Spharagemon collare

edit

Spharagemon collare seems a good article for a new editor! (I don't know much about grasshoppers, but it seemed very readable and clear to me, and also well-sourced.) I've been through it making some style changes (not content) to fit how Wikipedia pages are normally presented. Some points:

  • Don't repeat the same reference. The first time you use it, give it a name, like this <ref name="SOMENAME">...</ref>. Then you just put <ref name="SOMENAME"/> afterwards. (Don't forget the "/" which I often do!)
  • External links are not used for references. You need to include the URL in the reference somehow. I've used the "cite" templates, which may be a bit tricky for beginners, but can be used as an example and copied.
  • Titles of sections, subsections, etc. are always in "sentence case", i.e. only the first word is capitalized (except for proper names).
  • Names of genera and species should always be in italics.
  • References are put after punctuation such as commas or periods.
  • Don't use 'smart quotes'; stick to plain single (') and double (") quotes.

One issue which gets debated a lot is whether to use capitals for the common names of species. See WP:Manual_of_Style_(capital_letters)#Animals.2C_plants.2C_and_other_organisms. The usual style except for birds seems to be not to use capitals, so "Mottled Sand Grasshopper" should be changed to "mottled sand grasshopper". I haven't done this, because I don't know what the normal practice is for this group of animals. However, the article should be consistent and at present I notice tha the plant names you've included have lower case letters.
I've sorted out the references/external links; I hope I've done it correctly. Two problems remain:

  • The references currently numbered 2 and 7 seem to me to be the same. If so, you should use only one of them.
  • The image you wanted to use doesn't seem to have been uploaded.

Do stay and do more editing! Peter coxhead (talk) 09:30, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The syntax for an image inside a taxobox is just the name of the file, you don't put the square brackets or "File:". The image you're trying to use doesn't seem to have been uploaded to Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons. Peter coxhead (talk) 18:14, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Phytalmia mouldsi male.tif

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Phytalmia mouldsi male.tif. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 20:08, 28 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Good job!

edit

Might I say a good job on your taxonomic articles. I hope to see you continue making such articles in the future and don't worry, you will get the hang of the Wikipedia related formatting/editing in the future. Note if you have a particular interest in insects do check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Insects Kind regards.Calaka (talk) 05:21, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Phytalmia mouldsi

edit

I have somewhat improved the format of the references. Pls note also that external links that require a loginname or a subscription are useless since the reader cannot access the web-page you want to link to. Regards. 94.226.158.9 (talk) 14:54, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

To be clear, you should not give a 'web reference' – a reference which is only on the web – which requires a login or subscription. However, you can add a link to a source which is also available on paper. For example, for many journal articles a "DOI" or "PMID" is given which generates a web link if you use one of the citation templates. These links are useful even if a subscription is needed to access the full article as there is usually free access to the abstract. Peter coxhead (talk) 18:44, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:Phytalmia mouldsi male.tif

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Phytalmia mouldsi male.tif. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. B (talk) 13:34, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
