Managing a conflict of interest

Hello, James Wesley, Rawles. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article James Wesley Rawles, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. Hi James, just want to note that I posted the above notice out of an abundance of caution. There's nothing that says you can't edit your own articles as long as your edits aren't biased, and I do not see anything wrong with your edits - so feel free to carry on as before, it's just standard to let people know the "conflict of interest" policies when they edit articles where they may have a COI. Thanks for uploading File:Photo of James Wesely, Rawles.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing this form, or you may simply create a new account for editing. usernames which imply the editor is a specific identifiable person, such as James Wesley Rawles, are not really allowed per WP:IMPERSONATE, except in the case when the name is your real name. Even in such cases, however, the account may be temporarily blocked as a precaution to pervent any damaging impersonation. That is my name, with the correct comma. If you look at the covers and title pages of any of my books, you will see the same comma. The title of the Wikipedia bio page was originally and correctly "James Wesley, Rawles", but some Wiki Editor later incorrectly changed it. 98.97.32.49 (talk) 13:54, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

The above notification was posted more than five years ago and it's not clear why you're responding to it now. Anyway, the issue with your username has (had) nothing to do with a comma being used. It, however, has (had) everything to do with the fact that you're (apparently) using your real name as your username and there also (apparently) is a Wikipedia article written about you under that same name. You can use your real name as your username (as explained here), but in some cases such an account may be soft-blocked as a prevention against possible damaging impersonation. Since more than five years have passed since the notification was posted and since you haven't been using this account to edit Wikipedia during that time, nothing more needed to be done and your account was just left alone. If, however, you plan on resuming Wikipedia editing using this account (particularly if you try to edit James Wesley Rawles or to edit/create other content related to you on Wikipedia), then that could lead to problems. If that's your intent, you might want to consider emailing the Wikimedia Volunteer Response Team ("OTRS" is the old name) and enquiring about getting your Wikipedia account verified. Having your account verified won't gain you and additional editing privileges or any form of editorial control over content written about you on Wikipedia (you're going to still be expected to follow Wikipedia:Conflict of interest), but it will let others (reasonably) know that you are the person in control of this account and that it's not someone pretending to be you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:18, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
