Table

How do I make a table with 301-302 rows and 8 columns? GaneshBhakt (talk) 13:14, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

{| class="wikitable" border="1"
|+ caption
! heading !! heading
|-
| cell || cell
|-
| cell || cell
|}

Copy paste that, and modify according to the number of rows-columns you want. Also, on a side note, you may want to go to preferences, and add some gadgets. Some of them are really helpful. Yes Michael?Talk 14:32, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! Also have a look at this.
Some Questions:
How do I modify the width?
Will you please merge the cells as shown in the table?
How do I center all the cell (word) written?
As this may be the future results table in the article, please correct any mistakes in the Headings.
GaneshBhakt (talk) 15:07, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I don't know how to increase the width manually, but it usually increases depending upon the text that you actually put into it.
To change the contents of the cell, replace cell by the text you want.
I'm really sorry; I'm not really good at syntax and stuff (as I say on my userpage :P ), but don't worry; experiment around, and if you don't get it, i'll get some help for you. Yes Michael?Talk 15:22, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Copyright infringement (YET AGAIN!)

Spare an eye here. GaneshBhakt (talk) 16:26, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

This pic should be OK really. It says it is licensed under CC-BY-SA, and it also mentions that it is a Wikipedia mirror. Why not try searching for the file in commons? It might well be there. Yes Michael?Talk 16:34, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I uploaded this file. Do you think I infringed copyright, again? GaneshBhakt (talk) 16:45, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
No.  . The fair use tag seems to do the job. Though, with fair use files, make sure that you use them wherever absolutely needed. Usage anywhere else would be against fair use policy. Yes Michael?Talk 16:51, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm afraid I have to contradict. While commons:File:Mamata banerjee.jpg is fine, File:MamataBanerjee.jpg as a non-free file was clearly replaceable, both because she's a living public individual and because we indeed already have the other (better!) file, so it's deletable under WP:NFCC#1. Moreover, the tag itself, {{Non-free Indian-politician-photo}} explicitly says it's only applicable "when the image is unreplaceable, i.e., the subject is dead or missing". Since that is obviously not the case here, the image also fell under WP:CSD#F7a, "Non-free images or media with a clearly invalid fair-use tag", which made it deletable immediately. Fut.Perf. 19:02, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I think I have to stop doling out advice on Images :| . I seem to be particularly bad at it. Thanks for clearing it up Fut.Perf. Yes Michael?Talk 19:04, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

TC 210 Grassroots Lobbying Wiki

Hi Mike, Sorry our group hasn't been communicating much, our semester has gotten a little busy. We are almost done with our Wiki Project and we were hoping you could review what we have and let us know of any changes we need to make and how everything looks! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grassroots_lobbying Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Laurnicole17 (talkcontribs) 19:32, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Hey Laura, thanks for contacting me. My semester hasn't been good to me either. I will make notes at Talk:Grassroots lobbying. Yes Michael?Talk 20:00, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Which image do I use

Hey Mike! I just uploaded this image and this image. Which one do I use here and here.

GaneshBhakt (talk) 10:02, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Hey, give me a sec; will get back to you. Also a good idea to close the html tags :) . Yes Michael?Talk 13:15, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I think you have already used the files in the pages right? Yes Michael?Talk 13:58, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Please do not try and pass off unfree files as your own; I'm not accusing you, but this is just a note. You may risk being blocked. If they are indeed your own work, then my apologies. Yes Michael?Talk 15:00, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I am so, so, so, fed up of this guy biting me. Why doesn't he just get a life? GaneshBhakt (talk) 17:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Hehe, I know him actually; not personally though. He's active in outreach work. Don't worry, when you are doing things right, people will always support you. You will have your way. Yes Michael?Talk 17:59, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

About discussion going on Bharat name

Hi, I would like to know if you have gone through 25 points that I have clarified already. Do you see what I see - that in spite of giving reasons, the discussion has not moved ahead. So tell me what is it that I have not clarified and why is Bharat not included in the list - suggestions from your side..असक्तः सततं कार्य कर्म समाचर | असक्तः हि आचरन् कर्म.. 15:09, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

See, when there is no consensus, then there is no consensus. As plain as that. Your reasons may be valid according to you, but if other editors do not agree, then your proposals will not materialize. Just giving reasons are not enough. Other editors have to be convinced of them. Yes Michael?Talk 15:18, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Well I gave the example of Bharat Petroleum, and still people don't agree to see the thing as it is. With all the due facts and necessary information provided, it appears that the only reason for no consensus is that there is no consensus! What a pitiable state. These guys won't come out of English dictionary mentality and take others with it. I feel sorry for such a thing but who can help those who can't help themselves. Something which is as true as daylight in India, is somehow absent in English dictionaries after 150 years of Raaj!! What a sorry state of affairs!.असक्तः सततं कार्य कर्म समाचर | असक्तः हि आचरन् कर्म.. 15:38, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Oh well, each person is definitely entitled to his opinion, and so are you. Yes Michael?Talk 15:42, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
The thing is, I have presented all 25 doubts that have been put in the heading "no consensus on Bharat", the topic was raised immediately after Bharat that is India by a few editors. Now all the doubts are also clarified and so it seems that the only remaining hurdle is the "consensus" part! That is ridiculous, I have not seen such a behavior in all my academic life..असक्तः सततं कार्य कर्म समाचर | असक्तः हि आचरन् कर्म.. 15:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Just clearing the doubts (which, I think, you have not done satisfactorily) is not enough. It must be convincing. Yes Michael?Talk 15:56, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Which points out of 25 you see not good enough? I have presented Bharat Petroleum as a reference for everyday use too. If you can go through the 25 points in your spare time, it would be great and let me know which all points I have not been upto the mark..असक्तः सततं कार्य कर्म समाचर | असक्तः हि आचरन् कर्म.. 16:02, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Just let me know how many newspapers use Bharat in place of India in everyday use. How many journals use Bharat in place of India? Bharat petroleum is the name of a registered organisation. So are Hindustan petroleum and Indian Oil. I don't want a repeat of the discussion here; it will be of no use whatsoever. If you need consensus on the issue, raise it appropriately at the talk page. Yes Michael?Talk 16:23, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
http://www.bharatchronicle.com/, for one. Though I am sure any newspaper would be a registered company too, where they have to note their name down. As it is, one can't register two names and I don't think writing India negates Bharat. Anyways, let me know if you see another issue with points discussed over there..असक्तः सततं कार्य कर्म समाचर | असक्तः हि आचरन् कर्म.. 16:37, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I meant the usage of the term Bharat by newspapers. Yes Michael?Talk 16:39, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
There are some [| here], [| here], [|| here], [| here], [| here], [| here], [| here] and so on. I can go on finding out, but it does exist..असक्तः सततं कार्य कर्म समाचर | असक्तः हि आचरन् कर्म.. 16:49, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
If I wasn't clear enough, I meant independent use of the word Bharat, as a replacement for India. Yes Michael?Talk 16:54, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Scholarship

Do you think that I would be able to get the scholarship for Wikimania 2011? Vibhijain (talk) 13:44, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

I wouldn't think so, considering that the application deadline was Jan 31 :). Good luck for 2012. Yes Michael?Talk 16:35, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Mike

Thanks for reverting vandalism in my talk page. Its been under attack all weeks by [Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of PONDHEEPANKAR this guy] in retaliation for filing the latest SPI against him. My user page has been semi protected and i have asked for semi protection for talk page as well. I wanted to let you know, in the past he has also targetted people reverting his vandalism and he might return to vandalise your talk/user pages as well. Thanks again for the help--Sodabottle (talk) 14:29, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

That is quite a lot of socks! Yes Michael?Talk 16:33, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

World Cup

Well I think if Entering Authentic and Correct Information on Wikipedia is Wrong then I don't think I need to get into all this. I know what i was doing is Right and Majority also Agrees with me. And Uselessly warning Users on doing the Right things is Anti-Ethical. I hope now u Get it. thank you KS700 (talk) 13:57, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

check out this template: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Juniper_Networks i think that is too much information without any notability...what say you? PratikMallya 13:52, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

I tend to think on the same lines. Yes Michael?Talk 17:26, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism?

While you may not agree with this edit, I'm not sure it merited a warning for vandalism. --NeilN talk to me 19:43, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

I believe that the section was removed after discussion; anyway, I guess you may be right, I probably should have used the template for removal of content. But then, if you'll notice the name of the user, while not a UPOL, probably suggests the nature of the NPOV edits we can expect to see. Yes Michael?Talk 03:31, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

ICC Cricket World Cup

moved to proper place Yes Michael?Talk 03:35, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

I fear there are quite a few other articles with the ICC name in them, aside from the ones you've already reverted (for which, thank you). The user seems to have been quite thorough with, for example, 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup Final and similar. Johnlp (talk) 20:33, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know that. I wish there was a way to move pages en masse. I guess an admin will have to do that. Yes Michael?Talk 03:38, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Padmashali

Hey Mike, any thoughts on Padmashali? I've made some attempts to clean it up a bit (MOS stuff, removing long lists of names), but as I don't know much about the topic, I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks! OhNoitsJamie Talk 14:49, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Most of it seems to be written from old tales; and I doubt whether we can find sufficient mention of the caste in reliable sources. I'll clean it up once my internet connection is back on track. My ISP seems to have taken a long hike. Yes Michael?Talk 16:52, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm having a lot of trouble loading and editing pages as well. I think it's a wiki server problem. OhNoitsJamie Talk 16:59, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
I'm reduced to having to at google cached pages of Wikipedia. Will clean it up tomorrow. Got to get some sleep :) . Catch ya soon. Yes Michael?Talk 17:26, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
No rush. Thanks, OhNoitsJamie Talk 17:30, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at it. On one hand, it's an unsourced mess, but I didn't feel comfortable completely gutting it given my lack of knowledge about the topic. OhNoitsJamie Talk 17:26, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Some of it may actually be true, but I tend to think that it would be almost impossible to find any reliable sources. Till then, I think its better off removed. These caste stuff are very sensitive in India. Yes Michael?Talk 17:34, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
I mean true in the sense that such stories actually exist in mythology. Not that I believe in much of it :P Yes Michael?Talk 17:39, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

thanks for assessing

Hi MikeLynch, Thanks for assessing public policy articles! The improvement in article quality is a testament to your work with the WP:USPP. I hope you will continue to assess with the public policy team. ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 18:04, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Trouted

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

You have been trouted for: Our experience in the past has been rather frustrating and disappointing. But one cannot lose hope

I don't mind the trout, but I'd appreciate it if you could stop vandalising my talkpage. Regards, Yes Michael?Talk 13:12, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Didi

Dear Mike, Buddho Babu has tendered his resignation and Mamata has already approached the governor, ass you can see here. So she technically is the CM of Bengal. If not CM, till the 18th of May, we can change the title to CM-designate. GaneshBhakt (talk) 15:58, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Till Didi takes over, Buddha is technically still the caretaker CM. Yes Michael?Talk 16:18, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
Though it seems to be just a matter of time. Yes Michael?Talk 16:37, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Kaveri

I'm still working on finishing the move. The talk page is next. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:37, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

While I agree that this edit may qualify as "massive", I don't know that it was really that helpful.[1] Wikipedia isn't a directory. Nor did this edit necessarily represent much effort, since there are tools which convert spreadsheets into tables. I'm afraid that one good edit is not enough to compensate for numerous, unrepentant violations and disruptions.   Will Beback  talk  05:46, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

If you look at many FLs, most of them are of this nature, FLs like this, also have extra information (including ELs). While I agree that Wikipedia is not a directory, information like this could be given in lists. I had also asked for a peer review of the article. I'm sure that if any material violating WP:NOT were there, the reviewer would have mentioned it.
About the particular edit, it is not quite easy as it seems. The source is a brochure (which is available in printed form only), and typing material for more than 150 entries is no mean task. I typed it out for over 20 colleges, and that alone took me a hour.
However, having said all this above, I do not know about the copyvios by the user, but his conduct towards me so far has been satisfactory, and I feel that he may not err again. Though it is totally upto you to decide, and I will respect your decision completely. Thank you! Yes Michael?Talk 09:31, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Creating New Page

Hello MikeLynch, I wanted to know the proper procedure and method for creating a new page. I want to create this page on this Popular Singer as it is not already there. Also i wanted to know how i can add information, references and links to the Page. Maybe if you can help me on this one. Thanks KS700 (talk) 17:51, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Go to the search box on the top right of the page, and search for the article you want to create. If it doesn't exist, a red link will be displayed, saying "create the page on this wiki". Click the redlink, and start filling in information on the page. Try reading Wikipedia:Your first article. Lynch7Talk 18:04, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

WP:USPP Spring Assessment 3

hi MikeLynch,

Thanks for helping with assessment! I was excited to see you are helping out. There is a new assessment posted here. There are 25 articles in both this assessment and the next/final assessment. There was a huge amount of content that got added this term, hopefully the randomly selected articles will show it to be high quality. You should see some results from the assessments in the coming months. Please, let me know if you have any comments or questions about research with the Public Policy Initiative.
