands in Scotland/List of fresh water islands in Scotland. In the case of the latter, I think an administrative merge is required now that another user has made edits to the new page, but I'm not sure what should be done about the categories. Thanks for pointing it out (and sorting it out). It's a hang-over from before cfd categories were subst:ed. The problem was it ran through the parent category (and moved this category's CFD categories out of the subst:ed template in the process) before it ran through this one. Got so tied up reading the page I put in as an ext link, that I ran out of time and never got back to it. Visiting the UK

P.S.: We are likely going to be in Durham and environs for a couple of weeks in July, for a conference my wife is attending. I'd be glad for any thoughts on what to look for (and look out for); we have never been to that part of the country but are very excited, and I'm afraid we may bite off more than we can chew as far as sight-seeing goes. There are day-trips built into the conference to the Western Isles and a couple of other places (incl. Edinburgh, I believe), for example, but since those are all "scripted" by the conference folks I don't worry so much about them. But I am a long-time Swallows & Amazons fan and hope to take my family to Coniston to see that area...but am not certain of how easy it will be to get there from Durham, or of how crowded it might be at that time of year. You're very welcome. No, I'm just working with the two "current versions" table I mentioned above (and pagelinks, this time, but not regularly so). Specifically that's http://download.wikipedia.org/enwiki/20061031/enwiki-20061031-page.sql.gz and http://download.wikipedia.org/enwiki/20061031/enwiki-20061031-categorylinks.sql.gz. Let me just check I understand the requested tweak correctly: you want the categories on User:Alai/redirect_art_cat, but without the duplication of categories, and the articles?

The cross-namespace redirects do seem pretty broken, so you it might be OK just to remove them. In some cases it might be better to add a link to a "see also" section, in others there may be a related category to "repair" it too. In an ideal world, other editors would get the hint and do that themselves if the bot removes them, but I wouldn't be shocked if some low-level grumble about it.

The "WCD" list is obviously redundant if your 'bot is going to scan all of those categories anyway; I thought you were considering modifying it to use only those with 'signs of habitation'. Tradeoff between extra (bot) work, and extra 'lag' in picking up errors, I suppose. Alai 18:40, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Article name change

Hi Robert! just to ensure I get this right I thought it best to check with you. I have just noticed that the Milnsbridge article has been incorrectly titled, It is a small village close to me and links from the Huddersfield article, the correct spelling is Milnesbridge. Would this be better followed up as a page name change request, or in view as Milnsbridge (without the 'e') is the local pronunciation and assumed spelling, would it be better as a redirect. Well! I Think a can of worms may open here :). I used to live, briefly, on Dowker Street, opposite a company called Taylor Valves. Their website shows them to be in Milnesbridge, as do several others in Google. I just went into the local council website and used their visitor car parking search facility. Visitor info Parking the dropdown box in the search shows Milnesbridge. Yet elsewhere their own website also refers to both spellings on the main search facility. I have an old Kirklees street map which shows Milnsbridge plus another which has Milnesbridge. ??? I will follow this up locally before doing anything further on here. In addition to the change described, it also moved a bunch of categories down. Until I scroll down (using the diff tool in popups)), I thought the bot had deleted all categories and was considering reverting the change. (That is another feature of popups. I see that it has been decided that the existing category Category:Footballers who died tragically young should be deleted or renamed as above. At present the existing category is still "live". Can I simply move this or do I need to start from scratch? Either way, can you leave the existing category live for a day or two to give me time to deal with it - I will send you a note when it is done.

I suspect this article is bogus. It's hard to find out much about it. It could be a cross between cricket and soccer. Whether it has actually ever been played, or is merely a product of someone's fantasy, is hard to determine. Also, congrats on weeding entries by that User:Thugchildz, who is evidently a cricket fancier and has been messing with everything he can find that vaguely has anything to do with cricket. baseball all-star categories

Can you please stop the bot and reconsider? This is a very bad decision and didn't get appropriate consideration... the all-star categories by year were very useful. All of the baseball editors except Wknight in the CFD voted to keep, the categorization people were the only ones voting to merge. I think AWB removes duplicate categories automatically, doesn't it? I don't think it requires a regex. Historic Landmark Categories

Could you tell me what's going on with the elimination of supposed duplication of categories for historic landmarks? It's a bit confusing. I find that the pages to which these two category links lead are quite different. Just as one example, "Category:Registered Historic Places in Georgia (US state)" contains 35 pages, while the Georgia section of the List of National Historic Landmarks by state (which contains the Georgia portion of the large category "Category:National Historic Landmarks of the United States") contains only 8 pages. The reason for this discrepancy is apparently the fact that (as it says on the National Historic Landmarks category page) "All NHLs are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but not all Register properties are NHLs." It looks to me as though Wikipedia has made the decision to eliminate a supposed duplicate category which is not in fact a duplicate at all, but a larger set. I first noticed this on the Fox Theatre (Atlanta) page, from which your robot recently removed the link to Registered Historic Places in Georgia, which is the larger category at the state level. If one or the other is to be eliminated, it ought to be the smaller one, though I don't think either of them can be removed without damaging the usefulness of the site. OK, thanks. I see what's going on now. Something is still confusing me about the "by state" page that links from the main list of "Category:National Historic Landmarks of the United States", though. In the main list, one of the first things you see is the link to the article on the Ahwahnee Hotel in California, but there is no mention of the Ahwahnee in the California section of the "by state" list. It turns out that lots of things on the main list aren't on the "by state" list. It seems as though the "by state" page would get the same content as the national list, and any article added to the category would automatically end up on both lists. Isn't there any way to get that to happen? Sometimes its useful to have a list by state rather than a national alphabetical list, but that's not really available if the lists don't have the same content. Accusation

Deleting a category in direct violation of the category guideline can either be interpreted as bad faith, ignoring of the consensus on how categories are treated, Soapboxing or general ignorance of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. As you are an admin, I saw it fit to rule out the likelihood of the first and last possibilities, as I assume good faith, expect it in return and generally expect an admin to be competent and knowledgable about how the Wiki community works if they were able to survive an RFA.

That leaves two possibilities, the two being interlinked. Soapboxing is the reason for circumventing consensus using admin authority. Soapboxing is, in this case, soapboxing for a particular view of how Wikipedia should function. User:ProveIt has a history of nominating ethnicity and nationality categories for deletion on the belief that articles on people should not be categorized by the ethnicity of the person in question. While a valid view, it is nonetheless true that such nominations violate consensus on how articles should be categorized and this is also demonstrated on the deletion review for the cat.

By closing debate on such a soapboxing CFD, you naturally become complicit in it, regardless of your personal views on the matter. If I were to advise you on how to deal with AFDs, I'd say review the history of the nominating user first, review what consensus is on the matter and consider informing the relevant Wikiprojects (if any) of the deletion nom before closing debate. This CFD was handled poorly, and I have reason to believe that the CFD itself is just a classic case of disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point. Kari Hazzard (T | C) 14:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

She appears to be invoking the the Wikipedian debater's irregular verb: I am editing in agreement with consensus, you are soapboxing for a position with which I disagree, s/he is disrupting Wikipedia to make a point.

On the grounds that I am not infallible, my normal practice in the face of personal criticism is to withdraw on the grounds that least said, soonest mended.
