Hi, I saw your article Mountain Pleasure Horse (and did a little minor editing on it; added an infobox and categories to make it more like the rest of the breed articles). If you'd like to work on more horse-related articles, please consider yourself invited to join WikiProject Equine. If you need help you can ask me on my talk page (click on the word 'Neigh' after my name). 🐎 White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 21:12, 9 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

User name

edit

You may want to consider changing your user name, as per WP:COI you appear to have a close relationship with the topic you are writing about; you also can't have a "corporate" name (i.e. a company can't have an account, all have to be individual). Thought I'd better drop by and let you know about this wikipedia policy/guideline, they are quite strict about not using wikipedia for commercial purposes. Let me know if you need any help or have other questions. Montanabw(talk) 08:53, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Montanabw, I simply chose a username I would remember and there are no commercial gains to be had by writing a research article about a horse breed. I will change the username.MountainPleasure (talk) 11:54, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

To keep using the same account, you can go to WP:Changing username and simply request a change. An admin will do it for you and you will keep the same talk page and contribs history. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 16:50, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've gone through the process and am advised to keep my current username. Thank you.MountainPleasure (talk) 17:05, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
That's good. Really the only usernames that are problematic are the ones that are obviously a group of people (like "Pokeville Library Group") or are profane. Yours is neither. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 18:54, 11 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you.
My main concern is that your username is the same as the article where you are editing; that may draw unwanted attention and create drama that you don't need as a new user. I just tried to settle down a big blowup over at Gypsy horse over the lead editor there being too closely connected to the breed; I'd been watching the article all along and was keeping an eye out for it to be scholarly and neutral, and I thought it was fine, but another editor got real unhappy about it, and now the original editor has quit wikipedia altogether with really bad feelings. It's less of an issue with the big breeds because even though aficionados work on those articles too (I own Arabians, for example) there's lots of third-party content out there to use. But for the small breeds, where some of the only sources come from the breed registries and a few breed encyclopedias, it's a worry. I like to see good editors stay around. I hate to see you run into trouble from the policy cops.  ;-) But, I've said my piece and so it's up to you. Either way, happy editing! Montanabw(talk) 03:47, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

edit

If you upload any pictures to Commons (I think I had it as the wrong web address on my talk page), you can create a category titled Category:Mountain Pleasure Horse for them. To see the kinds of pictures we like you can check out Thoroughbred, which is a featured article. We like to have a full-body photo for the infobox at the top, preferably a "naked" (only wearing halter or bridle) horse, although a saddled one is fine if that's all there is. It's good to have an action photo of the horse being ridden further down in the body of the article (you can see Tennessee Walking Horse for examples). It doesn't matter that much though, if you only have one picture that's totally fine. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:01, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for this information. It will be difficult to come up with portrait photos like the ones on the Appaloosa page, however I can definitely find ones similar to the TWH photos. MPH tend to be family horses, ridden on trails and rarely at horse shows so that's what the available photos reflect. I will be working on this for a few days. Again, thanks.MountainPleasure (talk) 00:26, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
That's fine. Appaloosa is a featured article so the pictures there tend to be better. Rocky Mountain Horse and Spotted Saddle Horse are more examples of articles with fairly good but not spectacular photos. A trail riding picture is fine if that's all you have, or a horse standing out in a pasture is OK too if it's on level ground. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 01:00, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
In a perfect world, we have a left-facing animal without tack that is a good representative of the breed. Sometimes we have iffy photos, Lusitano, for example -- no real good photos of that breed (the ones that have good photographic quality aren't good of the horses and the ones OK for the horse are of weak photographic quality... sigh). I'm just whining, though. Montanabw(talk) 03:41, 14 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
By the way, WAF, you posted the mobile-only link. for people with computers, http://www.commons.wikimedia.org will still get you there, but it redirects to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page FYI. Montanabw(talk) 23:06, 15 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oops. I forget sometimes that they are different; on my phone I can switch from desktop to mobile view as needed. I prefer mobile for writing content or zeroing in on typos, but I have to go to desktop to move pages or get the WikiLove tab. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:37, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I am in the process of using the upload wizard to upload 6 photos of MPH. I listed Mountain Pleasure Horse as the category for each photo. It tells me one of the categories lacks a description page. I think this means the category doesn't currently exist. I don't know how to create a category and the Wikipedia help menus are useless as always. Also, can somebody tell me what is required or recommended for describing a photo. (I read the descriptions on several commons photos and it was unimportant trivia, such as, "I took this photo while on vacation.") I have not personally taken every one of these photos, however I have been given permission to upload the ones not originally captured by myself to Wikipedia for public educational use. There is no way to state that so should I just state that they are my own photos? Thank you.MountainPleasure (talk) 20:05, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Post a link to the URL of one of the images and I'll see if I can do the needed cleanup. Basically, there's no problem with your own images, but you have to use the WP:OTRS system to keep other people's images on wikipedia (otherwise people can just claim they had permission, without proof.) An example was this image which we used as the lead for Appaloosa. Don't lie about it, because if you are caught, you are toast. Basically, you upload and then have someone at OTRS help you send an email to the copyright holder and they email wikipedia confirming that they are giving permission. The problem is that WP wants free-licensed images, so if someone wants to retain an image for profit, they will be out of luck using it on wikipedia (where people can get it for free). The owner DOES retain their right to say it's their image ("copyleft") but they have to make it free to use. (If you've ever wondered why so many photos on WP suck, now you know... it's the free use thing.) Montanabw(talk) 21:14, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

These photos are not stored online. I have them saved on my computer. I've got them uploaded into the Wikipedia upload wizard, just haven't been able to figure out how to complete the forms, particularly the category part. I did see the WP:OTRS form (in the help pages) but wasn't totally sure how to use it, whether to email a copy to each of the 2 people who have given me photos. It will not be a problem to get permission - I have already obtained oral permission and told them they may need to file a formal permission of some sort. I wouldn't lie about it, I just wasn't sure if having the photos given to me was equal to my owning them from the beginning. I have 6 photos, 3 of my own, 3 given by others. OK...so I will go back to the upload wizard and change the copyright info and maybe that will lead me to what I need to do next as far as permissions go. But it seems that I need to create a gallery or category or both before the upload can complete. ?? MountainPleasure (talk) 21:26, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
BTW, thank you for the information, MontanaBW. I'm glad to hear that OTRS takes care of the permissions. I wish you a Happy New Year.
This may not be correct, but here's how I think you create a category on Commons. When I search for "Category: Mountain Pleasure Horse" it doesn't appear, but the words "Create this category on Commons!" Appear with a redlink. If you click on that, put the files you own into it and save, I think it should create the category for the pictures. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 22:35, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, WAF. I had hoped to complete this today but I guess the project will extend into 2016. Thank you and Happy New Year.
Happy new year to you too! 🎆🎇🎉🎊 I was going to see if I could create the category, but my phone kept losing Internet connection so I can't. The wind is blowing like crazy here, so that may have something to do with it. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 00:02, 1 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I succeeded in getting 6 images uploaded, but apparently failed to create the category for Mountain Pleasure Horse. I'm apparently not finding the correct place for creation of a category. I do feel it's important to get these images into a category. Also, I've changed the feature photo and would like to add 4 or 5 others at the bottom of the article. (I don't want to attempt inserting the images into the text.) I don't want to be a pest, but I have to say, this is a huge learning curve for somebody not experienced in Wikipedia editing. Thank you to anyone who can assist and I do appreciate all the assistance I have received so far.MountainPleasure (talk) 20:25, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I'll see if I can put them in the appropriate places in the article. I'm about to go out, so it may take a while, but I should be able to get it done sometime today. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 21:19, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
That would be much appreciated! I attempted to create a gallery using the gallery tag. It didn't work (no images showed up), but I left it there because at least it's a list of the images / captions that I would like to place in the article. Thanks again.MountainPleasure (talk) 21:24, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think I have them fixed and all appearing. We don't like galleries in articles, so I spread them out. It may need some playing with and some of them need captions, but I have to go feed animals before it gets dark. White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 21:33, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
That is PERFECT! Thank you so very much! Do you like the images I selected?MountainPleasure (talk) 21:44, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. They are good pictures, much better than we have for a lot of the articles. (Like Racking Horse where there are none at all! And what makes it worse is that I went to one of their shows years ago and didn't take one picture.) White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 23:06, 2 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I made a category for them at commons. I'd be fast to get OTRS on that on lovely palomino stallions' image and the one of the horse under saddle; they are apt to get tossed if you don't to the OTRS tag soon. The two older photos may not be able to be kept, as copyright usually belongs to the photographer and they look like old show photos (this sucks, particularly when it's your own horse... but it's reality). I trimmed a few images from the article because there were too many for its length. Good work! Montanabw(talk) 03:26, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Montanabw, for creating the category. Step by step instructions are not easy to find on Wikipedia. As for contacting OTRS, I found some sample emails for requesting release of an image under various licenses. I selected the one for this release: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International. If I understand correctly, this email is to be sent from the owner of the image to: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. I've already sent this to the owner of the Palomino photos, who also is the owner of the old stallion photo that was removed. (I do think it's unreasonable that an archive photo of a foundation stallion would be found unacceptable.) I have not sent the request to the owner of the horse under saddle because I need to confirm the email address. I have that email address now but maybe you can tell me if I'm doing this correctly. I assure you I have permission to use the photos I uploaded and it's just a matter of formalizing the permission. I would appreciate it if editors would not jump in and remove the other photos while I complete the process. Again, thank you for your assistance.MountainPleasure (talk) 11:39, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I swapped the pics and put Goldfinger back in. The email should take care of the permissions. I've watchlisted the article and if I see somebody making unconstructive edits, I'll revert them. Thanks for uploading the pictures! 📷 White Arabian Filly (Neigh) 15:08, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
OTRS should get the emails from the owners of those images within 24 hours. Thanks again for assisting with this.
I agree that instructions on WP are, yes, less than readable. The copyright cops at Commons are pretty obnoxious if something gets their attention; usually OTRS sttles it, though. If they try to toss the old foundation photo, if the horse is deceased (so no free image could be created), we can re-upload that one to WP itself and use it as a "fair use" image the way I did for the image at Midnight Sun (horse).
