Good News

The Request for Salar Wikipedia has been verified as eligible.

This means that to qualify for final approval, the following two criteria needs to be meet:

1. There needs to be an active Salar Test-Wikipedia on Wikimedia Incubator.
2. These MediaWiki interface messages Interface messages must be translated into the Salar language.

Hanzi - Latinised automatic transliteration of Cantonese Wikipedia

There may be the possiblity of setting up a Hanzi - Latinised automatic transliteration of Cantonese Wikipedia on the same principle as it works in Kazakh Wikipedia. (see more info, Kazakh converter)

However we need an Cantonese native speaker to help us write the comparative table with letters and transliteration rules. Then we can create such converter.

Vowels and terminals

Finals (or rimes) are the part of the sound after the initial. A final is typically composed of a main vowel (nucleus) and a terminal (coda). There are 53 finals (including the two syllabic nasals) for all the sounds of the Cantonese dialect.

A main vowel can be long or short, depending on vowel length. This is the only indispensble part of a syllable. A terminal can be a tail vowel, a nasal consonant, or a stop consonant. Finals with no terminal are called open finals.

¹Finals [ɛːu], [ɛːm], [ɛːp] only appear in colloquial pronunciations of characters, while [ɛːt] is restricted to loans and de novo coinages. They are absent from some analyses and romanization systems.

The stop consonants (/p, t, k/) are unreleased ([p̚, t̚, k̚]).

³Only appears in allophonic variants of syllables like “点，边” when in compounds like “点解”，“边个” as the syllables that immediately follow “点” and “边” begin with the consonant [k].

⁴[ɵ] is an allophonic variant of [o], both variants of the same phoneme, which only appears as [ɵ] before a final palatal or aveolar (semi-)consonant [y], [t], or [n], but as [o] otherwise.

Based on the chart above, the following pairs of vowels are usually considered to be allophones:

[ɛː] - [e], [iː] - [ɪ], [ɔː] - [o], [uː] - [ʊ], and [œː] - [ɵ].

Although that satisfies the minimal pair requirement, some linguists find it difficult to explain why the coda affects the vowel length. They recognize the following two allophone groups instead:

[e] - [ɪ] and [o] - [ʊ] - [ɵ].

The main vowels /ɪ/, /ʊ/ and /ɵ/ are pronounced more like [e̝], [o̝] and [ɵ̞].

In that way, the phoneme set consists of seven long vowels and three short vowels that are in contrast with three of the long vowels, as presented in the following chart:

When the three checked tones are separated, the codas -p, -t and -k become allophones of the nasal codas -m, -n and -ŋ respectively, because they are in the complementary distribution in which the former three appear in the checked tones and the latter three appear in the non-checked tones. That explains the distribution of codas well.

Automatic transliteration tool for Cantonese Wikipedia now possible

Dear Penkyamp,

Do you wish see all the articles on Cantonese Wikipedia to be able to be automatically be converted to Romanised Cantonese at the click of a button? (similar to this Hakka tool)

I know how to have it implemented however I do not speak Cantonese so you and your Cantonese community group will first need to translate these 6,621 most commonly used chinese characters into the Romanised Cantonese (ie. Penkyamp). Note that I have already translated the first 927 of those characters (ie. 14% of 6,621) based on the words found on your Userpages.
