Why the wait on Shade's Children? edit

I'm curious as to what exactly you're waiting for with the article you're constructing on Shade's Children. It looks like you have some great material (I'm familiar with the book) that would certainly be much better than the stub that exists now. Why not simply work on the actual article? That way people going to Shade's Children will have access to the information you've amassed, and they can more readily contribute their own info. Remember, there should be no sole author of a wikipedia article – the whole point is collaboration! I don't mean to be critical — and I certainly appreciate the work you've done — but it just seems like you can work just as well on the real article, with greater benefit to Wikipedia overall. If it's a matter of time and you're too busy, just let me know and I'd be happy to transfer the material for you. wikinick 09:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

While I agree with what you've said, I feel a need to finish the summary and put at least minor details into the sections on the Overlords and creatures of the book; I would rather have a finished article at the page at all times, even if that article is a stub, rather than having an incomplete article. If you really feel that the incomplete article is superior enough to the stub to warrant inclusion, feel free to put it in. Please be aware, as well, that my school's IP, 207.236.151.102, is banned from editing Wikipedia. I can still post on my own userspace while at school, but I won't be able to make any other change for the next 5.5 hours or so. Do as you will, I'll keep improving the article either way. :) Nihiltres 15:31, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have had a look at your article and it is coming on fine. I have restructured it a bit to meet Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/ArticleTemplate standard layout. Also you could use that pattern to suggest new sections and things to add. Also added an infobox. trust that is ok. Also I would promote it to the main page now and work on it there. It has pleanty of extra information worth making available. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page) 08:40, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
With a bunch of sect-stub templates added (and a modified, subst'd one for the incomplete summary) it might be borderline postable. Let me know what you think; I'll be doing plenty of editing to try to get my little project into the main space by Friday; then I won't be limited during the day to only posting on my talk page. Nihiltres 15:38, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I was wondering when you were planning on posting your updated article, I keep looking at the existing page and it makes me wince. literally. -- Gizzakk 03:34, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
If someone finishes the plot summary, I'll post it. My main problem currently is time: I'm a student, and school is currently eating too much of my time to be able to post on Wikipedia, as much as I want to get this done. Since I want the article to be at very least only sect-stubbed (whereas the current plot summary stops part-way through), that's what needs to be done. If you have the time, please, please finish the plot summary, which lacks the portion of the novel from the meeting at the cache after the Sub is conquered, to the destruction of the Thinker controlling the Grand Projector. Thanks for taking an interest in this project! Nihiltres 21:35, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is a general test to see whether formatting works; am using a proxy to attempt to bypass the block on my school\\\'s IP, 207.236.151.102 .

If only - unblocking my school's IP would create more vandalism than my school-time contributions are worth. Nihiltres 14:53, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I admit I'm not familiar with Wikipedia's blocking techniques, but shouldn't it be possible to block anonymous users with your school's IP and not registered ones (such as yourself)? I suppose that wouldn't work if the vandals were also registered, but in that case, couldn't your username be selectively permitted while denying other access from that IP? It seems a shame to stifle a perfectly legitimate contributor over matters outside his or her control. wikinick 09:11, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'll look into it -that would be an ideal solution. Any registered users causing trouble could be quickly banned, and the IP users would not be able to make any edits. Nihiltres 13:47, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Blocking_policy_proposal - I am a textbook case for this. It isn't clear if it's been implemented at all though. Nihiltres 14:03, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

monicasdude edit

Thank you for attempting to mediate my dispute with Monicasdude. Unfortunately, it's proceeded to a request for arbitration, which it appears will be accepted. You may wish to weigh in, the request can be found here SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 03:03, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I'll get to it as soon as possible - the main problem being that my school's IP, 207.236.151.102, is a blocked IP on Wikipedia due to vandalism by my fellow students, as you seem to have observed above. I can still post on my talk and user pages, but I can't edit Wikipedia until later today, around 4:00 PM EDT (I'll find a UTC value in a minute). Nihiltres 14:58, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question regarding book series edit

Hi! I'm not sure if you remember me, but I did a few edits and whatnot to some Old Kingdom articles, which you commented on/corrected. Thanks for those! :) I was wondering about the best way to go about something I wanted to do, and I felt that maybe I should ask you first since you've been working on the Old Kingdom books as well. I hope you don't mind. I'd ask at the Novels Wikiproject, but I wouldn't know where and feel sort of... er, shy. :">
Anyway! I was hoping to do something to another YA fantasy series (maybe two) similar to what you guys are planning/doing to the Old Kingdom series. Now, one of them (which I'm more interested in working on right now, as the articles for it are less fleshed out), makes me wonder how I'm to go about it. I've come up with a few ideas, but would like to run them by you and ask your opinions.
The series in question is Tamora Pierce's Tortallan series (series, as in plural). Just in case you haven't read any of them, the first series set in Tortall is Song of The Lioness, a series of four books. The next is The Immortals, another set of four books. And so on. There are four series set in Tortall, the last one having two books. You can probably read a bit about them (and see how the articles should be fixed!) on Tamora Pierce's Wiki page.
Now, basically what I thought was that each book should have a Wiki page. I also felt that maybe each series should also have a page, but... should it? Or should series info be kept at the author page? Also, in terms of characters -- I've read discussions on that characters of books should just be kept in a list page, which I see you're also trying to do to the Old Kingdom series. However, for this scenario, some very major characters not only span different books but different SERIES of books. *facefaults* I thought, maybe the way to go about it would have an article/list for major Tortallan characters (spanning different series -- this page could get long, longer than the page limit, and if so, I'll break it down to individual character articles), minor Tortallan characters (spanning different series), and then the same for each series. Book characters can be kept on-page.
Thoughts? :D I would very much appreciate any ideas/comments on this. :) Thanks in advance!
-- Angela 05:09, 25 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

While I haven't read those books (yet, I borrowed them from Abhorsen327, she's read them) I've heard of them, and can imagine how to deal with the problem that it poses. The Old Kingdom characters will be lumped into a main article mainly because there's a problem with having individual articles for each character - you end up with many short articles that cannot be expanded because of the limited amount of information on the subject. I'm guessing that a character that spans more than one series will be documented well enough to merit a page of his or her own. This still allows for an entry on the merged page, if you have one - insert a "main article" link before a summary. You should also try to keep multiple "streams" of characters separate (but linking them is ok): one page will confuse users as to which series each character belongs to, or especially during which series characters developed most. Recurrent minor characters are the ones that are the trickiest - if there aren't many of them, then they may have to be diverted somewhere other than an article such as Minor characters from the Tortallan series or Recurrent minor Tamora Pierce characters. Phew, hope that my very wordy suggestions help in some way; good luck. I'll be on sporadically this week, but probably more after that :) . Nihiltres 13:50, 27 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Interesting thoughts. I haven't read more than two series of her Tortallan books, as her YA fantasy work is STUPIDLY DIFFICULT to come by where I live, so basing my knowledge from what I already know (which should be the case, of course), notable multiple-series characters are just a handful (there are a larger number of recurrent minor characters). I've already started work on my sandbox for the multi-series/series-wide characters I can work on (spoilers there though!), and am having a bit of difficulty trying to decide if someone is "worthy" enough to be placed on the multi-series one (i.e., one character is prominent in Book 1 of one series, shows up briefly in Book 4 of the same series, and then a "middle" (neither minor nor major) character in Book 3 of ANOTHER series, shows up briefly again in Book 4 of that other series...boo!). Obviously, it would be MUCH MORE helpful if the really notable ones have their own article page; but there was this talk on the current Alanna of Trebond page that it should be merged with The Song of the Lioness. (I disagree; better-written articles should "fix" their too-parallel content.) Hmm, I'm starting to write everything that I'm thinking about, sorry for seeming to ramble. :P
I will think some more, but is leaning toward separate articles for major multi-series characters. :) Yes, your suggestions are wonderful -- wordy is good XD
One last plea for opinion -- in User:Angelamaria/Sandbox/The_Song_of_the_Lioness_characters (I've written NOTHING there yet, so it's spoiler-safe, hehe), I still included a Alanna, for example, but with just a link to her article. Shoud this have some sort of intro text, or is the link fine enough as it is? I'm hesitant leaving these multi-series characters out of this since it would be confusing for readers ("where is the title character?!") :)
Thanks again :D Oh, PS, I've just joined the actual Novels WikiProject. Might as well XD

Why the wait on Shade's Children? Again edit

Although your desire to been seen to produce finished article may be laudable, I can see no good reason to hold on to this article. It is already "far" better that what it is due to replace. As it is 'normal' editors are adding the odd change to the existing article when if inplace they could be finding this replacement and turning and improving it. Please, please authorize publishing this. If not please explain your thinking. Lack of time does not constitue reason. It good enough as is! It's new life can continue from here. Also don't think as wikipedia as write once paper, it just isn't like that. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 16:04, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Main Themes in Shade's Children edit

Hello, I was wondering what you were looking for when making the 'Main Themes' section of your Shade's Children page. If I knew what should be put there, I'd be happy to start it off. However, I live in the UK where the book isn't released until August the 7th (I read a preview copy last year but I don't own it), so if it's too complicated I won't be able to do anything until then. Thanks for your help, and its a great article by the way. U-Mos 20:22, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Weird that the book hasn't been released in the UK yet (it's been 9 years, it was published in 1997!)… but the Main Themes section is something I was unsure about, and was added, I believe, by Kevinalewis, who does a lot of work for WikiProject Novels (of which the Main Themes section is part of a standard novel article). In case you're not familiar with it (no offense if you are), it's there to touch on the main themes of the book - for example, Animal Farm has many politically charged themes which are totally absent from the plot of the novel. For Shade's Children, I would say that many of the themes revolve around Shade's humanity/lack thereof, and his doubt and quest for humanity. Then, although I haven't thought much directly about it, I'm sure there are more themes regarding the members of the team and their interactions, especially Gold-Eye. I'm planning on finding time soon to reread the book and finish off the plot summary and character sections, but I have no idea where to start with the themes section, so it'd be helpful if you started it, but don't feel pressured, especially since you don't have the book yet - if you don't want to do it, I'll get around to it with the other sections I'm going to fill in. Nihiltres 23:55, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Being a year on from when I read the book, anything I wrote in the section would be pure rubbish. I'm going to get the book upon its UK release, so if no one else has by then I will probably start the themes section and put in info on the missing creatures and suchlike around mid-August or early September. Oh, and we brits waited much longer for The Ragwitch - originally released in 1990, we only got it last August! U-Mos 13:18, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've nearly finished the book, so I gave the Main Themes section a stab. If it's complete rubbish, feel free to delete it. U-Mos 18:24, 8 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Disambiugation page Dineshkannambadi 01:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC) edit

Hi.I need to create a WIKI page for Indian Poet Ranna. You have a redirect page already assigned for this page. Do you need this redirect and if you dont, I can remove the redirect and put in my content there. If you do, how do I create a disambiguation page for Ranna?

Thanks,

Dinesh Kannambadi (New York)

No need for a disambiguation page, the page I redirected to is minor enough that you only need a topline disambiguation link in the following format: {{Otheruses4|the Indian poet|the fictional bell|Necromantic bells#Ranna}} . If you put that at the top of your page, this is what will display a little under the title:

Thanks for letting me know, though. :) Nihiltres 02:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
