WPCD Torrent edit

The new deal is working for me - I am seeding. - Paleorthid 01:48, 11 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

WPCD edit

Thanks for the email to SOS Children enquiries. We've no problem with linking to a torrent page but is there somewhere a bit easier to send people to (which actually explains what they need to do rather than just goes "hurray its working"?) I'll try to remember to let you know when the CD updates --BozMo talk 15:11, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'll see what i can do with explaining.

Bit torrent download link edit

Hi, the page for the bit torrent project mentioned that you want the torrent uploaded to other sites. I have a server and some spare bandwidth and will happily put it up there. Can you give me the link or file that you need me to post? 48v 21:08, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Torrent project impact assessment edit

Metrics on our project performance are pretty hard to come up with, but I have taken a run at it. Does your BitTorrent client (I believe it is Azureus?) keep track of file-specific accumulated upload. If it does, please tell it here. Also, I could not figure out if eMule tracks a similar figure - I think it does on a per session basis, but not over the life of the file's availability for upload - Do you know? I suspect I am underestimating how much I sent out over eMule. -- Paleorthid 15:53, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP Picture dump edit

Nominaladversary, I emailed you requesting the directory layout (necessary for me to put the script together) - did you get that ? A shell login to the machine would be perfect - maybe I can get that from SJ though. Wizzy 08:25, 20 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikibreak edit

I see you are calling a wikibreak time out. Do what you got to do until its done. We miss you already. I'll try not to muck things up too bad while you are out. -- Paleorthid 18:04, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Welcome back! (I'm wikibraking next) -- Paleorthid 05:43, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Torrent seeds: participant's list edit

Hi Nom - you might want to let those on the participant's list know that they can help out now by seeding the compressed/uncompressed torrents. Good work on getting together Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Torrent_Project/Version_0.5, thats some good stuff. JoeSmack Talk 02:33, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

sure, a reminder will help people out just in case they haven't been aware of any updates, and thanks, although I did base it off of Paleorthid's other organized pages. Nominaladversary 03:28, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

2007 Wikipedia Selection edit

We are ready to go. Can you get this set up on torrent? It is a 3.2 GB zip file and browsable at http://schools-wikipedia.org --BozMo talk 09:41, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll help seed as soon as it's good to go, just drop me a talkpage note. JoeSmack Talk 12:12, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, will do. Just picking up a couple of changes suggested at Wikitech-I --BozMo talk 19:15, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Anywhere we can start downloading yet? The press release will be soon... JoeSmack Talk 20:17, 27 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I didn't see a link yet, point it out to me if its been posted. Thanks. Nominaladversary 02:36, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Gone.
Downloading, Nominal, you can remove when you've gotten it started too. Let me know the torrent link and i'll seed. JoeSmack Talk 07:47, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also let me know where to link to, to send people who want it. Is there an easy explanation of how torrent works which I could put up too? Thanks again --BozMo talk 16:19, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm downloading the file now...then after I make the torrent, I submit the file hash --info included in the torrent-- to the tracker. The tracker recognizes the torrent, and everything runs smoothly. We're gonna need a serious amount of people for 2.47 gigs to be a worthy download alternative. We should spread word to the village pump, and torrent project members to download the file (from the main server) and the torrent separately, and then seed using both files<-- that will go faster than 2 people seeding and 50 people trying to download the file using the torrent. We'll need at least 15, 24/7, people to seed. Of course the availability will then grow from its popularity.
For torrents, one can say that they allow the person who wants to download the Encyclopedia from other people who already have the file and who are downloading at the same time. This takes a massive amount of load off the server, and spreads it out to the people. It is NOT illegal, but people do need to download a BitTorrent client such as uTorrent or Azureus in order to utilize the torrent. Nominaladversary 20:22, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ok I'll leave you to ask around. The only good news is that last time the number of downloads rose slowly over about 3 months, rather than was a sudden peak. --BozMo talk 20:42, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
The file is still downloading...but I should have the torrent setup by 4 EST on Wednesday -- in the states. Dunnoh where you guys are, but its time to sleep here. Nominaladversary 02:28, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am in England and had already been asleep for a while. Where will the torrent be again? --BozMo talk 08:34, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Its up and running! The main focus is now to build a solid seeder...base...so people can download. I'm going to make a subpage for the 2007 Wikipedia Selection rather soon based off of the ones we already have. I'm just wondering what we should put as a description for each dumpsite. You guys can download the torrent Here. ED2K support -- all in good time. Nominaladversary 20:09, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've been seeding, thanks for the link. You should ask everyone on the participant's list to seed too, thats what they signed up to help with! :) JoeSmack Talk 18:32, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have had a few complaints that the zip file is hard to unzip (too slow). Can I give you a tar file to replace it? --BozMo talk 10:51, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
How much faster does tar unzip? And one of my friends' friends also downloaded the zip, but some of the files are corrupted. Perhaps the issue causes the file to unzip too slowly. I use winrar. I'll check if anything is corrupted in my file. Also, do you want to scrap the zip file completely and just do 1 tar file, or do both? Nominaladversary 18:54, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I just tried unzipping the file...there are 866 corrupt files. I think we should stop seeding very soon. Here is the list with directories. Nominaladversary 19:06, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Here is the new 2007 Schools Wikipedia Selection full file in gzipped tar format (2619231647 bytes, MD5 89d80af4bc6c09ba1ac0de2553944eee ). DuncanHarris 13:39, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I suggest we get everything switched to this one which we have tested right through (downloaded, unzipped, burned, opened, run) and definitely works fine. I do apologise for not testing the other one properly first. --BozMo talk 14:46, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have removed the full tar gzip file from our web server because someone has posted links to it elsewhere and lots of downloads were eating our bandwidth yesterday (an extra 50GB/day!) It is still available via the torrent and I am still seeding the torrent from our server. DuncanHarris 18:57, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have unzipped it twice now with 866 corrupt files. Everything else is still accessible from my firefox browser. It takes about 10 minutes with 7-zip (freeware, fantastic). Downloading new one now, seeding in about 5 hours. People are still downloading the .zip, should I stop seeding it still? And the zip takes a long time because of the number of files, not the file size. I suggest later today putting the torrent link on the Community Bulletin board too. JoeSmack Talk 15:49, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I had the zip version removed from the tracker, people should stop downloading that. I'm going to start downloading the tar.gz version. I guess we can expect a torrent in a day or two, tracker hassle and what not. And for decompressing there are many variables that affect the rate and final run time of the process: ram, processor, HD fragmentation , program used, etc... Nominaladversary 18:54, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Expanded .gz and the tarball, no corrupt files. Can seed whenever, just need the link. JoeSmack Talk 22:16, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I guess we could seed this too from our server but we'll have to work out how. Sorry again for the hassle. --BozMo talk 05:32, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
The torrent will probably be up tomorrow, thats a Friday. I have no idea how seeding from a server works...thats why I had my friend set up the tracker and what not. That's alright with the file. There wasn't a large amount of seeders and leechers, no damage done. A problem on the same scale is bound to happen again. Nominaladversary 19:46, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can we get a URL for the .torrent file yet? DuncanHarris 09:02, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for all the delays, Here it is. Nominaladversary 19:44, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Great! I'm seeding! Should we put this link anywhere for the community other than the torrent page for the school selection? JoeSmack Talk 22:27, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but no one will want to leech the file unless there are enough seeders. Once we hit 5 we should tell the community about it, and then if it grows will slashdot-it and what not. Nominaladversary 23:20, 11 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
We hit five! Can we now? :) JoeSmack Talk 05:08, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am seeding from our Linux server and a home machine now. DuncanHarris 13:04, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
We should announce the torrent release to the community rather soon now, hopefully we'll get at least 10 more people who are willing to see 24/7. Thanks for that update DuncanHarris Nominaladversary 16:21, 15 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Torrent edit

  1. Thanks for reminding me.Flubeca (t) 23:17, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  2. Do you have a working link of the new file? --Mattwj2002 21:52, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, i want to get a seed'n! :) JoeSmack Talk 15:26, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Really sorry, school has been hell though -- loading on finals and tests and projects, etc. My friend who runs the tracker has the same issue with school, but I will try to post sometime today ASAP. If not today, definitely on Monday. Nominaladversary 19:26, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Any way of telling edit

How many downloads so far on the torrent? --BozMo talk 14:32, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think that this has the number -- it shows 123 right now...But it doesn't seem right. I'll look into the tracker and see if i can find it. Nominaladversary 14:53, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
We have had 647 downloads of the .torrent file that is used to start you off on the bittorrent download for the full file so I guess its not right--BozMo talk 15:43, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I think none of the trackers seems to be working, does this support download managers.Kindly help - [Shivaprasad_78][3]
