Steven A. Hickham Jr. (born September 21, 1989) is an American racing driver. He's won many races from oval tracks to road courses all around North America. More recently, he has attracted widespread praise for his performance in Grand-Am.
Biography
Early Years Steven Hickham Jr. was born in Corpus Christi Texas. His father (Steve) was the person that really tried to get him introduced into the racing world, but his drive came from his mother (Rosharon). Racing had been in her blood for generations, including her own life. When Steven was seven years old he started racing quarter midgets and had great success showing that he was bred to race by winning his first race.
He grew up on a ranch just outside of the town he was born in for most of his childhood. This was where he learned his true love for the open country. At the age of 11 Steven's rancher talent became known to the world as he placed number 2 in the Bee County Livestock Show with one of his steers (Sir. Loin). His love for ranching would excel to climax with a 3rd place at one of the world's toughest rodeos, The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in bull riding in 2005.
At the start of his sophomore year in High School Steven moved to a island town (Port Aransas, Texas) to focus more on his career in racing. This is where his life would change forever. No more ranch, no more livestock, no more hunting, it was all a new world for him. Later that year Steven's career in racing had succeeded to a level that he had dreamed of his whole life. On Friday, March 17, 2006 at the first round of the Star Pro Formula Mazda race from Sebring Florida, Steven would make his first race start as a professional race driver, in which he would finish in 12th, having ran in the top 5 for part of the race. Steven would later say in an interview later that day, "I am very happy with my finish. At the start of the race I was so nervous that I told my crew chief that I wasn't ready for it yet and I could not keep a steady foot on the gas, but when I came out of turn one I was in 4th, and until I reached turn 7 I still didn't think it was real." and ending it with, "I owe it all to my family, friends, crew, and my girlfriend Megan for standing next to me threw all of this." As Steven's first season would progress Lady Luck was not on his side, causing him to finish 25th in the points with a best finish of 10th at Road America.
As it would come to be, the next year would be his proving year to his father, and primary sponsor that he really wanted to make racing his life. He took a step back into a formula ford and traveled all over the continent racing, setting 5 track records along the way. He would make a showing at the 2007 SCCA Runoffs showing to be a true contender only to suffer from a mishaps in turn one of the first lap. But the next weekend he was back in the pro mazda at Laguna Seca to show that what he had learned in the past year, to have a fanatic showing and finish 8th behind his teammate Marco DiLeo. All thought that he would be a true contender for the 2008 season but his father decided to make the move to endurance racing.
The Big Jump The Hickham family would make a move from the open wheel world that they had been around all their days to the world of full body cars. This move was a big obstacle for Steven to have to overcome, the cars had a whole new feel to them and he had lost a great crew chief and friend (Josh Hough) in the process. Steven and his co-driver, father, had a very tough first year learning the new cars and adapting to the the new style of racing.
They are still competing with each other as a father/son race team and tend to do so for many years to come.
