Speedy deletion of Da-Wen Sun

edit

A tag has been placed on Da-Wen Sun requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. PoinDexta1 12:05, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Categorization of redirects

edit

There isn't an absolute ban on putting categories on redirects; however, it is generally and broadly discouraged (with certain well-defined exceptions) including in multiple places in the manual of style. In this particular case, there is no benefit to putting the same categories on both Sun Dawen and Da-Wen Sun. When properly sorted, the category entries for biographical articles are sorted first by family name, and then by personal name (separated by a comma, regardless of the order of the name elements in the name). In this case, the sort keys are therefore, "Sun, Dawen" and "Sun, Da-Wen", adjacent in most or all categories. There's no particular benefit to putting 2 adjacent entries for the same person in a category. If Dawen Sun happened to be widely known by an unrelated stage name or pen name, then there would be an argument for categorizing a redirect.

As for standards, WP:Categorization#Categorizing pages says "most redirects are not categorized, though there are exceptions". WP:CAT-R says: "Most redirects should not be categorized. Examples include misspellings, minor variations of article titles, obscure alternate titles, and abbreviations." (My bolding added.) Studerby (talk) 18:32, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
