Oops, sorry - should have made it clear: this is the nitrogen narcosis article with all of the content re-arranged to conform with WP:MOSMED. User:Gene Hobbs and I are looking at some of the diving-related articles to improve them. The title here doesn't matter - it's just my preference for the moment and we would need to merge it into nitrogen narcosis first before any thoughts of renaming in mainspace. I'm busy with work at the moment, but anyone is welcome to hack away at what is here to see if we can improve it to a decent standard, before thinking of merging into mainspace. Abstract "The psychomotor and cognitive abilities of experienced professional divers participating in training and experimental dives in a hyperbaric chamber were investigated during experiments at high ambient pressure of either air or hydrogen-helium-nitrogen-oxygen mixtures. Decrements in psychomotor ability were not as large as decrements in cognitive ability: manual dexterity was 2–16 %, number ordination 4–46% below control. To determine the respective roles of inert gases and pressure per se, the data were compared with lipid solubility theories of narcosis. This analysis indicated that impairment of cognitive ability was a consequence of the narcotic action of the inert gases, whereas impairment of motor ability was a consequence of the raised pressure per se."

PMID:7742709 "We investigated adaptation to nitrogen narcosis by compressing 11 highly experienced divers in a hyperbaric chamber to the equivalent of 54.6 meters of seawater once a day for 5 consecutive days. The behavioral component of narcosis was assessed with a serial choice-reaction time (RT) task, and the subjective component with a global magnitude estimate. Supplementary magnitude estimates were obtained with adjectives describing work effectiveness and body sensations. The results showed that there was no adaptation on the RT task, although learning was evident. In contrast, the global estimate dissociated from RT and showed clear adaptation by Day 3. The work effectiveness adjectives followed RT and did not show adaptation. Some body sensation adjectives showed clear adaptation, but others did not. These results lead to the conclusion that the anecdotal reports of adaptation by divers can probably be attributed to the subjective rather than the behavioral component of narcosis. Dissociation of these components suggests mediation by different brain mechanisms, and it is speculated that the gamma-aminobutyric acidA/benzodiazepine receptor complex, which has been implicated in both the anesthetic and anxiolytic properties of agents such as nitrous oxide, may be involved."

Article name?

The original article is Nitrogen narcosis, and the proposed article is Narcosis (diving). What is the WP standard for the article naming convention? The proposed article would have to be Nitrogen narcosis so that the history of contributors, etc. could be preserved. At a later date, I'd be happy to have a separate debate about changing the name. As you saw, I personally would prefer it not to be "Nitrogen narcosis", as we know that many other gases cause the effect as well, but many viewers would search for 'nitrogen narcosis' - so that may be the preferred title in the end. Inert gas narcosis is a candidate as well (a redirect at present); I just picked Narcosis (diving) as the most general I could think of for this user page. Any of them are fine with the WP naming conventions. The tiny technical advantage of Narcosis (diving) is that it looks like this: narcosis when you wiki-link it with an "empty pipe" like this: [[narcosis (diving)|]]. In the section Causes, how about moving the second paragraph (starting "The cause of narcosis is ...") to the front of the section?
