edit

Hi, I am an MA student at CUNY Graduate Center working in a class Feminist Text and Theories Feminist Publishing

I am planning to make some improvement to this page. Specifically Double Jeopardy: To Be Black and Female

As a preliminary, here is my annotated bibliography.

Carson, Clayborne. 1981. In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s. Massachusetts : Harvard University Press. This paper discussed political activism of Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee and black liberation struggle. It also discussed Beal’s role in SNCC and black activism.

Davis, Angela Y. 2016. Freedom is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement. Chicago: Haymarket Books. Davis’ book critically examined the struggles of black people, and how racism and capitalism exploited and marginalized people of color. The book also looked at transnationalism and global human rights violations against the minority.

Hunter, Charlayne. 1970. "Many Blacks Wary of 'Women's Liberation' Movement in the U.S." PRoQuest Historical Newspapers: The New York Times, November 17: 47. This paper discussed black feminism and black women’s role in the black liberation struggle. It also examined relationship between black women and the white women’s liberation movement.

James, Stanlie Myrise. 1989. "Black Feminism: A Comparative Study of Women in Ghana and the U.S." Dissertation . Denver: University of Denver, August. This study discussed black feminism by comparing women’s liberation in Ghana and the U.S. It identified issues that black women encounter in both countries which development theories failed to analyze, thus proposes black feminist theory analysis.

Jordan, June. 1979. To Be Black and Female. New York Times. New York: New York Times, March 18. Accessed November 18, 2018. https://www.nytimes.com/1979/03/18/archives/to-be-black-and-female-black.html. Jordan discussed Michele Wallace's book “Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman” and Frances Beal’s essay Double Jeopardy: To be Black and Female. The article analyzed the oppression of black women and the relationship between black male and female.

King, Deborah K. 1988. "Multiple Jeopardy, Multiple Consciousness: The Context of a Black Feminist Ideology." Signs (The University of Chicago Press) 14 (1): 42-72. This paper critically analyzed the multiple oppressions of black women in the U.S. from a black feminist ideology. It expanded Frances Beal’s theories of oppression of black women by including an economic class and homophobia oppression analysis. The paper examined how capitalism exploited black women. It also discussed how the multiple oppressions of black women informed their multiple conscious based on black feminist theory.

Taylor, Keeanga-Yamahtta. 2017. How We Get Free. Edited by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. Chicago: Haymarket Books. Taylor’s book discussed black feminism by the Combahee River Collective. It analyzed black feminism from a capitalism and class oppression perspective as the Combahee River Collective founders argued black women’s oppression is rooted in capitalism.

Taylor, Ula. 1998. "The Historical Evolution of Black Feminist Theory and Praxis." Journal of Black Studies (Sage Publications, Inc. ) 29 (2): 234-253. This paper discussed the evolution of black feminist theory and praxis. Taylor identified black feminist theories that shaped black women’s liberation struggle.
