Though the article seems well written, the cited sources do not demonstrate that the subject is 'notable' using Wikipedia guidelines. You may want to look at the notability guide for musicians at WP:MUSICBIO and re-submit the article if you can explain how it meets these parameters. All the best! Thankyou for your message on my Talk page. Yes, I agree, Wikipedia can be confusing, argh!! Did you manage to take a look at WP:MUSICBIO, particularly Part 1? To be 'notable' in Wikipedia terms, the subject has to have been the focus of 'multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable and are independent from the musician'. This normally means 'newspaper articles, books, magazine articles, online versions of print media, and television documentaries'. If Spiegel has received significant coverage in at least two reliable published works, it will help your case if you can provide details in your article. At the moment the sources you have listed do not seem to be reliable because they seem to (also) syndicate self-published blogs and user-submitted content. I hope that helps you somewhat.

Hi,

I hope I'm replying in the correct manner on the "Talk Page."

I admit to being a bit embarrassed. I was a senior editor of one of the most respected reference publications in the nation for more than a decade, yet I can't seem to get the hang of the Wiki platform.

Why are the Internet Movie Database and the All Music Guide not considered good, verifiable sources? At Current Biography, we found them the best secondary sources available for subjects in the arts. Have you found reason to doubt their accuracy?

Additionally, did you notice the Times of India coverage in the ref section?

Perhaps the problem is technical? Am I using the Wiki Markup Language properly in listing references and sources?

Frankly, I would love to see Russ Spiegel listed in Wikipedia, but I'm spending as long on this as I spend on 3,000-word pieces for print publication. Can you help me resolve any remaining issues in a timely manner?

How is it possible that "stub" articles with far fewer links than I provide proliferate on Wikipedia? I ask not to be ca pain, but because I'm becoming somewhat frustrated and truly want to understand the process.

The 'Times of India' article is exactly the sort of thing Wikipedia is looking for. It is undeniably a good source. If you could find at least one other good published print source it may be enough to demonstrate general 'notability' as Wikipedia defines it.

WP:MUSICBIO is particularly written to help WP editors understand how musicians can be shown to be 'notable' and worthy of a WP article. If you can prove that Spiegel meets any one of the other requirements listed, then that would be an equally valid way to get your article accepted.

I agree, there are some articles on Wikipedia that shouldn't be here. When they are spotted, they are often removed. Sionk (talk) 22:37, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sionk, I'm confused. I thought the article makes plain that Spiegel meets not just one other, but several other listed requirements.

For example:

No. 5: Release on important indie labels (most definitely--see previous note. If you yourself don't recognize the labels, is it possible to get input from a Wikipedia editor who may be more of a jazz lover? They will surely be familiar with Steeplechase!)

No. 7: Winning a major competition (Spiegel was honored for his contributions to the arts by the City of Frankfurt. Very few people can say the same.)

No. 10: Appearance on a major TV show (In addition to acting on The Naked Brothers Band series, which aired on Nickelodean, Spiegel was the official on-set instructor who taught the young stars to play the guitar. It's fair to say that without him, there might have been no Naked Brothers Band. You might not consider that a big deal, but millions of fans would disagree. He has several other TV and movie credits as well.

Let me, finally, take the liberty of directing you once again to the German Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russ_Spiegel I am certain that the international editions of Wikipedia have quite high standards as well!

I hope the information I've reiterated is sufficient. I hate to keep bothering you, but I'm determined to understand this process. Given that I once edited a profile of your own Jimmy Wales for Current Biography, I refuse to believe that I am not capable of posting a Wikipedia article! • • In response I would point out that:
    
  • Steeplechase is certainly a recognised Indie Jazz label, the other two are not. That would mean Spiegel only has one album released on a notable record label.
    
  • Spiegel was a music instructor on the Nickolodeon TV series, he did not star in it or appear on the cast list, as far as I can see.
    
  • A study scholarship from Frankfurt University is not on the same par as a Grammy, Juno or Mercury award, I'm sure you'll agree.

Unfortunately WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a valid argument to get an article accepted. It looks like the German article should not be on WP either, but because I am not active on German WP I'm not in a position to do anything about it.

Personally I'm not setting out to find reasons not to accept your article but, approaching it objectively, I can't find enough proof to satisfy the minimum notability requirements of Wikipedia. It seems a second editor also agrees with me. I hope you're not too disheartened and will continue to contribute to the project! Sionk (talk) 01:17, 4 January 2012 (UTC)
