The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Jonathan Ross image

Hi, Ray. I wanted to make sure you understood why I removed the image you added to the Jonathan Ross article. Wikipedia's policy on copyrighted (non-free) content doesn't allow copyrighted images of living people to be used as the main picture to identify them. There are a few exceptions, but since it's possible for someone to take a photo of Jonathan Ross at some public event and then release it with a free license, we can't just use the book cover to illustrate his article. The book cover could be used for an article about the book, since that would be covered by U.S. fair use law, but that's a different matter.

Incidentally, I've tagged the image on Commons for deletion, because Commons doesn't allow any copyrighted images at all. The image even has a watermark from Amazon noting that it's copyrighted, so there's no wiggle room. Sorry. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 05:24, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

George Johnstone Hope

Hello Ray, I hope you can help me. I was copyediting the George Johnstone Hope page, and I noticed that the two images of him that you uploaded, Image:George Johnstone Hope.jpg, and Image:George Johnstone Hope Rear Admiral.jpg, dont give any information on the artist, date, etc. The image pages link to the National Maritime Museum web site, but I was unable to locate them there. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
