Milk and cookies

[midnight comet] [talk] has given you a cookies and milk! Cookies and milk promote WikiLove and hopefully this one has made your day better. Spread the WikiLove by giving someone else cookies and milk, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend. Happy munching!

Spread the goodness of cookies by adding {{subst:Cookie}} or {{subst:Glass of milk}} to someone's talk page with a friendly message.

Have you considered creating an account? Javért  |  Talk 06:52, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't now how to source...

The information exists concerning the Curtis article. Google it and it has been a problem in Jamie Lee Curtis's life. Could perhaps site it for me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.159.230.55 (talkcontribs)

Yeah, I've done so. I apologise if my comment seemed crass or rude. However, I don't really think it belongs in the first paragraph, as it is mentioned later on in the article. But as long as it is sourced, I suppose it is okay. Regards, Javért  |  Talk 06:48, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
Not to be overly critical, but it seems odd to me that you didn't call this anon out for inserting the completely unsourced claim that she was a heroin addict, which I've just removed. That's a far cry from the post-surgical morphine dependency she acknowledge in the relevant cited articles, unless I've missed something. Hullaballoo Wolfowitz (talk) 00:37, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I totally misread that. It's me that missed something. Thank you for catching my error. Apologies. Javért  |  Talk 00:44, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Welcome to Did you know...

Hello! I noticed that you've been reviewing a lot of nominations at the DYK suggestions page. Thank you for your help, and I hope you will continue to contribute! As you know, you don't need to be an administrator to review hooks or to move hooks to Preparation area, so your help is more than welcome.

You may already be familiar with the DYK rules by now, but in case you aren't, you can check out the official rules and the Additional Rules. You may also want to look into some useful tools that can allow you to review nominations more quickly: the Cut & Paste character counter is a helpful JavaScript to calculate the length of hooks, and DYKcheck is a script you can install on your own Wikipedia account for more heavy-duty verifying.

The best way to learn is by doing, but here is also a quick reference of the things to check for each hook you review:

Thanks again for your help! I look forward to continuing to work with you at DYK, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me or anyone else at DYK. Now get to reviewing some noms! Dylan620 (contribs, logs)help us! 12:48, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Message me regarding: "Looking for a new challenge. :)" There is so much to do, working on rescuing articles is only one facet. Building up membership, tagging articles for deletion, newsletter 2, technical issues, creating awards, etc.

Here to help articles tagged for rescue!

Hi, Javert, welcome to the Article Rescue Squadron! We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying and rescuing articles that have been tagged for deletion. Every day hundreds of articles are deleted, many rightfully so. But many concern notable subjects and are poorly written, ergo fixable and should not be deleted. We try to help these articles quickly improve and address the concerns of why they are proposed for deletion. This covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again - Welcome! Ikip (talk) 14:49, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Hehe, thank you for the kind welcome. Please let me know how I can help in regards to the different facets of ARS. While rescuing articles is the main reason I joined, I'm also interested in working on the newsletter, building membership and working on awards. Let me know. Regards, Javért  |  Talk 22:12, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, that is wonderful.
We need to add content to WP:ARSN the newsletter.
Look at the first newsletter for ideas, and be bold.
  1. If you have any ideas of new features, let me know.
  2. I was thinking of an inclusionist/deletionist debate between two prominent editors. We already have a featured editor we interviewed. Maybe you can interview a brand spanking new newbie editor, to include in the newsletter.
  3. User_talk:Benjiboi said he would do a motto contest for ARS, announced in the newsletter. Asking him about this, or maybe let him know you started it and run with it on the newsletter page, since Ben seems distracted lately.
  4. User:A Nobody wanted to do a rescue contest, announced in the newsletter. Based on Wikipedia:Article rescue contest, the first one, for the discussion, see Wikipedia_talk:Article_Rescue_Squadron#Contest_2.3F open the hidden section up.
Building membership: I go through AfDs and see if editors who keep are members already, it is okay if you invite someone who already is a member. Whenever you feel it is appropriate, add {{subst:WP:ARSI}} to an editors page. We have a shortage of admins, and veteran editors, so if you have any in mind, give them the template. If you have any ideas how to recruit, let me or the ARS know.
Awards: we have editor number 300 coming up quickly, and it would be great if there to be an award for this member. Look at existing templates on the main page for inspiration.
BE BOLD. let me know if you have any ideas.
thanks for your interest. Let me know if any of this interests you. Ikip (talk) 05:56, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Let me thoroughly read over everything that you've provided and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I'm a college student so my time during the week (M-Th) is very limited, so I don't want to bite off too much. All that you have suggested so far seems interesting, but after researching everything I'll pick the two things that I think that I can help the most with and dive full force into that. Again, thanks for the kind welcome and information. :) Regards, Javért  |  Talk 06:02, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

LOL, I thought you were a newb, and I dont have any idea why. And here you are an admin:

"This user continues to edit, despite your block"

Well now I am embarrassed :) But happy to, as I wrote above, we need more editors like you. Welcome aboard, once again. Ikip (talk) 06:03, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Ha, actually, that was a misunderstanding. :) I'm not an admin, I've only been around for ~ 4.5 months. :) Javért  |  Talk 06:04, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

This user continues to edit, despite your block (not sure how he's doing that). Anything you can do about it? Frmatt (talk) 04:01, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Corotoman

Javert, I just authored a start article for Corotoman, a colonial plantation in Virginia. What could I do to make it more worthy of the Did you know? honor? Thanks! --Caponer (talk) 04:35, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Let me read the article and then review your hooks and I'll get back with you in a few minutes. :) Regards, Javért  |  Talk 04:37, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
You're the best, Javert! I look forward to receiving your thoughts and suggestions! --Caponer (talk) 04:44, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
First of all, the article is quite interesting and everything checks out fine for DYK (length, date, etc.). However, neither hook is very eye catching. The first one is the better of the two, but still doesn't really *grab* the reader. How about something along the lines of "Did you know...that in 1729, when his plantation Corotoman was destroyed, Robert Carter I lamented in his diary about the total destruction of his wine cellar?" To me, that's a tad catchier as you wonder, "why wasn't he upset about the plantation?" What are your thoughts? Javért  |  Talk 04:47, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Javert, thank you for taking the time to read and comment on the article. Your suggestion for the hook reads terrificly and I had actually thought about using that fact, but was working on the wording. You absolutely nailed it. Thank you again for all your contributions to Wikipedia! --Caponer (talk) 04:53, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Aw, thank you for your kind words. :) I made pretty much the same comment at the article's nomination at T:TDYK, if you'd like to make a comment there also. Regards, Javért  |  Talk 04:56, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

igloo

Hi Javert, and thanks for your interest in igloo. Before using the program, please read the following information carefully - failure to do so may result in your test access being revoked.

igloo is a JavaScript-powered, browser-based anti-vandalism tool, which means you do not have to download or install anything on your computer and it will work on multiple operating systems. However, it does mean that the performance relies on that of your browser and it may operate more slowly than downloaded programs. You must have either Mozilla Firefox 3+ or Google Chrome to use igloo, as it is currently incompatible with other browsers.

igloo relies on a system called iglooNet to assist you in finding and reverting vandalism. It is this system that transforms the program from a pretty version of recent changes to an actual anti-vandalism tool. Naturally, this is beyond the power of a client-side program, and igloo will regularly communicate with an external, non-Wikimedia server. Because of things like server logs, and the iglooNet abuse tracker, this may allow your IP address to be attached to your username - something which is otherwise impossible on Wikipedia. If you do not want this to happen, you MUST NOT USE IGLOO.

If you decide that you do want to test igloo, please keep in mind that it not wholly stable, and you may experience problems where it performs an invalid edit, or other unwanted action. If this happens, fix any mistakes you've made, apologise to anyone you've offended, and let me know. I don't take any responsibility for your use of the program - if you aren't willing to fix any errors, don't use it.

igloo is already quite powerful. The following is a simple guide to using the program:

  • The igloo interface is similar to that of other software, including huggle. Recent changes appear on the left, and diffs appear on the right.
  • igloo sorts diffs based on iglooNet data so that edits most likely to be vandalism are displayed first. You can press spacebar to view the top diff, or click on any diff to view it directly.
  • When you find vandalism, press 'Q' or click the revert button to revert the change, and issue a warning to the user. igloo automatically issues the correct warning. It will ignore existing warnings that are more than 5 days old, and restart from the beginning.
  • The iglooNet assertion system tags clean and dirty edits with colour coding - if it suspects an edit is vandalism, it will be flagged as red, and if it believes it to be clean, it will tag it green.
  • At any time, you can re-review diffs you have already seen by pressing backspace to move through the diff history.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or other feedback, I'd love to know. If you hate it, and won't be using it again, please let me know why - and I'll remove you from the test whitelist. If you now try and use igloo, you should find that it will allow you to use the program. Thanks, and good luck! Ale_Jrbtalk 09:02, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I agree. :) How's your machine working out? Making it easier for you to get rest, I hope. Yeah, I've been trying to use most of my spare time on Wikipedia. Went Huggle crazy today.. ;). Also, I've been trying to branch out into new areas and such. I'm not sure if I congratulated you on your GA yet, but if not, congrats. :) I'm not sure that I'm a good enough writer to ever get an article to that status, so I'm fairly envious. Thanks for the GA kudos, but I really only nominated it and did some cleanup. The REAL kudos should go to all the editors who helped develop it. My machine is working well, but it will take some time to recover my sleep debt. I kind of look like Darth Vader with it on. :-) Glad to see you branching into new areas, being bold. There's so much to do around here, and getting stuck on just one thing can become boring after a while. Anyway, take care. Yours, The V-Man (Said · Done) 19:07, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Agreed. I've really enjoyed working at DYK, there's so many neat articles that come through there. I'm going to start with ARS pretty soon as well as continuing to clerk at CHU/USURP (probably my favorite thing to do around here). :) Glad to hear you're doing well, Lord Vader. :p --Javért 20:25, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Unable to edit

Can you tell me why I cant edit now after 4 days and 10 edits? I cant edit semi-protect pages, are you or an admin can help out? Is it cause of filter log? Vazgen4 (talk) 20:16, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Are you editing through a Tor network? If so you are subjected to stricter autoconfirmed thresholds: 90 days and 100 edits. Any admin can, at their discretion, grant you confirmed status which works just the same as autoconfirmed. You can make a request at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions. Regards, Javért  |  Talk 20:23, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Im not using Tor Network. Its a regular connection. It should be working, I dont have any blocks or anything. Vazgen4 (talk) 20:32, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Javert, I was surprised to get such an early response from some wikipedian. I am still unsure of using the Wkipedia to it's fullest but I am getting there. Thanks for your support. Keep Talking. In near future I may have some surprises for you. Nice Day Asmit Rathod (talk)

Be sure and read those links that I gave you, as they're pretty helpful. If you have any questions about anything, or feel that I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to leave me a message. If I don't know the answer, I'm sure one of my talk page watchers does. :) Regards, Javért 20:17, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Pro alcohol POV IP back

68.116.43.92 (talkcontribsinfoWHOIS)

Hi, you helped with some rollbacks on this person's spamming that I reported at ANI. The IP is back, and perhaps being a bit more subtle, but I think his/her additions continue to be inappropriate. I've just been rolling stuff back without warnings. I guess I should start warning and report at AIV, but I need to run now. Can you give a second opinion on his/her behavior? Thanks! Katr67 (talk) 23:47, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, just checking his latest few contribs it isn't as bad as last time. It's turning into more of a content dispute than vandalism (I agree that his edits are still POV, but now it's more than just simple vandalism), tho, perhaps attempting to open up a dialogue with him would be a good idea. Regards, Javért 23:52, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Seeking Help

Hi Javert: I am trying to create a page on a Finance Professor whose research has influenced me .He has held/holds really high level academic positions equivalent of Dean/Head/President/ViceChancellor/Director. He fits the Criteria # 6 of Notability in Academics. The title of page is S P PARASHAR. Even after putting around 50 genuine references and 8 external links it keeps showing that – (This article may not meet the notability guideline for academics. Please help to establish notability by adding reliable, secondary sources about the topic. If notability cannot be established, the article is likely to be merged or deleted.)

My response in the discussion of the article is This Person meets the Notability in Academics Criteria # 6: Person holds or has held Major Highest Level Elected or Appointed Academic Post at an academic institution: Dr Parashar was appointed Director Highest Level Academic Post at Indian Institute of Management Indore, Top level Business School giving MBA in India. This News was posted by National Newspaper Times of India. See link: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/587457.cms - Title of the News: Parashar to be IIM Indore's new full time director. Other links confirming the fact he was appointed and worked at Highest Academic Post in Academic Institution: http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-Contributor,a=P/view-Contact-Page,id=18355 AND http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-3532603,flstry-1.cms.

Please Guide I will really appreciate your help. Thank you – ariesindus Ariesindus (talk) 01:20, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Man, you get all the requests. I demand a recount! Abce2|This isnot a test 03:35, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
I apologise that it took me so long to get back to you, but I haven't had much free time lately due to exams and homework. Anyway, it seems the page has been deleted since you posted this question to my talk. However, since it was deleted per your request, you can have it restored to your user space and then I can see if I can help you with it, if you're interested. Sound good? Regards, Javért 21:10, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
