Conflict of interest policy

edit

  Welcome to Wikipedia. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Ronz (talk) 19:40, 18 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for the contributions. Also, thanks for disclosing your relationship with Bill Moyers on the article talk page as it shows your good faith. You might find it helpful to read the Wikipedia guidelines about this which can be read by clicking this link: WP:COI. The Wikipedia conflict of interest guideline does not require editors with conflicts of interest to avoid editing altogether, but it does take some special attention to avoid the pitfalls. Again, welcome to Wikipedia. Please feel free to ask us for help. SaltyBoatr get wet 19:58, 18 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Conflict of interest policy

edit

You may wish to look at past cases where editors have had conflicts. In this case an editor refers to problems another editor had with a biography about himself. In another case you can follow how an editor ran into conflict with other editors over an article about himself. Most conflicts I have come across involve people with extremely unpopular views or people who have created their own "vanity" articles, which obviously does not apply here. I think your best approach is to discuss perceived errors or bias on the talk page and you can contact Wikipedia directly about any serious violations of policy in the article. You can also learn about the procedures by working on other articles, many of which need improvement. I hope this helps. TFD (talk) 23:47, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
