ICCH224 Week 03

edit

Please propose a topic or two that you wish to write on Wikipedia. You should read all related articles/policies on Wikipedia and provide the following information.

  1. Your proposed article(s) (New or existing STUB article relating to a chemical compound, reaction, equipment or technique - or related to your major/interest. (see Category:Stub-Class Chemistry articles))
    • For new article, explain briefly why it passes WP:NOTE.
    • For existing topics, explain briefly the state/structure of the current article.
      • Is the structure & existing content appropriate?
        • If not, restructure or remove content as per WP:MOS and WP:NOT before you move to the next stage.
  2. Brief outline of your contributions to the article
    • In what section & what content
      • Make sure it belongs to the article and it is encyclopedic. See WP:NOT for things that should NOT be added.
      • Make sure that it is not redundant to existing articles. Use Google search "site:wikipedia.org" rather than Wikipedia search.
    • References for the article
    • Media files (photo/VDO/drawing) to be used in the article.
      • You may suggest plan to create your own work and upload to Wikimedia Commons
      • You may use existing media on Wikimedia Commons. Use Google image search "site:wikimedia.org" rather than Wikimedia Commons search.
  3. Examples/template/related articles that you will use as a model to develop your nominated article.
    • In terms of WP:MOS/formatting - your article will have similar style/format/tone to these articles.
    • In terms of content - your article will link to or will be linked from these articles.

Please leave your answer below. (Leave a reply in this section of your talkpage.) --Taweetham (talk) 09:58, 29 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Task 1 - Proposed article
I would like to write a STUB article about the topic: 'Acid dye' that is currently an existing topic. Currently, the article starts off with an introduction and its contents include its uses (as a fiber and in the medical field), description, structures, classes, and references - as well as a table at the end compiling some dye-related terms linking to other articles. I believe that there might not be enough content on there, for example in the 'Classes of acid dyes' page in which no acid dye names are given as examples.
Task 2 - Outline of contributions to the article
As mentioned previously, I think more information should be added to the 'Classes of acid dye' section, so as to provide a more in-depth understanding of acidic dyes. The things to add could include:
A brief description of how they are categorized: There are three classifications of acidic dyes, which are all classified by their dyeing behaviour, including their wet fastness, migration ability, and dyeing pH.
Leveling acid dyes: These dyes have the lowest molecular weight of all three, and as a result will migrate more rapidly before fixation occurs. Leveling acid dyes have simple and small molecules, and will exhibit low wet fastness due to their high mobility. Thus, they are not normally suited for use as apparel fabric. They require an acidic dyebath to be applied, often using Sulphuric acid and Sodium sulphate mixtures (pH2-4), together with leveling agents such as ethoxylated fatty amines.
Milling acid dyes: These dyes have a higher molecule weight than Levelling dyes due to their larger molecules, meaning that they will migrate slower in comparison to Levelling dyes. Their low mobility causes them to exhibit a higher wet fastness, which is useful for dyeing wool materials. Milling acid dyes are sometimes called 'Neutral acid dyes' as they don't require an acidic dyebath, and will commonly be applied using Acetic acid (pH4-7).
Metal complex acid dyes: These dyes are composed of large acid dye molecules complexed with a metal ion, which will usually be chromium or cobalt. Metal complex acid dyes have the highest molecular weight of all the dyes, giving them low mobility and the highest wet fastness. Once fixed to the fiber, they will not migrate. Due to this, they are commonly used on nylon and synthetic poly-amide fibers. These dyes are very economical, however they will produce duller shades compared to the other classes. Metal complex acid dyes take a larger range of pH in the dyebath (pH2-7)
In the categories above, I have incorporated the original wording into the additional information I have added. I believe that the original wording had some grammatical mistakes, and so reading it would confuse the reader and prevent them from understand the article. I think that my contribution would add in relevant information whilst not changing too much of what the previous writer was trying to convey.

Task 3 - Related articles to be used as a model
I will use the article "Dye" as my model to be used in order to develop the "Acid dye" article. I could also add in related information about the 'Chromophore' section in more detail from the "Dye" article, for example the use of chromophoric dyes in Microbiology - to visualize nucleic acids and lipid bilayers. The "Dye" article also talks about attachment to fibers, which I could elaborate on in the "Acid dye" article on how it works.

Your topic is approved and added to the course page. Please develop the proposal into the first draft in your sandbox.

  • For existing article, you may copy some parts of the existing article to your sandbox to see how revision/integration of content would work. You will copy the code back to the article at later stage.
  • For new article, you may want to copy parts of a template article to your sandbox to see what sections are necessary. The sandbox will be moved to the article namespace at later stage. Please do not click "Submit your draft for review!". The function is not applicable to our course.

In all cases, do not copy more than what is necessary. For example, do not copy any categories to your sandbox. --Taweetham (talk) 08:15, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Please also note that a similar proposal (User_talk:Myesd#ICCH224_Week_03) has been rejected. However, one of the sciencedirect references there is more appropriate than your blogspot reference above. --Taweetham (talk) 08:21, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

In the sandbox I will be working on the following categories:
  • Classes of acid dyes
  • Uses
  • Description
  • References
I will also have to change some of the links. For example, the original would link pages for 'Synthetic' and 'Nylon' multiple times, or have links for 'hair' or 'protein' that I do not think are too related to the article. It looks excessive and unnecessary.

PanisaLuengthada (talk) 14:39, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Actually, ajarn, I'm not sure about the last part. If the original article had links to pages like 'hair', which is a common word that shouldnt need explaining, would it be better to delete it? Also, if the links are repeated, do I delete the repeat links after the first one or is it okay to repeat the links? PanisaLuengthada (talk) 13:09, 12 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

ICCH224 Week 05

edit

Your work has been reviewed. Majority of the content/formatting is ok. Please carefully move encyclopedic part of your sandbox to article namespace so that the general public can see it. Here are some tips to help you complete the transition to online editing.

  1. Content/Formatting policies
  2. Technicalities
    • Unlike sandbox, all edits will be public immediately and it is important to make sure that all of your edits are acceptable. You may use preview button and provide edit summary to help you.
    • Any "page save" on Wikipedia even outside article namespace is permanently recorded and can be retrieved by the public. Please think carefully before you click save and before you revert other people edits. No work is lost but only the latest version of the page is shown to the public. Deletion of pages (or versions of pages) is only possible by admins if it falls under Wikipedia:Deletion policy. You can request admins to do deletion or other prescribed tasks should the need arises.
    • You may want to set watchlist and notifications so that you can catch up with changes made to your article and your talk page by other editors.
  3. Community interactions
    • You will be interacting with other volunteers when you make edits on the article namespace. Please respect other users in the community and assume good faith.
    • If your work is reverted or modified in any other ways, do not engage in a edit war. Rather use discussion page of your article to settle issues.
    • You may be blocked from Wikipedia for failure to observe community rules.

We hope you enjoy seeing product of your hard work read by many people in the years to come. --Taweetham (talk) 15:11, 12 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Can you add citations to your work as well? --Taweetham (talk) 01:15, 20 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

For your information, the grading is based on the criteria below: Wikipedia contributions must meet the minimum quantity requirement to be graded.

Quantity
  • We generally expect at least 5,000 characters (counted by xtools's authorship attribution) to the assigned article unless you upload media file(s) and/or help contribute to classmate article(s).
  • If media are created by you, uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons and used in the article, either 1,000 or 2,000 or 3,000 characters credit will be given, regardless of the number of media uploaded.
    • 1,000 characters credit will be given to sound files(s).
    • 1,000 characters credit will be given to image(s).
    • 2,000 characters credit will be given to video(s).
  • If you help classmate(s) to edit their articles or create media files for uses in classmates' articles, up to 1,000 bytes of your contributions may be counted. Your classmate(s) must remain in the Wikipedia assignment program at the end of the term so that the articles can be counted.
  • All of the work must be created by you and recorded under your username.
  • No outstanding WP:COPVIO issues for both text and media.

The work will be graded based on quality and process criteria:

Quality

Learn from similar articles on Wikipedia (preferably higher quality than the article you are working on).

  • Structure
  • Content
    • All information are relevant to the article and written in encyclopedic tone. (Understand WP:NOT.)
    • Text are clearly supported by reliable sources. (Follow WP:REF.)
    • Do final clean up and proofreading.
  • Formatting & housekeeping
    • Formatting (citation e.g. {{cite web}}}, {{cite journal}} and {{cite book}}, heading styles, bullet/numbered point, font face, table, position/layout/caption of images etc.)
    • Other issues (course tag on talk page of your article, make sure you add categories to your article(s) and media)
    • File names in Wikimedia commons or reference name in the article should be sensible and helpful for other editors.
    • Unnecessary files, pages e.g. redirection are nominated for deletion.
    • To produce desired formatting, learn from source codes of other articles on Wikipedia or ask classmates/other Wikipedians.
Process
  • Complete the assignment on time.
  • Understand Wikipedia articles and policies by independent reading.
  • Take appropriate action on comments given by the community/instructor.
  • Provide edit summary for every edit on the article namespace.
  • If conflict arises, do not engage in edit war. Use talk page/discussion pages to resolve the issue.
  • Help improve classmates' articles.
  • Thank other editors/reviewers of your article.

Hi PanisaLuengthada! Please continue to improve your nominated article Acid dye. This is a reminder that you have not complete the assignment. Please complete it as soon as possible to remain in our program. --Taweetham (talk) 06:54, 3 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ajarn, I just made some changes to the article which is shown in my sandbox. I added 2 pictures to show the effect of 2 acid dyes (Lee's stain and PTAH stain) as well as further explaining what acid dyes are used for in the medical field and why. Could you please review this and tell me if its okay or not, so I can move it to the article? Thank you in advance. PanisaLuengthada (talk) 13:41, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi ajarn, I just changed the Gokhale reference so that the 'access url' was removed (it does not have one as it is a book) in the Acid dye page. I also added content to the article in my sandbox under the 'food industry' section, could you please have a look and approve/disapprove it so I could make further changes? Thank you in advance. PanisaLuengthada (talk) 16:19, 16 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Please WP:Be Bold and edit the article. From a quick look, I see reference errors (shown in red in reference section) and unnecessary capitalization of words. Apart from that, it should be fine. --Taweetham (talk) 02:33, 17 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

ICCH224 Week 11

edit

@Teetee taw: Your mentor will provide detailed feedback soon. I have identified a number of problems at this point:

  1. The title paragraph as it read now indicates that the subject is only applied to textile. However, the Uses Section expands this to Medicine and Food Industry Subsections. Make sure you understand the connection and revise the content to be consistent.
  2. Structures Section is not well-referenced.
  3. Classes of acid dyes Section may have a conflicting information with Description Section. Make sure you understand the connection and revise the content to be consistent.
  4. Health hazards section raises some concerns. Is this WP:NOT? (General warning for each of the acid dye compounds is usually WP:NOT.) Is it carcinogenic as a pure compound or as a textile or both? Are there any safer alternatives or mitigation measures? If you can answer these questions, you can probably revised the section to be encyclopedic.
  5. Please provide sufficient internal links so that readers can understand your text.

--Taweetham (talk) 07:37, 23 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I agree with ajarn Taweetham about the title paragraph in which it does not give the overall picture of what the acid dye is. I want to add that for the structure section, there is no connection between texts and pictures. I do not know which picture is referring to which types, you should elaborate more on that part as well--Teetee taw (talk) 13:13, 24 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi ajarn and p' teetee, I fixed: error number 1 (by adding text that its related to the food/medicine industry as well - mobile edit).
error number 3 (erased the description's section information about the three types of dyes because this was incorrect).
error number 5 (added more links for 'mutations', 'endothermic', 'pKa', 'dissolution' (solvation), 'mitochondria', 'nuclei', 'collagen' and 'cytoplasm')
However for the structures section, I dont know what to do as I didnt make that section or contribute anything to it. I went to the reference the previous editor had linked and it wouldnt give me access so I was unable to fix the references or link the different pictures to each type. Also, could you elaborate more on why the health hazards section is WP:NOT? I took a look at it and I'm a bit confused because the section isnt promotional, a dictionary, a promotion of original thought, a guideline, blog, etc. Thank you PanisaLuengthada (talk) 05:31, 30 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I followed P' Teetee's advice and removed the health hazard section, bringing the content to the description section instead. PanisaLuengthada (talk) 11:49, 6 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
