There are a few other things that you should also keep in mind while editing here. We strive to uphold a neutral point of view. You may have noticed that I removed your edits to the SS Edmund Fitzgerald article and that I posted a detailed explanation on Talk:SS Edmund Fitzgerald already. You should take a look at WP:Conflict of interest, specifically the section linked directly at WP:SELFCITE.
As I noted on the talk page, I cleaned up the content so that it conforms to our WP:Manual of Style (which is a requirement Featured Articles must meet, and the article on the Fitz is a FA). I also reformatted the citations to match the formatting already used in the article, expanding the bare URLs into full citations linked from the footnotes. However, since you wrote both sources, it really is better if someone else restores that content into the article. You can post on Talk:SS Edmund Fitzgerald to offer suggestions and commentary at any time, and other editors will make the appropriate edits. I have concerns that the content on the Lego model is appropriate for our article. Maybe if there were another source that wasn't self-published by you then we could cite that. I do think that your journal article should be integrated into the rest of the article in some fashion, but it's located behind a paywall that I cannot access.
The content has not been deleted permanently. It exists in the article history, and this revision of the page can be accessed to read it. Perhaps other editors will restore some of that content in the future, improving upon it. Imzadi 1979  04:44, 15 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Jonah edit

Hi John, if you read the article on original research you will see that it clearly states that original research includes "any analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to reach or imply a conclusion not stated by the sources" and that the sources cited must be "directly related to the topic of the article." You are citing sources about particular fish/sharks and using them to imply a conclusion that they could be what is referred to in the book of Jonah - that is the definition of original research. In order to include the information you are wanting to, you would need a reliable source that itself states that these types of fish could be relevant to the story of Jonah, rather than using your own analysis and citing articles that do not refer to Jonah (the topic of the article) in any way, shape or form. Regards Melcous (talk) 13:21, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I reviewed the edits and Melcous is entirely correct. Editors are not permitted to build arguments, but only to report arguments that have already been published. Zerotalk 13:30, 27 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Now I get it...so, if I found an article where someone said hey, Jonah was swallowed by a whale shark...that would work better...right?

That's a step in the right direction. You also need that the theory is notable, see WP:WEIGHT, and the source is reliable, see WP:RS. In particular, it could be challenged on the basis of being a fringe opinion. In any case, since it can never be more than a theory, it has to be attributed (e.g. "According to so-and-so, ..."). How about this site? http://christiananswers.net/q-eden/edn-t004.html It says Jonah might have been swallowed by a whale shark...amid other options...not a fringe opinion (unless you think Protestants are fringe I suppose)...John R. Beck (talk) 20:21, 16 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cool and thanks edit

I think that myself and pretty well anybody that takes a close look would say that it's so cool you making that extensive model of the Fitz, and also respect your expertise and work. Besides being a bit rough-and-tumble like any online posting place, Wikipedia editing is a weird alternate universe. Long term I've probably been the lead editor at that article. Right now I'm neutral about including anything on the model. If you'd like to discuss / explore further I'd be happy to...just ping me, although I might also see a response here. But thanks for your work on both the model and efforts to add to Wikipedia. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 00:43, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
