Welcome--I'm glad you decided to get an account. You seem to know your way around, but I'll give you a barebones version of our standard welcome message. Here are the main links. Welcome page.

Image:Czh-3.JPG is great; thanks for that. Image:Crts-2.JPG is fine. Image:Crts-1.JPG has no source, and it particularly needs one because, contrary to the tag that's on there, it's not a two-dimensional work of art, it's a three-dimensional work of art (I know it seems arbitrary, but it matters). So I tagged it {{nosource}}.

Oh, sorry--just got your message as I was writing this one. There's a larger problem, though, with using fair use images in a general article on the people. All of those images would be fine in articles on the particular people in the pictures, but free images would be best for the Croats page. This is kind of unfortunate timing; we're in the middle of a fair use crackdown.

More on this later, I'm going to update some of the tags and look for some free replacements. Chick Bowen 03:58, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I found commons:Category:People of Croatia. Might be useful. All of those are public domain/free use. Chick Bowen 04:01, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mestrovic and whoever that is in the upper right hand corner--the bust by Mestrovic. Although if you can find a source for that one and it turns out to be public domain, it's no problem. I'm looking around, more in a moment. Chick Bowen 04:08, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the Mestrovic one is (being arbitrary again) not PD by a year. If the bust is GFDL, that would be perfect. Can you tell who the original uploader was? Chick Bowen 04:15, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Since you asked about other problem montages, the contributions of the person who uploaded those two contained a bunch more that are similar. Several of them are all-PD and fine--I OK'd the ones for Magyars, Dutch people, Italian people, and Swedish people. Others have some problems:

  • Image:McdSlvs2.JPG - The site linked to doesn't contain all of the images, so there's no way to verify them. I've tagged it no source.
  • Image:Svks.JPG - tagged as PD, but the left two (Dubcek and Sokol) aren't.
  • Image:Sln.JPG - This one will probably have to go. None of them appear to be PD.
  • Image:Rmn2.JPG -Vlad and Grigorescu are fine, the other two I haven't been able to verify.

If you're interested, I'm happy to give you some time to work on them and then just delete the old revisions, rather than listing them for deletion and going through the whole process. Here are the relevant commons categories, respectively:

I'm happy to help track some more stuff down if you're interested in working on these. Let me know. Thanks. Chick Bowen 04:56, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

We need sources--trying to work it out by logic never works. It's one thing for a photograph of someone who died before 1923, but a painting could have been painted posthumously. As for fair use--part of our fair use policy is that a rationale has to be stated that one particular fair use image is necessary for a particular article. We couldn't really have an article on Guernica, for example, without a picture of it, so it's OK to reproduce the painting for that article. But you can't make an argument like that for an article like Slovenians, because there's no reason that those particular Slovenians need to be included. Thus, all of these generalized articles about a people need free images. I think that goes for Croats, too, actually--the PD images are fine there, but the should all be PD. Image Tagging Image:MacedoniansIMG.JPG

edit

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:MacedoniansIMG.JPG. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jkelly 19:56, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Crts-3.JPG)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Crts-3.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
