SoCal edit-a-thons on October 21 and 25 edit

Upcoming SoCal edit-a-thons: UC Riverside (10/21, 10am-3pm) and Unforgetting L.A. (10/25, 9am-5pm)

Dear fellow Wikipedian,

The Southern California Wikipedia community has two more events scheduled for the month of October: a water-related edit-a-thon at UC Riverside, and an Unforgetting L.A. event at the Los Angeles Archives Bazaar in conjunction with L.A. as Subject!

As part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries and to celebrate Open Access Week, UC Riverside is participating alongside other Western Waters Digital Library members in an edit-a-thon focusing on water issues. Join students and faculty learning how to edit! This event will take place on Tuesday, October 21 from 10am to 3pm at UCR's Orbach Science Library (map). RSVPs are requested here.

The Unforgetting L.A. edit-a-thon and training workshop will take place at the 9th annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar, and is hosted by online magazine East of Borneo in partnership with L.A. as Subject. Join us on Saturday, October 25 from 9am to 5pm at the USC Doheny Memorial Library (map). Beginners welcome! Please RSVP here if you plan to attend.

I hope to see you there! Calliopejen1 (talk) - via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:06, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

User:Tijolein, long term abuse, sock troll edit

You recently blocked User:Tijolein for vandalism, but I believe he is also a long term sockpuppet, vandalizing the Witton Albion F.C. article. He fits a pattern of users who have created accounts, done 10 edits (thereby becoming autoconfirmed) to an inactive users talk page, reverting all his previous changes with the 10th edit, and then changing the seating capacity at the stadium in the F.C article. See the contributions of User:Jtoiilne, User:Rom4eva, User:Tyeljoy, User:DWaretson, User:EyJoin, and the archived sockpuppet investigations at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/GoldenGlory84/Archive

He made a mistake this time, in picking a "retired" user who still had email notification of talk page edits active. If it wouldn't be out of line for a "retired" editor to suggest, perhaps user page, and user talk page edits should not count towards attaining autoconfirmed status. I'm no longer interested in hunting down sock puppets, but in the interest of helping the encyclopedia, I felt that notifying someone in authority would be appropriate. Question regarding deleted page edit

I saw a school where I work was listed in the page below but did not have a completed entry linked. I made a Wikipedia account to make an entry for the school. The naming convention for the account was violated to imply I represented a group. I now understand the naming convention.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_schools_in_Taiwan

I made the content for the link below. I do not see how the content is fundamentally different (i.e. more advertising) than the content on the pages of other schools on the list in the link above, or schools generally. Quite the contrary, the content I uploaded was factual (e.g. referencing historical events, the class size, the Catholic mission) without making any claims comparing the school to other schools.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dominican_International_School_Kaohsiung&action=edit&redlink=1

Before putting in new content about the same school, the Wikipedia page asked me to check in with you. Any advice would be appreciated. If I put in the content again will it be left up or deleted again?

Why the removal edit

Hi. I think you removed my thread on Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents regarding user 64.183.48.206. I'm not sure why. It was only there a few days and the issue had not yet been resolved. Bob Caldwell CSL (talk) 14:31, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I've checked the page history and all revisions around my recent edits there and i can't see a post of yours, or any content of your that any post of mine removed. Maybe an edit conflict? Mfield (Oi!) 15:27, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
My original post was made at 17:38 on 31 October 2014. It had the title of "64.183.48.206 A repeat offender". I do not know for sure that you removed it, but your edits to the page are the only ones I see that deleted sections. I admit that the edits for this page are not easy for me to understand.

Bob Caldwell CSL (talk) 17:19, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I was just redacting sensitive content all within that one section, there's nothing of yours in the content i hid for sure. Mfield (Oi!) 18:00, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
The best way to find it would be to look at your contributions. I see you created the entry on Oct 31, which has now been archived off the page, hence why you don't see it. It can be found at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/IncidentArchive861#64.183.48.206_A_repeat_offender Mfield (Oi!) 18:12, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your help. Does this mean that no one is looking at it any longer? Five days is awfully quick to remove something like this. Is everything automatically removed in that time period? There are posts that are older than mine yet they still appear.Bob Caldwell CSL (talk) 18:56, 4 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Whose Daughter Is She? edit

You recently deleted the article Whose Daughter Is She? as the creation of a blocked or banned editor. Although the creator probably intended it as a joke, I saw that the subject was the work of well-known actors, and was referenced in several other articles (including its own article on the French and German wikipediae), and I did a fair amount of work, completely changing the article from the original, finding references and so on. Is there any way to bring the article back? I have no connection with the original editor. Thanks for your help. ubiquity (talk) 16:43, 7 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have moved a copy of the most recent version into Your userspace where you can work on it until its safely improved and distinctive enough from the version that was repeatedly recreated by the blocked user. Once you have done that, ask myself or another admin to move the article back into place, as the article is protected from user recreation at this point. Mfield (Oi!) 17:15, 7 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help, Mfield. I think the article is already sufficiently improved. The original article was simply a sentence fragment copied from a TV guide. I have added additional information, an info box, wikilinks, sections, valid references, external links, categories, and interwiki links. Please let me know if you think more needs to be done. ubiquity (talk) 19:00, 7 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Query about an unblock request edit

Hi, Mfield. A few days ago I reviewed an unblock request at User talk:Bakchod baba, for a username hardblock that you placed. I know nothing about the name, and have no idea what you thought was offensive about it, but I declined the block because the editing from the account had violated the WP:BLP policy. The editor has now said that he or she will not do the same again, which inclines me to give a WP:ROPE unblock. However, he/she has not offered another username (or, to be absolutely precise, has offered another username which is the same apart from capitalisation). Since, as I have already said, I don't know what you regard as offensive about the username, I am here to consult you about it. The editor says that the username "is not offensive in any way shape or form". Do you still stand by your view that it is unacceptable, and if so can you say why? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:30, 8 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

The name had appeared on WP:UAA, the original report claiming it was offensive in Hindi was followed by another user providing a link to Urban Dictionary which confirmed it. It may well have less offensive meaning depending on the context it is used in, but I don't have a sense that it suggests good intention on the part of the user to want to hold on to it. Certainly not unless they can explain what they believe it means when more than one other editor has commented on it. Mfield (Oi!) 16:49, 8 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

My edits were accurate. Ray was my Dad. Too much NFL BS these days. Of course, they probably pay to delete. Hey, it is a Wiki...

The "Ganges" article refers to the larger river. "Ganga" is the river within India. 2 entirely different things. It likes Calculus --> Differential versus Integral. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MonaPisser (talkcontribs) 18:12, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Can u suggest a suitable Dispute forum at this wiki.for Ganga edit

Subject sez it all. MonaPisser (talk) 18:58, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

There is no dispute as you have not engaged in any dialog. All you have done is edit war (assuming this really is your only account here). Until you have exhausted the option of establishing consensus with other editors via talk page discussion, any talk of looking for dispute resolution is moot. Mfield (Oi!) 19:03, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Are we mutually clear that I was NOT disturbing Ganges but creating a NEW spin-off from it about the "Ganga" portion of the river which is exclusively within India and leaving out the Bangladesh section.
As we agree there is no dispute. Has even a single editor disagreed with the new article's content or scope ? Now that my bonafides are made clear let me carry on with my edits.
Don't you Borgs have tools to check for multiple accounts ?MonaPisser (talk) 19:12, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
As you are an experienced editor you should have no problem creating the article you intend in your userspace, and then either submitting it for comment and inclusion via AfC or if you feel it's good enough right away, by asking an admin to move it straight into articlespace. That would seem to be a much easier and less confrontational route. Mfield (Oi!) 19:19, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'll hold you to that ;-). I propose that I peacefully develop the "Ganga" article over at my verified a/c at Citizendium. My RW ID at CZpedia will be enough to show my expertise / scholarship on Indian rivers. Once I'm ready, I'll be back. MonaPisser (talk) 19:46, 9 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Username edit

About, um, this guy. IMO this is a serious and blatant username policy violation. Just think, can you say his name on American television? Anyway, I'm trying to discuss it with him now. You can keep an eye on the discussion if you'd like. Regards, --AmaryllisGardener talk 05:13, 10 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I don't consider the word bastard to be particularly egregious. It's highly context dependent. You can certainly say it on UK television, and there has been at least one famous movie with the word in the title. I think Wikipedia:Username_policy#Consider_leaving_well_alone may also be pertinent here. I'll keep an eye on the discussion though. Mfield (Oi!) 05:17, 10 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
You should be certain you have read through the user's talkpage articles where this has been brought up before also. here's one (i haven't looked through for any others.) where a user talks about the name but makes no complaint about it. Mfield (Oi!) 05:25, 10 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Da Cow 2.7 edit

Hello, Mfield. Special:Contributions/Da Cow 2.7 has decided to ignore your questions and continue editing. - Hoops gza (talk) 23:24, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Mfield, sorry, but I don't get it--I just can't jump from the modern, conversational "da" (for "the") to a concentration camp. Drmies (talk) 22:09, 25 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
    • You don't see the potential to infer Dachau (which is pronounced da-cow) from Da Cow? Mfield (Oi!) 22:26, 25 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
      • It wasn't my complaint FWIW, i just responded to a UAA report, but the (intended or unintended) similarity is obvious and might clearly be taken as offensive to someone with a relative who passed through there. What I find corroborative is the users unwillingness to respond to multiple questions about the name. If it's that innocent, then explain it. Unless I am missing the popularity of illiterate people referring casually to Cows. Mfield (Oi!) 06:20, 26 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
        • Mfield, I'll ping you since this already archived--"Dachau" is pronounced that way only by Americans, and not by all of them. I see the potential, but it's a stretch: "might be taken as offensive etc", that's just a bit too esoteric for my case and I wouldn't block for it. Moreover, I don't know if you know this, but Hoops gza has a lengthy history of making rather silly cases at UAA; see also User talk:Edgar181, "Usernames". Thanks, Drmies (talk) 21:58, 26 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
