My questions

Photo License Question

I have someone from the Katy Railroad Historical Society who is sending me images. He knows I want to put them on Wiki. What do I do to stop getting warnings?

I have used an image from rr-fallenflags.org which permits use of the images as long as the source is credited (see the page). How do I stop getting warnings about this?

One solution could be (I think) to ask him if he's willing to put a notice on his website that he licences the photos under GFDL. GFDL requires giving credit (I think) so maybe that will satisfy him. Or, he might not want to state on his website that they're licenced under GFDL, but he might be willing to send an email to that effect to the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm not an expert on copyright, though, so see the appropriate instruction pages rather than running with my suggestions. --Coppertwig (talk) 17:39, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Here are some standard instructions, copied from part of {{sd-copyvio}}. This is more for text, I guess; I'm not sure if it's different for images. (Put the name of the page instead of "Pagename".) Actually, images are usually uploaded to Commons rather than Wikipedia; they can very easily be displayed on a page here if they're at Commons.

If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

• If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Pagename and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
• If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Pagename with a link to where we can find that note.
• If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Pagename.

However, for text content, you may want to consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you, and please feel free to continue contributing to Wikipedia.

Table Question

How do I make the default vertical alignment for all cells in a table "top" alignment?

I would like "California Zephyr" and "Californian", and their endpoints and dates to align to the top of their cells instead of the middle. I don't want to do this on a cell-by-cell basis, I want it to be the default for the table.

Major Update Question

I find the List of named passenger trains very cumbersome to use. I have taken the data from these pages and created a set of pages at User:Lownen/Named Trains which I would like to submit as replacements for the older pages. How do I go about this?

Hello there! Unfortunately, your wonderfully organized article would not be allowed in the main article space. Per Wikipedia:Subpages, "Using subpages for permanent content that is meant to be part of the encyclopedia" is a disallowed use. This is quite unfortunate as you have created a wonderful organization for this article.

If you can find a way to re-write the article not using subpages and want to update the article, simply overwrite the current version with your new version. If you have any other questions, feel free to post here or on my talk page. Best regards! --omtay38 00:56, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Some assistance / feedback please

I became interested in contributing to Wiki when I looked up the Texas Special and didn't find it... I found a long list of named trains but no Texas Special.

I created a Texas Special page, and in researching it found a roster of streamlined cars made for the Texas Special and the Meteor. Of course, I found no Meteor page, so I made one.

In the course of all of this I became very frustrated with the List of named passenger trains, so I built a reorganized version in my private pages and posted a {{helpme}} saying I'd like to see them used in place of the older pages.

I got no feedback from anyone in the Named passenger train group, but the Wikipedian who did give me feedback encouraged me to replace the existing pages with mine. Because this was a major change I didn't do that; I named my main page Named Trains and used names that didn't conflict for the other pages.

I see that this group is active so I came here for assistance. I know its not a good idea to have multiple copies of the same information laying around, so I'd be grateful if someone in an official capacity could resolve this. I have basically put two days into this reorganization and I sincerely hope you'll appreciate the enhancements.

I'm sure you'll get other responses in due course, but while you're waiting, have you considered submitting a fact about Texas Special for the Did You Know? feature? You only have a small window of opportunity (about 5 days after article creation), but it is worth doing. The Meteor article is unlikely to qualify, however, as it is currently not much more than a large table (the 'Special' includes a good deal of history prose).

As for the 'List', what exactly was your problem with the page? Agreed it would be good if the tables all had the same width, format and column headings, but was there anything else aside from that? I suspect that all your pages will need moving (renaming), even if only because "Named Trains" should have a lower-case 'T'. Also, there is a WP convention that list articles should be identified as such -- your articles are still lists (or tables) of named trains, rather than being articles about the concept/history/development of 'named trains'.

I hope this is a little help to you, even if it is rather negative. I recognise that you are relatively new to WP, so you will not be familiar with many of the conventions. Other editors, more familiar with the articles in question, will be able to comment further.

Re: Comments on MKT page

My comment wasn't that there aren't MKT models widely available (I have several that I run on NTrak layouts too; and as a former Class I railroad, I'd be surprised if there weren't models available commercially), it was in response to the entry that I removed from the article that asserted "The Texas Special is a popular prototype in Model Railroading." While it may be a favored train specifically with MKT modelers or with modelers along the train's former route, I've seen almost no models of this prototype at the model railroad shows I attend (I've displayed NTrak modules at Trainfest and several other shows around the Midwest for the last 12 years) or any of the NMRA national conventions that I've attended (the first I attended was the 1993 convention in Valley Forge; I'll be attending this year's convention in Anaheim and presenting a couple clinics this year too).

I don't think there are any database interfaces on WP that are available to editors. I've thought such an interface would be handy in updating the various pages within Category:Rail transport timelines, but such access doesn't seem likely to be made available any time soon. Disaster! You have forked - we already have List of North American named passenger trains (0-C) and several other articles. You need to tidy up quickly.

When I first began using Wiki to research named trains, I saw that the list of passenger trains was difficult to use. I spent over two days redoing the pages in my sandbox and asked the proper procedure for making this big change. I have hopes of involving railfan clubs and improving the content.

The only replies I got complimented me on the quality of my work and suggested that I should copy/paste over the old pages... but the Wiki guidelines said not to do this.

Effected pages are:

• List of named passenger trains (old)
• List of North American named passenger trains (0-C)
• List of North American named passenger trains (D-H)
• List of North American named passenger trains (I-M)
• List of North American named passenger trains (N-Z)

You should find it all fixed now. Point me to the guideline that says do not copy&paste - it may need clarifying. OK if you are simply renaming an article then you must not copy&paste, you must move. But clearly if you are splitting a long article then it is unavoidable that you will have to copy&paste part of it. Thus List of North American named passenger trains (0-C) has been moved to (A-B) and we have copy&pasted to create List of North American named passenger trains (C).

I am perfectly happy with titles of "Named trains: ..." for other regions/countries. But no doubt someone even more pedantic than me will come along and move them to "List of ... named passenger trains". -- RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 07:17, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
