John Allen Wakefield

I came across some information about John Allen Wakefield. He was the one who wrote the account about the Bad Axe Massacre having served in the Illinois militia that took part in the Black Hawk War. Born in South Carolina, he moved with his parents to Illinois. He was trained to be a physician then studied law and was admitted to the Illinois bar. Wakefield was an abolitionist and supported measures to keep Illinois a free state. He served in the Illinois House. Later he went to St. Paul, Minnesota and became the first justice of the peace. In the end he settled in Lawrence, Kansas where he took part in Bleeding Kansas. The pro-slavery Missouri Ruffians set fire to his house in Lawrence. In the 1860s-he served one term in the Kansas House.An very interesting man.I added his name to the Black Hawk War template.Thanks-RFD (talk) 18:13, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi I am working on the article making notes-I have some other things take care of. The Wakefield article is taking a little long because John Allen Wakefield was involved in several different events in 3-4 states-Many Thanks-RFD (talk) 14:28, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

I started the article a stub- about John Allen Wakefield. My apologies for taking so long.Part of the reason I needed to take care of some things.Also John Allen Wakefield was in several different states serving in 2 different state legislatures- was 1st Justice of the Peace in a city of a 3rd state. He also took part in Bleeding Kansas as well as the Black Hawk War.So I had to spent some time trying to sort his career out.Also I added Victory, Wisconsin to the Black Hawk War template.Finally many thanks for responding with in the legacy section of the Chief Black Hawk article and that hockey team.I did the same in the BlackHawk Hockey team article pertaing to Chief Black Hawk-Thanks-RFD (talk) 18:33, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Many thanks for the comments-Gratiot's Grove was mentioned in the Wisconsin Historical Society website. I don't even know if there is a historical marker there.The society did do some of field work/dig or someone did-Thanks-RFD (talk) 16:06, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Gratiots' Grove is located in Lafayette County, Wisconsin 1-3 miles south of Shullsburg.I am reading up on Gratiot's Grove. One other suggestion is that there is an article about Chief Wapello who support Chiek Keokuk in maintaining peaceful relationships with the settlers,etc. I added Wapello to the Black Hawk War template and the article could be expanded-Thanks-RFD (talk) 17:25, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

I have not read it - had the chance to look at it and read most of the chapter / section on Bad Axe. There were things it barely covered (some of the smaller incidents) but the background of the war I flipped through and the chapter on Bad Axe were well done and seemed like they would be very useful for the articles. Abe and Black Hawk

I like the Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War article - there has to be a DYK in it, perhaps something from Lincoln's own joke: DYK ...that Abraham Lincoln, who held the ranks of both private and captain in his Black Hawk War service, later joked his only "bloody struggles [were] with the mosquitoes"?
