Pearl Cleage

edit

Hi - I saw that this article was nominated for deletion but moved to the draftspace at Draft:Pearl Cleage. This article is a little confusing since it's titled after the author but looks to instead be about one of her works. If it's about the work then it will need to be titled Flyin' West. There are some issues with the draft however, which I'll go over in the below notes:

  • This is written as more of an essay or a reflection piece than an encyclopedia article. This is something that takes some getting used to, so no worries - you're not the first to do this. I did much of the same when I first started editing. Now while this isn't a film, the general layout and writing style will be the same - so this brochure on creating film articles should be a large help. I'll add an infobox for the article. If it's a biography article then you'll want to read this brochure.
  • We can only summarize what has been explicitly stated in the source material as opposed to interpreting the material or drawing conclusions on our own. Some of this comes across as your own interpretation. The following sentence could be seen as original research because it's us saying that insight can be found in these works and in her works in general. This could be seen as subjective, as someone may disagree with this, the next reader agree, and the next reader be ambivalent. With things like this, if it's pulled from the source, it's important to attribute the claim to the person making it.
Insight on both topics can be found in her works entitled "Flying West," "Mad at Miles," and many more as well.
  • As part of the prior note, it's important to avoid any point of view or subjective terms, as well as terms that seem kind of vague. Words or phrases to avoid include "generally speaking" and "important". We also need to avoid writing in a too casual tone, such as saying that someone has a ton of influences. This may not be as clear for non-native English speakers and is also imprecise - we can say that she has many inspirations, but saying "a ton" is a little too casual and imprecise in an encyclopedic setting since inspirations would theoretically not weigh anything (since they can be anything from ideas to locations or people). Many implies a number.
  • This is sort of stated in the prior ones, but I want to restate that it's important to avoid writing in a casual tone. Gabriel García Márquez is a good example of how an article should be written, so I'd review this article for an example of prose format.

Now all that said, you have some excellent sources so a lot of this will just be re-writing to fit Wikipedia's writing style and continuing to expand. Let me know if you need any help - I can absolutely help you with this. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:49, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Your draft article, Draft:Pearl Cleage

edit

Hello, PrincessPean. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Pearl Cleage".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! JMHamo (talk) 09:46, 11 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
