Welcome edit

Hello, Jonathanmallard, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Our intro page provides helpful information for new users - please check it out! If you need help, visit Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on this page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Happy editing! I'm glad you've decided to post your photos here! They look pretty well done!
So, to answer your questions, first of all, user pages work much like any other page, except you can do whatever you want to them. When you want to start your user page, just click here. The things I have on my user page are called userboxes and lists of various ones can be found here. There's userboxes for almost anything you can think of, and if there isn't, you can even make new ones yourself. Sophus Bie (talk) 08:20, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Second, yes, you can upload videos to Wikipedia, and I'm sure it would be welcome. If I remember correctly, the generally correct file type would be an .ogg. The instruction manual for uploading is here. However, you might have to wait a few days, because only autoconfirmed users can upload and that takes 4 days for everyone. After uploading, adding a video to a page is basically the same as adding an image. Sophus Bie (talk) 08:31, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Third, when you write a message you can sign it adding ~~~~ to the end. (Four tildes.) If you want to change your signature, just go to your preferences, and edit the signature field. (You'll want to check the box that says "raw signature"; that way you can use html and wiki-markup.)
Hope all this helps! Sophus Bie (talk) 08:38, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad it worked! Nice page. So, you're a pilot, an EMT, and you use Ubuntu? Cool! :D
Feel free to poke me if any other questions come up! Sophus Bie (talk) 09:15, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah okay! That makes sense! Sophus Bie (talk) 09:41, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your recent edits edit

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 09:34, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

M777 Light Towed Howitzer 1.jpg edit

Hi, this picture is superb. I am thinking about nominating it to be a featured picture. Or perhaps you would like to do it? What is needed though is a decent caption for the photo. According to the criteria:

Has a good caption The picture is displayed with a descriptive, informative and complete caption. A complete caption:

  • Is succinct.
  • Properly identifies the main subject, including Latin and technical names where applicable.
  • Describes the context of the photograph, painting, or other media. Geotagging photographs of identifiable places is encouraged. This entails providing the coordinates of where the camera was when the photo was taken, either in the article and/or on the image description page, to an appropriate degree of precision no less than ~10 km².

Do you think you would be able to write such a caption? Cheers, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:46, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've nominated the image. You can see it at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/M777. About your video, you can just upload it at Commons:Upload I think. Cheers, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:20, 21 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hey Jonathan, a question came up on this nomination Martin submitted. One person thought your work is in the public domain since you are in the military, and he changed the license tag on your image to public domain. Some of us had a different idea, that this photo is one you took for yourself with your own camera, and the copyright belongs to you. It'd be great if you could clarify if you were acting as any sort of official photographer when you took the photo, or you were just taking some shots on your own accord when you had the time.
As you may know, public domain means you give up all rights to the photo. So it's important that we not say it's in the public domain, unless it's true! I changed it back to your original Creative Commons license this evening just to be on the safe side. That's the nice thing about the wiki - if you make a mistake, it's easy to fix. Usually.  :-) Fletcher (talk) 02:26, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I am a Army Medic I was only fortunate enough to go and take some pics of these Howitzers. I shot it with my cannon digital elph.

Congratulations! edit

Re: uploading pics to wikipedia edit

Hi! I just got the message you left me on my talk page. I've been away from the Wiki for a bit due to midterm exams, and have been negligent in keeping up with my messages. Anyhow, I'll gladly upload the picture, (another nice one by the way), I just need to know what license you want to put it under. Sorry I'm so late in replying! Re: Mayor of Von Ormy TX edit

Nice photo! I would personally suggest adding it somewhere into the article for Von Ormy, Texas. The mayor in and of himself doesn't seem to fit the notability guidelines for an article of his own. Sophus Bie (talk) 04:42, 20 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
