PPE or Personal Protection Equipment is described as any kind of product that protects the body from harm in a working environment.

There is debate over what is classed as PPE as there are mixed views on product areas.

Here is a list of what is considered to be PPE or Personal Protection Equipment

1. Head protection - Helmets , Hoods. Some of these headpieces integrate breathing apparatus (or respiratory devices) and integrated communications (headsets)
2. Respiratory Devices - Powered and non powered. These products can range from dust masks to gas powered filtation devices for more extreme working environments such as the Chemicals and Oil and Gas industries.
3. Hand protection - covering all aspects of gloves which include cut resistant, anti slip, anti corrosive, and household gloves. Hand sanitizers and anti bacterial gels are generallly included in this product segment.
4. Eye protection - These products are goggles and technical glasses for protection against breakage, splash and welding applications.
5. Fall Arrest - Devices which are used in scenarios where people are working at heights. in the UK , NEBOSH qualifications are required to use this apparatus and specific training is given to people using these products as it is a high risk area of work generally.
6. Workwear - This is the largest area of PPE and is split into two segments as follows:
6.1. General workwear - This type of workwear is used for DIY or manual labour scenarios , this workwear has extra pockets built into the design that allows utility tools to be stored such as Stanley Knives, tape measures and other tools. Kneedpads are usually built into the trousers for extra protection. Most of these products are cotton based and do not offer prtoection against elements such as fire , water, chemicals or high hazard risk.
6.2. Protective Workwear - is descirbed as technical fabrics for high risk environment. The types of fabrics used are Flame Retardant , Anti Static , Foul Weather Waterproof and Chemical and Nuclear Resistant.
7. Foot protection- These products also have various applications such as slip resistant, waterproof, anti puncture and antistatic.


This summary is what most people class as "Head to Toe Protection" i.e body protection.


Other health and safety areas are classed as: Safety Signage, Gas Detection Equipment and general health and safety guidelines.
