Tool

Good job.

You're a good editor with the right idea in mind. I think you've handled the situation with Mr. Garcia extremely well. Also, thanks for your support.--Cassius987 20:37, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, you're welcome. I am glad to see you and MrHate keeping an eye on Tool and the related pages! I am just a little sad that Mike Garcia hasn't even replied to our messages and just moved our entries into an "archive" (although they were just a couple of days old). Well, whatever, let's keep our eyes open and try to keep up the good team work... --Johnnyw 15:15, 2005 Jun 14 (UTC)

Johnny, please stop reverting some edits on Tool and their upcoming release Teleincision. I have reported you about this here. I do understand why you were adding some correct information, but, actually yes the album did leak. You need to see the source below the track listing before reverting it again. -- Mike Garcia | talk 14:06, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dear Mike, please take a look at the Tool discussion! There is plenty of information regarding this subject there, showing quite easily, that this is just a hoax. The source you cite even states that it is a joke.. --Johnnyw 23:33, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

Mike Garcia

Having problems with him? So have a great many others. Contact me at my talk page if you'd like and let me know the circumstances of what's going on. You are the fourth complaint we've had about him in the past two months. Wally 20:50, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

I'm glad you directed me to that discussion page on the 10,000 days artwork. I thought it was odd when I saw no one had posted it after being out for almost a week. And it is frustrating to have it and not be able to post it for a number of reasons:

I am sorry, I seem to have missed this message and only just discovered it. Pls see my reply below. --Johnnyw 10:31, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

1. Wikipedia copyrights says: "In some cases, fair use guidelines may allow a photograph to be used." I think this is most definetly one of those cases as per the 4 factor balancing test of the fair use doctrine of US Copyright Law.

2. As per Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not : "Its primary method of finding consensus is discussion, not voting. In difficult cases, straw polls may be conducted to help determine consensus, but are to be used with caution and not to be treated as binding votes." I'm new to editing on Wikipedia so I haven't been around to engage in the discussions on 10,000 days (Talk:10,000 Days)and the art work issue but just for the record, I don't agree with move to call a "straw poll" or agree with the concensus thereof.

3. You're a good editor but damn man! You're also a self proclaimed anarchist. What are you afraid of by posting the art? I don't think Volcano or Tool will care if Wikipedia posts publicity art work and who cares if they do? No $$$ is being made off of the posting and if anything, it's such a bad ass piece of art by Alex Grey that it can only help sales. Besides, whether it's the cover or jacket art, whether it even gets published, it's still officially apart of the history of 10,000 Days or WTF ever it's going to be named.

But seriously, thanks again for bringing all of this to my attention.

Marc

I am glad if this could shed some light on part of the processes that WP is bound to. Regarding 1.: Your 100% right, including an album cover is normally not a problem at all. 2.: Of course none of us would conduct a straw poll to force a decision on others. The poll was needed since the page was being reverted up to 12 times a day! If we wanted to keep the page stable, we would have to be able to find consesus on this issue. But beware, Marc! I believe the discussion has been reopened again, see Talk:10,000 Days#Artwork Issue Revisited. To be honest, I myself changed my stand on this issue only 24h after the vote was over. Maybe we will see the image included pretty soon after all. Regarding 3.: I sadly have to disregard my own personal opinion about copyrights, since Wikipedia is not an experiment in anarchy and WP conforms with international and US law. In this case, I abide by these restraints in exchange with something good and useful - free knowledge. --Johnnyw 10:31, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Parabola (song)

Johnnyw, since you seem to be the guy to go to with all things Tool, I want you to take a look at what I have done to the Parabola page. I want to eventually move it to Parabola (song), so that we can have a page for the single, as we should. What do you think? King Bee 19:11, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Hehe thanks, I take that as a compliment. Looks nice, well done =) Should be mentioned though, that the DVD includes the music video done by Adam Jones.. with its extraordinary length, additional commentary by Jello Biafra it really is kinda extraordinary. To begin moving the entry, just add {{moveto|Parabola (song)}} to Talk:Parabola (DVD). Keep up the nice work! Btw. you are currently living in Iowa? I have spent there one year as an exchange student in 98 near Burlington! What a year that was... I remember they were looking for a new state slogan, the only candidate I remember is: "eat corn or die!" --Johnnyw 21:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
I am currently living in Iowa; I hate it about as much as you can possibly imagine. Probably because that state slogan is about right. =) Thanks for the advice on "Parabola." I'll try to take care of that in the next day or so. King Bee 04:18, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Actually, doesn't this count as an "unobstructed, uncontroversial move?" In this case, I am told that I should do it myself and not go through the normal protocol. King Bee 12:58, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
Not trying to spam your talk page or anything (sorry!) but I decided to be bold and moved it myself. King Bee 13:42, 30 May 2006 (UTC)
I am short on time: Excellent, I guess you're right =) I'll look into it again soon. Best wishes.. --Johnnyw 16:42, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

The Pot

Hey, Johnnyw. It's me again. We have a page now for The Pot, so I added it to the Toolband template, since it is a popular single these days. Do you have any other info on this single, so that we can try to flesh out this new page? It's pretty skeletal right now. --King Bee 16:16, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Am quite busy these days, but I will look into it before I go on vacation early September! =) Cya, Johnnyw talk 19:25, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Sweet. Have a great vacation! --King Bee 20:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

I tried to find some more info, but all I could find is a lot of speculation. I recalled the July newsletter, where Blake announce that the music video is almost finished... Speaking of speculation, we should remove all uncited parts from the article... If ppl want to find out about any easter eggs in that song they will have to scour the net or find out for themselves ;) --Johnnyw talk 15:43, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Ann Coulter

As Ann Coulter is already listed in the main body of the section on FahrenHYPE 9/11, I removed her name from the list of "additional" characters.

Thanks for correcting my mistake, anonymous user. Johnnyw
Sorry; that was me. The tildes were as yet unknown. :) Wangoed 17:57, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Bundesland-level categories

Hello! I see you are listed in Category:Wikipedians in Germany. I have made subcategories for each Bundesland in case you would like to add yourself to the appropriate one. See Category:Wikipedians in Germany for a list of the subcategories (they use the English names, the same as their Wikipedia articles). --Angr (tɔk) 16:01, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Illmatic a genre-creator?

I appreciate your editing, however, I would like to know why you [1] moved illmatic to the genre creating section] I know that it recieved critical acclaim and everything, and I acknowledge the fact that it has a significant place in hip hop history (even though I think its slightly overrated), but in no way did it create a sub-genre within hip hop music (unlike the chronic, Paid in full or 3 feet and rising). It sold poorly on the charts (didn't go plat. until 2001) and any cultural effects or influence it had was largely confined to the East Coast. All it did really was slightly alter the way New York rappers rhymed (and this was a trend that only lasted for a span of no more three years). THAT'S IT! I respect the album's place in hip hop history and what not, but I do not want people to get the wrong impression about this album and overstate its effects. I don't want people to confuse factual information with "accepted propaghanda"....... --Eth3red 22:02, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I am sorry if Illmatic seems a little overexposed now, but I read the list and according to the definition of the sub-section, there are albums supposed to be listed, that "are recognized for the creation (or codification) of entire genres or sub-genres of music. These albums have been uniquely influential within their own musical tableaux". And according to the list, Illmatic "is considered by hip-hop pundits as one of the most defining albums of East Coast hip-hop." I took the text literally and since I am not an expert on the subject of Hip-Hop, this might have been the wrong thing to do.. --Johnnyw 12:18, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I agree, that Illmatic's cutlural influence was regional (restricted to North-East Coast) but in a way it did redefine the East Coast Hip Hop genre. I mean, if you look at the history it changes and how MC's were rhyming before and after it, you’ll see that it brought new conventions that redefined the "East Coast" sound. It compltely altered their whole approach to rhyming and brought that smoothness to emceeing and that laid back style New Yorkers are known for today. Every east coast MC took the album home and studied and perfected its format. You have to understand that Nas captured a time in hip hop and New York history perfectly. Its like a painter getting all the brush strokes just right - timeless, giving anyone who wasn't even there the "feeling" of NYC and the projects he was rapping about--24.63.72.100 01:12, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
I disagree. Illmatic changed the way East Coast rappers rhymed, but only slightly, but not completely as you suggest it did. Nas's style had been pioneered by Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and Kool G Rap, long before he released Illmatic. What makes Illmatic relevant in hip hop history is its timing. It was released during a time where people began emphasizing slick hip hop production, and began eshcewing multi-threaded/internal rhyme lyricism in favor of other trends. Nas merely perfect, improved, and re-popularized a style that had long been in existence, but was just forgotten at that point. So how can it be a genre-setter, if the genre was already there in the first place? Besides, it sold poory in terms of commercial sales....so i doubt it was very popular or influential for that matter (even if it did recieve a lot of critical acclaim)--Eth3red 01:44, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
To Eth3red....
Firstly, all forms of musical genres have their derivatives. For instance, Britpop dates its origins to the British Invasion of the 1960s (among other influences). So should we simply disregard it you may not deem it as “original”? As for this matter, I believe that while Illmatic’s style had its origins in the prototypical work of other rappers, it was different in several ways. Yes, his lyricism and flow is reminiscent Rakim's. I think any hip hop fan will agree with that. However, by taking the best qualities of his influences, Nas was able to be bring a higher state of rhyming at a time when the surrounding music was pale in comparison (take the time to compare the lyrics of Das EFX to those featured on Illmatic). And while you may argue that its style was not innovative at the time, it was indeed instrumental in (re)popularizing the use of internal rhyme patterns accompanied with a rhythmically-complex yet smooth verbal pace (which, as you mentioned, had long been forgotten). So while most immediately compared him to Rakim for his lyricism and flow, he really took the best aspects of Rakim and was able to combine them into his music better than anyone before him (establishing a new template of rhyming in the process). And if you look at the definition of the sub-section, there are albums supposed to be listed, that "are recognized for the creation (or codification) of entire genres or sub-genres of music. These albums have been uniquely influential within their own musical tableaux". And according to the list, Illmatic "is considered by hip-hop pundits as one of the most defining albums of East Coast hip-hop." (which, it indeed is).

And lastly, we should not determine the album’s influence/impact on its commercial success. In my opinion (emphasis), a classic album (be it Jazz music or hip hop) defines it's era or at least ushers in a new one. It means that you have to have this album if you are serious about chronicling the ebb and flow of any particular genre of music. A classic album adds a different element to music. It inspires others to raise their level or change what they do to adapt to the next wave in evolution. Illmatic, even though it indeed sold poorly (took seven years to go platinum), accomplished all of this. Also, what you have to remember is that that album was released during a time when hip hop music wasn't as commercially viable as it is today. An album could affect a lot of the hip hop community in those days and not sell a lot of copies because the community was small (not to mention that bootlegging was rampant). This phenomenon isn't unique to hip hop. Rock N Roll fans agree that Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced?, released in 1967, is one of the most influential albums in the history of the genre. However, the album was not certified platinum until 1986, nearly 20 years after it's release and 16 years after Hendrix died. An even better example is the music of Velvet Underground. I've heard them ranked as high as the 6th most influential group ever in rock music history yet none of their music has been certified gold to this day. They may not have been a commercial success, but they changed the genre, influencing people like The Sex Pistols.
note: If you still wish to discuss this issue, I would rather we continue this discussion within the Illmatic article page itself than in a user's personal talk page--24.63.72.100 02:19, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Mark Lanegan

Mark Lanegan was kicked out of the band sometime after his crystal meth overdose in summer of 2005. Mark has said he will never work with Josh Homme again. Also I met Josh and he confirmed that Mark is no longer in the band. Thats why he was in the first half of the LTP tour but not the second half, or the Nine Inch Nails tour. Including the few shows Queens have played this year. Mark Lanegan is gone. Sad fact I know.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cessik (talkcontribs) .

Sad news. I read that Mark had health issues, that he was badly in need for treatment. I did not know that he and Josh split though. =( We might need a 3rd party source nevertheless... --Johnnyw 12:18, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Avoid double files

Please use the same file space uploading a native recording of a sound file. There's no point in keeping two versions. Just overwrite the old file by using the same file name.

And mind the format. It's xx-filename.ogg not XX_filename.ogg.

Berlin burial

Please can you tell me how to find the burial place in Berlin of John Arbuthnott, 8th Viscount of Arbuthnott ? - Kittybrewster 09:14, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

I am sorry, I can't seem to be of any assistance. Locating a grave of that age of person hardly known in Germany is probably quite difficult. One link I can provide though. The administration of Berlin provides a quick guide on how to look for a certain grave - there is no single file containing all the data though. One has to limit the search to a certain district of Berlin and then ask the corresponding district administrations and/or - if it was a confessional burial - the corresponding church. Also, be aware that an inquiry is not free of charge. link (german) Good luck and best wishes --Johnnyw talk 21:31, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Hey Johnnyw. Do you use any desktop applications to access Wikipedia, or do you do everything through the web page? It's a pain to leave the browser open all the time. Wikidan829 17:22, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

I have been searching for a good desktop app for a while, but haven't found one. If you find one, I'd be interested to know, but afaik there aren't any.. Nevertheless, it got a lot easier with Firefox supporting resuming crashed sessions, restoring closed tabs, bookmarking of tab groups than it was some years ago.. Coheed and Cambria

Hey Johnnyw. I noticed you removed the Last.fm link from Coheed and Cambria. Could we discuss why you did this? I am unfamiliar with many rules as to what links may or may not be put on an article. Thanks, - Jackm (Talk - Contributions) 11:09, 6 June 2007

Hi Jackm, of course, you deserve an explanation. See: WP:EL where it says under "Links normally to be avoided: Links to social networking sites (such as MySpace) [...]". Remember that this is an encyclopedia. Why would you want to include Last.fm? Normally everything that is linked under External links should be integrated into the article and used as a source, the only exceptions are official sites of the article subjects, sites that provide e.g. a copy of the work that the article discusses (keeping in mind copyright issues), and things such as whole interviews/reviews etc.. I personally would consider a link to last.fm as advertising, as it is commercial and there are alternatives. Why include last.fm and not the others? .. well I hope I could explain this.. --Johnnyw talk 12:12, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I have read WP:EL and i understand why you removed it. Thanks for explaining it to me, and i will remember this in future editing. All the best. Jackrm 12:19, 6 June 2007 (UTC) (TalkContributions)
