I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. Sorry, I'm new to all this and I confess I really don't understand. I want to put a photo of the artist on the page I have created. I thought I was doing right because I asked permission of the artist, told him what I wans doing and got sent this pic by his manager. Its a promo pic. I don't want to hassle them with legalities, insist they provide signed documentation, etc. I have access to various resources through doing extensive research, so could you please just tell me the simplest way of going about this so I can establish where I can get image from to use on this page. Thank you.

Thanks for trying to get a picture on there. The problem is, it's not enough to have permission to use a copyrighted picture on Wikipedia. Rather, the picture has to be released to the public domain, or under a type of "free" license. In other words, you need permission to use it just about anywhere. There are more details at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. This is because Wikipedia wants to make sure other people can copy its content and use it in other ways. Another way to get a picture of an artist on a website is to take a picture of him or her yourself, and then release it under a free license yourself. You may find WP:COPYREQ helpful in how to ask people for a license for an image and what to do with the email permission if it is received. The standard boilerplate release on the page is all they really need to fill out and email. And yes, it really does work. MECU≈talk 19:08, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I also deleted a reference to yourself as the author of the article... in my edit summary I mentioned WP:SELF, but then I realized that was wrong; WP:SELF doesn't say anything explicitly about not referring to article authors in articles. Thanks for your encouraging comments. I understand about making reference to myself as author. I just typed it, but I admit I thought better of it afterwards.

I was also half expecting lyrics wouldn't be accepted on here (shame), but if I got Gerard's manager (with whom I am in contact) to provide me with the GL licence thingy, could I post them then? I know they gave permission (probably informally) to someone to post them on YouTube. Also, I edit on LyricWiki. If I can post them there, why not here? There are also 100's of sites on the internet posting lyrics, so...?

I also saw a few notes amongst the edits for this page about 'unsourced' Whilst this did not result in the article being flagged (tho I would be interested to know why it didn't - lol), it did make me think more about this and further, that maybe this is something I should perhaps address. I guess the reason I didn't include more sources was because I am one of those that finds lots of 1, 2, 3, and 4's all over the page a bit tiresome and makes the page a little unreadable.

I'm unsure whether the picture is going to remain. I hope so, for I think it really adds interest to the page.

Well, yes, if Gerard's people release his lyrics on GFDL (is that what you meant?) then you could post them here. If you can really do that, my hat is off to you. I don't know your connections, but if you didn't have a special in with Gerard, I would say don't hold your breath. They would be giving up forever their ability to make money exclusively on those lyrics. If they did that, and then I published a book of poetry that included those lyrics (properly sourced, of course), and the book made a billion dollars, they wouldn't get a penny of that, as I understand it. Not that lyrics often make a lot of money independently of their songs, but still, musicians' managers seem to like to maintain full control over them. Lyric sites that don't make a lot of money fall into a gray area of copyright law as far as I can tell; I've heard people make conflicting arguments about their legal status.

As for the unsourced thing, you should read WP:V, but here's how it works in my understanding: Eventually, everything on Wikipedia should be sourced. Right now, not everything is sourced, and that's okay, but... anyone can remove anything that's not sourced. If it's something bad about a living person, they can, and should, remove it right away. If it's benign, it's considered polite to flag it first (individual facts or whole pages can be flagged), then wait a few days, then remove it. But even benign unsourced things can be removed right away if someone wants to. The more something sounds like it's probably true and like it could be sourced, the more likely people are to let it stay for now.

• As broad a scope as you can find is best. Most of the refs in Gerald McMahon seem to be All Music Guide and IMDb. I would suggest searching for anything you think is a reliable source -- online, print sources, whatever you can find. Hawk Nelson Is My Friend

Hi Redxx, I noticed that you recently moved the Hawk Nelson album article to "Hawk Nelson... Is My Friend!". I understand that is the album's more stylized title (on the cover), but I tend to disagree with your article move. Album articles are titled based on what the record label itself (on their website) and major reliable sources officially state the title as. "Hawk Nelson Is My Friend" is clearly the more official title, as numerous reliable sources confirm: BEC Recordings, Billboard, allmusic, Rolling Stone, Jesus Freak Hideout, Christian Music Today, etc. In this case, I think it'd be best to move the article back to its original title (which would require a WP:RM request), and have the lead line be something like this:

• Hawk Nelson Is My Friend, sometimes stylized as Hawk Nelson... Is My Friend!, is the third studio album from Christian rock band Hawk Nelson.

That's oftentimes how leads are written in these kinds of cases, so it mentions the real and more generic title, as well as the "stylized" one. That also helps with the common search term not always having to be a redirect to another title. Best, Jamie^☆S93 20:08, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok I always take the album name on the album cover to be correct. I am an admin on LyricWiki.org and that is how we decide things. It is usually definitive. Thin Lizzy

I see you moved Nightlife (Thin Lizzy album) to Night Life (Thin Lizzy album) with no discussion. Regardless of what the CD might say, the album cover very clearly says "Nightlife", so can you revert your change please, thanks. Bretonbanquet (talk) 12:40, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes the front of the cover is stylized "Nightlife" but the sides and back (and the song) all very clearly say "Night Life". I had to reduce the size, but I hope you will be able to see that from the two covers I have uploaded:

Those are reissue CDs, and the original album does state "Nightlife". The song itself is always written as "Night Life" though. A number of book sources also call it "Nightlife", including the recent Alan Byrne book. It's not really a question of "what I want to decide" - that's what it's called. To know my other edits were correct, you clearly know much about Thin Lizzy. With this in mind I have a question that I'm hoping you might be able to answer: the song "Dedication", is it a Thin Lizzy song, or Grand Slam?

It appears on the special 2 disc version of Live 1984 and of course on Dedication: The Very Best of Thin Lizzy. However on the Dedication album page it says "reconstructed after Phil Lynott's death". As such the song on Dedication can be attributed to Thin Lizzy (without Lynott) but the 1984 song...? The original song?

Yes, an interesting situation! Originally, "Dedication" was a demo written by Archer for Grand Slam, though it was only ever a very rough demo. The song was basically forgotten until about 1990 when the idea came up to do a tribute song for the fifth anniversary of Lynott's death. The demo was discovered and the vocal was kept, but the music was re-recorded by Gorham and Downey, and released as a Thin Lizzy song. Some people questioned that, and that maybe it should just have been a Phil Lynott release - I know Brian Robertson was a bit sore about it. So there wasn't really an original recording, and it wasn't a Thin Lizzy song at all until the 1991 release. As for the writing credit, it was definitely written by Archer, but it is credited everywhere to Lynott... so that's pretty much what we have to put in the articles. I am not sure, but Archer did sign away the rights to some Grand Slam songs - I don't know if "Dedication" was one of them. It makes me think the song might need an article of its own... Cheers! Certainly originally, it was "Cowgirl's Song", only ever as part of the "Rosalie / Cowgirl's Song" medley. I've never seen it written as "Cowgirl Song" so maybe it's either a mistake or some irritating revisionist thing. Haha, it's an unreleased song - it's from the Black Rose sessions, so it's Lynott, Downey, Gorham and Moore. I've seen it titled as "Rockula" and "Rock your Love" as well, but since it was never actually released, it's hard to tell. I have it somewhere but the sound quality is awful, and it's a bit of a throwaway song. There's a slightly better song, "Hate", from the same sessions, and one called "Cold Black Night". At those sessions they also did versions of Parisienne Walkways, Spanish Guitar, Ode to a Black Man, Blackmail (Wild Horses song) and different versions of some of the Black Rose tracks.
