Quercus & dab page

FYI, I moved the portion of the history relevant to the dab page over to Quercus (disambiguation)...if nothing else, it leaves the other obscure meanings in the page history at the dab page, rather than at Quercus proper. Guettarda (talk) 15:10, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi Melburnian -- feel free, of course, to ignore the above bogus and ill-advised warning, since your editing has been constructive without fail. Query: do you know what mechanism towns in Australia use to incorporate, or give themselves the status of gazetted entities? I wanted to use the correct terminology on the talk page for Marysville, Victoria. Unless the town charter (or what you call it in Victoria) is abolished, the town continues to exist, as I will try to explain politely to Avala in a moment. I issued a warning to a user who made an edit that consisted only of removing 10 references and nothing else. If he wants to be constructive he should attempt to reword, or try to do something rather than remove content. Removing references is none of the actions that I would consider benign. It doesn't mean I was looking to get anyone blocked or labeled as a vandal, I just wanted for this user to pay attention so he would know that he made a mistake and hopefully in the future he will make constructive rather than destructive edits. If he couldn't contribute to the article, if the only action he came up with at that moment was to hit the delete button ten times, then he should have refrained from making that edit. That's all. While we're on the subject of "paying attention", are you aware that the substance of Melburnian's edit was the removal of the false claim that Marysville is no longer a town? I guess you must not have noticed that, else your assertion that his edit "consisted only of removing 10 references and nothing else" would be a blatant lie. Also on the subject of "paying attention", did you notice that Melburnian gave a rationale for the removal in his edit summary? I guess you must not have noticed, else you would not have used a template that is clearly inappropriate in the circumstances, since it contains the text "without giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary". Oh, and I guess you haven't paid much attention to WP:UTM, else you would know that, this being Melburnian's first "offense", you should have hit him with uw-delete1 not uw-delete2. [jumping to conclusions based on your contribs] yes, I looked long and hard at rufistylis too. The leaves fit, the distribution fits, the bracts definitely fit. The flowers are in very early bud; is it possible that the styles are hidden within the perianth-tube, so that one cannot tell whether they are rufi or not?

List of localities in Victoria (Australia)

As you have seen I have finally made good my threat of redoing this list (and renaming it)-fairly complete, a few places yet unlocated and may be some neighbourhoods placed in the wrong locality (on the other side of road or creek etc) so could use some help on this (All the spelling is OK though)- Many of the linked articles where all the info. is supposed to be will need some work but I will be doing this shortly. Could it be 2 or 3 page list?? If so, I dont know how to achieve this. Thanks for your help, Millers Forest is obviously a mistake which dates back to 1912 Post Office lists, placed by error in Victoria so we can forget that one(Epistemos (talk) 04:01, 4 April 2009 (UTC)).

I have been racking my brains trying to comprehend the reason given here.

Dryandra sp. 1 (A.S. George 16647) is a nomenclatural synonym of Dryandra acanthopoda A.S.George.

Reason: From A.S.George 7.12.1993 S.Curry 17.1.1994

For a while there I was working on the theory that "A.S.George 7.12.1993" referred to the specimen (by collector and date), and "S.Curry 17.1.1994" refers to a paper in which Curry referred to this specimen by a manuscript name. I note that in 1994 Curry published an internal report entitled The technical curation of the declared rare and priority flora in the W.A. Herbarium; and B. acanthopoda is indeed a priority flora. All of this seemed plausible... except that the type specimen of B. acanthopoda was collected by George in 1986, so any name based on a specimen collected in 1993 cannot be a nomenclatural synonym; at best it might be a taxonomic synonym. FoA indicates that this is the 1986 type specimen. Clearly this specimen must have been published as a manuscript name at some point, and "From A.S.George 7.12.1993 S.Curry 17.1.1994" is supposed to tell me where. :-( Sorry for thinking out loud on your talk page. That's can't be right: it implies that I haven't previously shown signs.

I'm still not really satisfied; I can't find copies of the list(s) for 1993 and 1994, and I can't seem to web up anything that ties George and Curry to them; so it is still speculation. Possibly back then a botanist would add a name to an internal list through an internal process.

Hibbertia scandens

Hello Melburnian. Thanks for correctly pointing out that reference #1 does not specifically mention the "unpleasant odour" as resembling that of naphtha. Therefore, I edited the page again to make mention of the naphtha after the citation. I have personally experienced the odour on a specimen of Hibbertia scandens on North Stradbroke. Please do not delete it again. If you have a suggestion on resolving the matter to our mutual satisfaction, I would be glad to pursue it further. Many thanks. Plant and Garden wiki

Hi Melburnian, I'm writing to you because you've edited many of the plant articles. I wanted to let you know about a plants-specific wiki site which you might be interested in contributing to. The site focuses specifically on how to grow any plant. Since Wikipedia is not a how-to, and articles are not allowed to be written as a guide on how to grow plants, two years ago I started http://www.plants.am - a wiki solely to address that topic (much like how wikitravel.org is solely to advise tourists visiting a country or city on their destination).

An example of how the sites differ can be seen immediately by comparing the Wikipedia article on Tamarind, with the Plants.am Tamarind article. Many of the articles currently on the site are placeholder articles taken from Wikipedia which are being rewritten from scratch, or shells of articles using new templates. However, a core of new articles like the Asparagus article (which still has a lot of room to grow) are being created, and the undertaking is huge. Perhaps you have some materials you can add which are not appropriate for Wikipedia. Twelve Apostles (Victoria)

Hi Melburnian, thanks for the information and update, I haven't been there and most google image searches for "Elephant Rock Victoria" appear to mistakenly turn out an image of the Island Archway (pre-collapse). Thus the mistake on my part! Judging by the results of the search, it must be a common mistake.

Yes it seems to be - it did look somewhat like an elephant from the rear view, and it was probably the feature in the area that looked most like an elephant after the "trunk" part of Elephant Rock collapsed many years ago :) Melburnian (talk) 04:01, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

  • I will be definitely doing some more alpine walks as the weather gets better again. I went up to the tarn shelf (mt field nat park) but was confronted with a downpour and extremely poor visibility moments before arriving at the Nothofagus gunnii, so I didn't get any photos of that in it's deciduous stage. Anyway, I'm writing back again as I clicked on Eucalyptus regnans and noted that "Tasmanian Oak" was included as a common name. As far as I know this name is used as a blanket term for three species, E. delegatensis, E. regnans and E. obliqua. http://www2.gunns.com.au/timber/tasoak.html is a ref for that. 1925-26 & 1943-44 bushfire info

Nice contributions :] I've incorporated the info into articles for national bushfire seasons for each season. Information specific to a particular event or day or season I recon would go best in it's own article, like "Black Sunday" for the 1925-26 season, and info on a regular season should go in the national season article so we can later incorporate info on the bushfire season around the country, not just Victoria. I'm not sure, what were the circumstances of Black Sunday Feb-March? In the past fires have been ignited on a particular day, then continue to burn for a period of time, these large ignition events are usually named, even if the fires continue to burn afterwards. I'm disappointed. I anticipated that the articles at the top would represent surprising gaps in our coverage; and therefore creating them would counter systemic bias.
