List of acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom edit

I'd appreciate your input regarding whether the above list should be at List of acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom or List of Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom. See Talk:List of acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom#Move. Hiding T 12:03, 24 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've commented there. Really, all of our article/category titles should match; and that article should, in my opinion, reside at List of Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom or List of acts of parliaments in the United Kingdom. My personal preference is to treat "Act of Parliament" as a compound noun, with both A and P capitalised when either the Act or the Parliament is a specific one. Thorny issue though. — mholland (talk) 14:57, 25 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notability of residential colleges edit

You previously commented at WikiProject Colleges & Universities about the notability of college/university residences and other campus buildings. A RFC has been submitted on the best way to deal with the existence of many Wikipedia articles on residence halls and dormitories at colleges and universities that may not be notable. Your input and feedback would be appreciated at the RFC. Madcoverboy (talk) 23:18, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:Teesside University logo.png) edit

Thanks for uploading File:Teesside University logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 17:35, 13 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is an old version of the University of Gloucestershire logo on the wikipedia page. Please could you replace it with this one:

University of Salford logo on Salford Business School edit

The logo is indeed the University's but the School is one of the academic elements of the University and University policy clearly states that there is no sub-branding. This would suggest that the University logo is appropriately attached to the School. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.87.147.104 (talk) 12:06, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia's non-free content policy requires that use of unlicensed copyrighted media be kept to a minimum (and that its use is necessary to a proper understanding of the relevant topic). The Salford logo is appropriately used at University of Salford, but not on other articles associated with the university. A good/useful alternative for the infobox would be a photo of something associated with the school (as in Bristol Law School, University of Glasgow Medical School, University of Birmingham Medical School). — mholland (talk) 12:44, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Holly Smith - Local Edition edit

Hi Mholland.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to use your photograph of Keele University for our 'Newcastle-under-Lyme & Keele' Local Edition publication.

Local Edition is a weekly digital property publication, delivered to thousands of homemovers every week.

We currently have twenty four editions and an example of our current 'Newcastle under Lyme & Keele' edition can be found at the following link: http://rightmove.digi-page.net/?id=newcastlekeele

I found your image on a google search and thought it would be an excellant replacement for the image we are using at the moment.

For each photo we use we would provide an acknowledgement on the front cover with your name, the name of the photo and, if you wish, we could have a link to your profile page of wikipedia, or if you have another website you would like us to link to.

Many thanks for your time,

Holly Smith (wikipedia username: Localedition) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Localedition (talkcontribs) 16:48, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Holly,
Photographs I've uploaded for Wikipedia are available for re-use under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike licence. You are welcome to use that photograph in accordance with that licence - please credit the photo to "M. Holland"; no link required. If you're looking for similar "free" images in the future, you may find Flickr (Flickr CC search for "Keele University") and the Wikimedia Commons (Commons homepage) are more useful than Google. Best wishes — mholland (talk) 17:43, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Wscc logo.png edit

Hey, thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure of the original reason for deleting the logo from the electoral division articles, as they pertain specifically to WSCC and thought that I'd understood the terms of the rationale and logo use rules for non-free logos, but am happy to go along with your advice, I'll check that the logo isn't used on any future articles. cheers.

History of the London School of Economics edit

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of History of the London School of Economics, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://articles.gourt.com/en/London%20School%20of%20Economics. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 00:07, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

naming edit

Please provide me with the link to the naming convention which you refer to in your The Lancaster University edit summary. This would be very informative. If you are mistaken, it still may be reasonable to not use "The". User F203 (talk) 14:34, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. Apologies for not linking it in the edit summary. The naming convention I was thinking of is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (definite and indefinite articles at beginning of name). Also relevant is WP:COMMONNAME - the university is chartered as "the University of Lancaster", but trades as Lancaster University. As the more commonly used of the two options, our article resides at that title. — mholland (talk) 14:51, 28 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

LSE people edit

I appreciate you trying to clean the LSE page. It was definitely too long. However, when you deleted the alumni/people section a while back, there were a couple pieces of interesting information that went with your delete. I know it's a pain, but if you're going to do a big edit because some info is covered elsewhere, then make sure all the information is actually covered elsewhere. My gripe/lost edit was very small, but somewhat close to my heart. Thanks. 82.35.193.47 (talk) 02:24, 14 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

If I removed something that wasn't covered at the main article, List of London School of Economics people, it's probably because the information wasn't referenced. I've taken out quite a few unsourced sentences from the LSE article. My apologies if I erased any good, sourced material by accident. — mholland (talk) 19:20, 14 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

LSBU Entry edit

Thank you for cleaning up our university page but from the audit trail of changes it appears you have put up a past version of our institution's profile and my comprehensive July changes have been overwritten. I hope that hasn't also affected the level of detail appearing in our history section. The university's Archivists spent time editing these. Although I'm sure your intentions were good this has left us with a heavier work load. Rachelwebeditor (talk) 11:34, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

DMU Clephan Building.jpg edit

Hi,

Thanks for your message regarding the copyright permissions on the file I uploaded. I'm a bit of a newbie to Wikipedia, so apologies in advance. The image in question is from my university's website, on the page located on this URL. I don't think they would be too fussed regarding copyright if I were to straight-up email them, given the context of the article I have tagged it in.

I understand that it is replaceable, but just wanted to double-check with you that there are no easier alternatives rather than emailing for permission or taking a picture of the building myself.

Thanks,

Jack Jack.OSull (talk) 14:35, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. The University would have to release the image freely for anyone else to use - permitting us to use it on Wikipedia is insufficient, and it's often a bit of a hassle explaining this and getting permission in an appropriate form. It's quite a small image, so taking a photo of the building yourself, and releasing it under a free licence would be ideal. For more detail on the rules for uploading images, have a look at the Wikipedia:Image use policy. Thank you! — mholland (talk) 00:51, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I have now taken a picture of the building myself and licensed it freely, as you have suggested. Problem sorted, thank you for your help! Jack.OSull (talk) 19:26, 4 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:University of Nottingham arms.png edit

Thanks for uploading File:University of Nottingham arms.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 13:01, 22 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:British Universities and Colleges Sport logo.png edit

A tag has been placed on File:British Universities and Colleges Sport logo.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
