February 2017 edit

Hello, I'm Binksternet. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on Norman Petty, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source, so I removed it. Wikipedia has a very strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate and clear. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you! Binksternet (talk) 08:24, 4 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Michael, I’m relatively new to Wikipedia and may be a little naive regarding the subtleties of posting/editing. Wikipedia:About states: “Wikipedia is written collaboratively by largely anonymous volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles, except in limited cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism. Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or, if they choose to, with their real identity.” BTW I have contributed financially to Wiki a couple of times when the banners have popped up. $100 each time, but I felt it was warranted. Basically, thank God for Wikipedia. Now I have just received your two notices stating that you have removed two items I have added to Wikipedia.

Just a couple of questions so I can understand and not make the same mistakes again. “...Content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on Norman Petty...” and “Strict policy concerning how we write about living people.” Norman Petty died 34 years ago. “ ....you didn’t support your changes with a citation to a reliable source, .....” What prompted my original edit on the Norman Petty page was a statement which was extremely tenuous and without a citation: “This had been a common practice for decades, especially among managers and label owners (Irving Mills and Morris Levy being perhaps the best-known examples). Petty briefly did this in the late 1950s, as he had been told it was the norm in publishing, but he discontinued this practice within a few years.” If this incorrect statement wasn’t on the Norman Petty page to begin with there would have been no need for me to add anything. So Michael, if you would please explain how Norman Petty being dead for 34 years can be construed as “recently deceased”, and follow up the citation which should accompany the last two sentences on the Norman Petty page, it would aid my understanding of Wikipedia’s rules and regulations. Regards Anthony Shanahan

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Buddy Holly. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include, but are not limited to, links to personal websites, links to websites with which you are affiliated (whether as a link in article text, or a citation in an article), and links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the page, please discuss it on the associated talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. Binksternet (talk) 08:27, 4 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello again Michael,

“Wikipedia is not a collection of links”. Yes, on my very first visit to Wikipedia, about 15 years ago, I understood immediately that it was not a collection of links.

“Inappropriate links” would suggest that Wiki allows ‘appropriate’ links.

“Wikipedia shouldn’t be used for advertising or promotion.” I understand this and I don’t use Wikipedia for these purposes.

You also state inappropriate links include: Links to personal websites Links to websites with which you are affiliated Links that attract visitors to a website or promote a product Also, that Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value. You stated that the link I added to Wikipedia was inappropriate. Would you please explain how you found this ‘inappropriate’? Did you visit the site? The link I added to the Buddy Holly page was to my own Buddy Holly web page. Purely a reference for people wanting to know, quickly and easily, information on Buddy Holly’s releases and recordings with relevant images to make it interesting. Something I couldn’t find anywhere on the net, which prompted me creating the page. Nothing else. No links to other sites, no advertising, no mention of my name, none of my personal opinions on Buddy Holly or what my favourites Buddy Holly songs are. Just information. No need to have a search engine recognise it. I used numerous records, cds and books in my personal collection as references as well as researching exhaustingly on the net. Michael, I’m a music buff and have found many of my favourite artists have had confusing conflicting and complicated info on the net. I have spent thousands of hours over the years researching information on recordings, release dates, track information, finding images of albums and labels. All of this time was spent for my own personal satisfaction. In a few instances, as with Buddy Holly, I thought “someone else may benefit from this research so I’ll create a page”. I’m a Beatles fan, Clapton fan and Dylan fan. There ae stacks of sites and info on these well known artists out there. No need for me to add to that. But with other artists, there’s bugger all coherent info. Miles Davis is a case in point. Hundreds of sites, but most with conflicting information regarding discographies. Most have his sessionography but no one has an accurate and detailed discography. So I created one. Also with John Coltrane, Al Hibbler, Donovan, The Graham Bond Organization, The Dynamic Hepnotics and Cream. All these sites I had links added to the artists in Wikipedia. What better way for someone who is interested in one of them, benefitting from all the research I’ve done. It ain’t no money making venture for me I can assure you. So Michael, you may need to remove some more links from Wikipedia if you think these are inappropriate, or you may show me how they can stay permanently on Wikipedia. http://mossiehigh.com/Al_Hibbler has been removed http://mossiehigh.com/Cream still there http://mossiehigh.com/Donovan still there http://mossiehigh.com/Miles has been removed http://mossiehigh.com/Coltrane still there http://mossiehigh.com/GBO still there http://mossiehigh.com/Dynamics has been removed Now Michael, an example, with my above link to The Dynamic Hepnotics, (which has since been removed from Wiki) please compare the discographical information on the Wiki page with the link at the bottom on their page sending you to a discography at MusicBrainz. And then look at my page. And one last thing, did you have anything to do with creating the Norman Petty Wiki page or adding any info to it? Cheers Tony

@Binksternet: I left responses to both your messages but may not have used the correct protocol. I have since contacted Wiki and two admin type people have helped with some of the basics. Please let me know if this lands and I'll put forth my questions regarding your action. Mowdamowda (talk) 06:30, 16 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
