British people edit

Further to your edit on the above article, there have been at least three edit sumaries referring to the talk page - which is explanation of why the edits were being removed - for now. It is about consensus and discussion of any changes made to the infobox images on the articles talk page where there has been considerable debate about who should and who should not be included over many months. It is also about style, as the way it is now formatted looks with respect, a mess. I have already suggested that the infobox images should contain someone such as Samuel Coleridge-Taylor would be a good idea. Rather than simpy reverting please discuss it on the talk page where I have already suggested STC could be added and one other user has suggested that maybe Naomi Campbell be added. Thank you. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 18:07, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

With regard to your message on the above talk page no offence taken, you are right my message is relevant to there. The good thing about all of this is that the ip users edits perhaps this will (at last) mean a Black Briton is included in the infobox which I believe should be there. Thanks and have fun. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 20:19, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Optimizing relief edit

Hi Jane, I've moved the above page to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Optimizing relief, making it a subpage of the Graphics Lab. As it is a tutorial, it really shouldn't be in mainspace. Thank you for the hard work, and please keep it up! Best wishes, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 20:46, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that, I was going to contact someone at Graphic Lab to find out where you wanted it! JaneVannin (talk) 12:47, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello.
Glad to see that you translated this tutorial by your own as we, at the French-speaking Graphic Lab, were looking for translators. Good job! I just made some very little corrections.
If you want you can find more tutorials here, a page that works like a mini-portal with tightly linked tutorials I wrote. There are three main tutorials (for three different types of maps), three complementary (the one you translated is part of these), plus an additional page for specific geo-referenced data sources. Note that I still have to finish the redaction of two of them (in fact, to re-write them completely) so those links are still red.
Greetings. Sting-fr (talk) 13:50, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sting Will try to get round to the other tutorials - as a long article it was quite a lot of work, so I'm going to try to do some shorter ones next! But I think that the tutorials look like useful resources so will try to do them as a priority. JaneVannin (talk) 12:47, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Jane.
Sting-fr (talk) 21:10, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Confusion edit

Hi Jane,

I believe the problem might stem from the proofreading section being inside html comments in the example template. Any text between <!-- and --> doesn't get processed. Here is an example, just paste it into the template after the sample (changing the info to your relevant situation, of course)...

|Proofreader-s = Vrac|
|Proofreading_progress = 100|

Re: Help with image request? edit

Hi JaneVannin!

Sure I'd be glad to help. I'm not too hot with image licencing myself either, but I'd be more than willing to get a shot of Kelly Holmes into the mix here (I'd love something like (http://www.britsattheirbest.com/images/ss_holmes_400w.jpg this], with the flag!). If you'd like to e-mail me with your conversation (go to my talk page and on the left hand side console - under the Wikipedia globe - you should see the "E-mail this user" function), I'd be happy to add my voice. I have secured images from Flickr in the past that would've otherwise been unacceptable by way of outlining that Wikipedia is the 6th most visited website on the net, that the photographer will be credited as the author, and that no profeit will be made by anyone at WP. --Jza84 |  Talk  11:16, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Jane ! edit

Yug (talk) 21:24, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Too kind edit

Thanks for your comments; methinks you are too kind! Anyway, I have added a comment on the UKIP talk page. Don't know if you're deeply interested in UKIP or not, but if so have you seem Richard Corbett MEP's booklet on them? It's called "25 Things You Didn't Know When You Voted For UKIP" and contains very well-sourced details. Emeraude (talk) 15:50, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that. I've just read the thing from Richard Corbett. Very interesting. Quite a lot in there which should be made public knowledge. UKIP are far too close to the likes of the BNP for me. And, anyway, I like being a European! JaneVannin (talk) 20:16, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Artologik TIME edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Artologik TIME, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Non-notable software product. First 60 ghits all appear to be download options.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. CultureDrone (talk) 11:35, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Well basically, Wikipedia is not intended as a list of all software programs that have been created (nor all musical groups, episodes of television shows etc. - despite some appearances to the contrary !) Wikipedia requires articles to prove some sort of notability about the subject - the main guidelines on notability can be found by clicking here, so you therefore need to indicate why this particular piece of software is notable and, unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything out about the product which indicated to me that this was the case, which is why I flagged it for potential deletion. Even more unfortunately, unlike some other subjects, there isn't (currently) a specific page anywhere that I can point you at which gives you a list of 'things which make software notable' (though it has been attempted in the past). If it's the first to use some new whizzy technology, or has been widely covered in the news, or is the market leader in its field, then it's got a good chance of being notable (but not a certainty).
You also need to be able to prove any assertations you make (verifiability) - details can be found by clicking here - so if you;re going to say the product is the market leader, you need to be able to provide references (not directly connected with the product itself) which can prove this.
Finally, the fact that there are articles about similar things is an argument often put forwards, but is irrelevant for notability considerations - you can ready why by clicking here.
  • I hope this has helped - feel free to drop me a message if you want to discuss anything :-) CultureDrone (talk) 15:14, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Artologik TIME edit

I have nominated Artologik TIME, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Artologik TIME. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. CultureDrone (talk) 11:11, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well, it makes a change not to be screamed at for nominating someone's article for deletion :-) I honestly have no problem with an article existing about the product if it can meet Wikipedia's notability criteria. I agree totally that much of the other software doesn't seem to meet notability criteria either - and I'll probably be looking at them in the near future - that's the problem with 2.75 million articles and only so many editors ! :-) CultureDrone (talk) 16:16, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tutoriels de Topo-Cartographie edit

Salut Jane, Je viens de repasser sur User:JaneVannin/translations, il me semble que le travail a beaucoup avancé ! (depuis l'année dernière :] ) C'est Great!!

Yug (talk) 15:13, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Topographical map tutorial edit

Hi Jane. Good work on translating the map tutorials.

I've been trying to create a topographical map, so I've been using your translated guide, along with the original French version.

I decided before I do my map to do the Falkland Islands so I could follow the tutorial to the letter; however, I keep getting stuck at step 47:

Export the bitmap map: go into File -> Export raster map -> PNG. In the exportation module window, click on the button in the field Raster file to be converted: and select your map. In the field Name for new PNG file, replace <rasterfilename> with < View_topo_GRASS > then click Run. Your image will be stored by default in the root folder of the program: C:\GRASS. Keep the module open.

My Output - GIS.m never finishes "converting DEM_Falklands_UTM@PERMANENT..."

I've tried restarting the project, and I've even reinstalled GRASS, but it gets stuck at this point. The software doesn't freeze, it just never completes it, not even after leaving the computer alone for two hours.

Is this a necessary step or can it be bypassed? Matthewedwards :  Chat  01:29, 24 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Request for opinion edit

Hi JaneVannin: Sorry to trouble you, but I could not help but notice your expression of affection for TOS on the Wikipedians who like Star Trek: The Original Series page, and so I would be curious of your thoughts on the notability of a Star Trek author for whom I just created a Wikipedia article -- which may be promptly destined for the trash pile. As a newcomer here at Wikipedia, my first article attempt was indeed recommended for deletion within hours of its creation by a senior user named JzG who seems to me to be overly hostile and dismissive of Star Trek, calling it fancruft (= trivial, obscure, of importance to just a tiny group of fanatics) . Since you are a Trek fan, if it is also your good faith opinion that my subject is in no way deserving of an article on this site; and you could let me know, I would feel much more comfortable with the justice of the pending deletion action. My proposed article may be seen here, assuming you visit the page soon enough ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Gurian Kind Regards. Tosresearcher (talk) 05:50, 7 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
