VAGA edit

Are you a sanctioned representative of VAGA? Why are you tagging those images? Modernist (talk) 03:02, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

VAGA is a copyright collective and licensing agent that represents copyrights for about 6000 artists worldwide. It seems that people are routinely reproducing works by our artists without our prior authorization. This is why we are placing the notices on these works. For more information on VAGA and to contact us go to VAGA.orgMocus22 (talk) 03:24, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am aware of VAGA, and I am in sympathy with the idea of both the VAGA organization and the artists images connected to VAGA being seen in the encyclopedia that is worldwide and visible to many people. The idea gets further complicated by the Wikipedia guidelines and policies regarding External links from outside organizations being added to articles: start by reading here - WP:EL.... It is a wikipedia protocol that copyright info should be on the image page, as thumbnails in articles are derived from that. To get to the image page, click on the thumbnail.

Prior authorisation is not required, when an image is used according to section 107 of the United States Copyright Act of 1976 :

The fair use of a copyrighted work...for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.[1]

In this case, the image page should display a separate fair use rationale for each use of the image.

The addition of an external link to VAGA on an article page is not appropriate, but an external link on the image page would be, provided that VAGA is the copyright holder of the image, or the designated agent for the copyright holder.

If you wish to register as the authorised agent for VAGA, you can contact the Wikimedia Foundation to do so.

Link canvassing edit

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:38, 10 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia.
