IPA

edit

Hi Lazarus!

Thanks for adding the IPA to so many articles. When you do that, could you use the IPA conventions you sometimes link to? The templates {{pron-en}} and {{IPA-en}} (for English only) force the browser to use an IPA-compatible font (generally required for IE users, since IE isn't IPA compatible by default) and link to our English IPA key at Wikipedia talk:IPA for English‎. (There's also {{IPA-it}} etc. for some other languages.)

Basically, the idea is to use a dialect-neutral (diaphonemic) transcription, which effectively is just rhotic England English. (RP vowels but retaining /r/ before C and the horse-hoarse distinction; also transcribing long o as <oʊ> rather than <əʊ> per consensus when developing the key.)

We also distinguish high and rounded schwas (ə, ɵ, ɪ, ʊ) and don't transcribe secondary stress when it isn't actually stress (there's no such thing as a primary-secondary stress pattern in English; that's just a convention in some dictionaries for an unreduced vowel).
