Towards the end of your essay, you put

To pretend that Young Earth Creationism is the only thing a Christian can believe in is rather Pharisaical -- Old Earth Creationism/Theistic evolution is accepted by most Christians outside the United States. Believe whichever you feel lead to, but don't dismiss your brothers and sisters as less Christian over so trivial an issue (we're not baptized in young earth creationism, after all).

However, Christianity, and the whole Bible, hinges on the accuracy of the Genesis account. Jesus believed Genesis, quoting it to support key points, Matt 19:4-5, Matt 23:35, Matt 24:37-39. Jesus is compared and contrasted with Adam, the first man, by Paul in his explanation of how salvation works, in 1 Corinthians 15 and Romans 5. If there were millions of years of death before sin, it completely foils the purpose of Jesus atoning death, which is what baptism represents. This is one reason why young earth creationism is the only valid Christian interpretation of the Bible.
