Hi, thanks, I uploaded a higher res. version of my ballpoint pen photo, sorry ive taken so long I just noticed you send me a message! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lander777 (talkcontribs) 18:00, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

About the CERN article

You are completely correct - the sentence was out of context and in the wrong section. I have replaced it with new paragraph at the start of the article which says what CERN actually does. Of course, you are free to change it if you are not happy with it! --Jll 10:33, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Image:Uroligheder.jpg

The image has no source. Superm401 - Talk 04:40, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

This image has absolutely no source. There is a copyright tag, but the author does not say who photographed the image, when, or exactly where. The tag has nothing to do with the image subject, and everything to do with the image's copyright info, or lack thereof. Superm401 - Talk 16:11, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Austrian Satellite Navigation Coin

Hi there,

Just curious, why did you put the other side on the coin on the "See also" section of the image?

Thanks, Miguel.mateo (talk) 22:51, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, but I dont really understand why do you ask? The images are definetly related, don't you agree?
A longer explanation would be: I clicked on the image in the related article, and thought it would show both coin sides. However, they are seperate images, and I thought it would be handy for the reader to see both sides with one click, and inter-linked them. I am not saying this should be an official policy or anyhting, just eases the random reader's life a bit.
Also, Galileo (satellite navigation) only links to the other side image of the coin, as does Compass rose. All in all, this is a very beautiful coin, do you have it? :) hydrox (talk) 20:56, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
I was not critisizing, I was trying to understand the rationale behind. I will start collecting these coins from next year, I need to finish another collection first. Anyway thanks for the contribution ;) Miguel.mateo (talk) 23:10, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Good point! I've added my sources to the description page on the Wikimedia Commons. Citynoise (talk) 12:10, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I didn't realize the page was copyrighted, so thanks for pointing it out. I didn't realize it because the page had no copyright symbol anywhere on the website. -- 科学高爾夫迷(讨论|投稿) 12:46, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi

If you feel like it can you run through these. I have my doubts about some of the other contribs too (you just tagged one & I deleted it). The user has a tendency to remove tags... Off line for a bit now. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:32, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I left a comment on his talk page asking for his status and relation to the articles. hydrox (talk) 08:46, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Shelter Island

I've redirected the article you tagged for speedy deletion about Shelter Island, San Diego to the existing article La Playa, San Diego, California which appears to be the correct name of that area of San Diego. Just wanted to let you know. Thank you for your contributions to quality control on Wikipedia! ConcernedVancouverite (talk) 23:00, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Kiitos

Suuri kiitos panostuksestasi artikkeliin Helsinki slang. Hi there

Thank you for the notifications about the article I am working on, but please have patience as this is the first time I've added an article to wikipedia and from the history you can see what errors and troubles I'm running into! The article is a school project I have to work on. Dylara (talk) 04:08, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Graphic Request

Hey hydrox, I was wondering if you could try creating a vector version of the provincial Coat of Arms of Ontario, Canada? An image to trace off can be found here: File:Coat of Arms of Ontario.png. Thank you. Connormah (talk) 00:25, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Uncited material requires citation

as per WP:BURDEN, if there is no citation any editor may remove. it is not a troll edit, Wikipedia relies on well sourced information. I'm sure you don't prefer me to remove the uncited material. LibStar (talk) 05:23, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

it's hardly troll editing, it is probably all fully self evident to you as you are Finnish and therefore probably know very well the history of Helsinki. I concede that "elsewhere, technological advancements such as railroads and industrialization were key factors behind the city's growth" probably doesn't require a citation but other factual information such as statistics (which can be easily made up in WP with no citation) require a citation. LibStar (talk) 08:32, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
the thing is, large chunks of uncited text come from some source, whilst I could write about my local town from the top of my head, this is not sufficient for WP. Good faith to me is more assuming that the citations match the actual claims. If any information is widely known, then it should easily be verifiable with sources. LibStar (talk) 11:47, 14 April 2010 (UTC)
As an experienced editor, you should understand that you cannot demand or expect editors not to edit because you feel they don't have enough knowledge. see Wikipedia:OWN#Comments. WP is an open edit encyclopaedia. LibStar (talk) 15:02, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
ownership of articles includes trying to discourage others to edit. I presume you are Finnish, and therefore many of the Finnish articles seem obvious to you despite lack of sources. this is not as obvious to someone not from Finland. I will restate: you should understand that you cannot demand or expect editors not to edit because you feel they don't have enough knowledge. see Wikipedia:OWN#Comments. LibStar (talk) 01:43, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Siperia

Could you please add the references from the English Wikipedia article Siperia to the corresponding Finnish Wikipedia article, so that the Finnish article won't be tagged as unreferenced? Thank you. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 13:31, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

That's a good point. I copied the reliable source (newspaper) reference to fi-wiki, but the other reference is a self-publication, and as such meaningless. --hydrox (talk) 14:37, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Generalissimo

Hydrox, thanks for the reminder about this topic. I was pointing out precisely what lines were unsourced so as to give advice to anyone interested in the subject before deleting the unsourced material. Salut, --IANVS (talk) 17:13, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Saw your marking of a dead link on Buran (spacecraft). Just thought I'd let you know, I fixed your marking of the link. When you mark dead links, just put {{dead link}} next to the link, and that marks it and takes care of whatever else Wikipedia does with dead links. SchuminWeb (Talk) 19:00, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the info! --hydrox (talk) 19:03, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Minor edits

Applying an editing template like original research and refimprove involves no major removal or addition of text, hence it is minor. if I was removing/adding large chunks that would be a "major edit". LibStar (talk) 01:51, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

thanks, for your comments. no I'm not Finnish. so not anti Helsinkian! just have an interest in Scandinavia. yes we have different standards, so I hope we can come to some common ground. as for Music of Finland, just looked like an unreferenced essay so therefore has potential for original research. I'm removed that tag though. as a native Finnish speaker, perhaps I could get your assistance on some Finnish articles? kiitos! LibStar (talk) 02:07, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Excuse me. I'm trying to develop a new info box but apparently am doing it wrong.

Hello, I created Infobox UScurlingclub in an effort to create a new infobox and test it, but about 30 seconds after I created it, you deleted it.

So PLEASE tell me how I should go about creating and testing a new infobox. I have looked and looked and have found a lot of good information on the subject of creating, just not WHERE I should do the testing.

Thanks. --WaxonWaxov (talk) 12:51, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

OH! Wrong namespace! I shoudl have looked at the history before writing this note. Thanks for the correction. Sorry, but I have been dealing with a lot of deletionists so I might be a little short-tempered. --WaxonWaxov (talk) 12:58, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Help for Translation

Dear Hydrox We are looking for somebody who could translate into Finnish (and upload on Finnish WP) a page re the international artistic literary movement founded in Italy in 2007: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMMAGINE%26POESIA Can you please help us ? Thanks a lot--RiverTeifi (talk) 03:53, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Hydrox for your suggestion. In the winter issue of the Welsh review The Seventh Quarry there will be a page about the Movement and a talk about it in the June Congress of Cross Cultural Communication in Swansea. So I'll write again when the article comes out. Greetings from Italy --RiverTeifi (talk) 17:33, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Your re-reverts

The user was banned for copyrighted text violations as well, so if you can take full responsibility for his edits, go ahead - reinstate them all. Be aware that you might face the same consequences, however, if there are any violations. Nymf hideliho! 19:31, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I went through those that I reverted, and they seem perfectly valid. I am yet to see any proof of text copyvios by ThatRockMetalGuy. What I've seen is some citations attributed as copyvios. What you listed on his talk page (namely [1] vs. [2], and [3] vs. [4]) are both covered by fair use in my mind (one sentence, and one longer chapter that should have maybe been redacted a bit, but it is clearly marked as a citation). Unless you can provide any stronger evidence of text copyvios, I would indeed suggest reinstating all his text edits.

Ok, you can stop. If you want you can block me, but the information i have written in the articles are all valid. They are from: reliable sources, books, CD booklets, interview and so forth. So i only ask not to remove them.

--hydrox (talk) 21:47, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Why would you think that is covered under the NFCC rationale? I do not believe that they are covered by fair use, and obviously the several administrators did not either (both on the talk page of the user and at the ANI thread that I created). Neither of the copyright violations that I pointed out are marked as citations, by the way. Before reinstating any further edits, you should bring it up at for proper comments elsewhere. Nymf hideliho! 22:58, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
I am not claiming NFCC but right to normal citation. NFCC is for files only AFAIK. Unless American copyright is radically different from what I know of Finnish copyright, you can quote other texts to some extent, even verbatim, as long as it is not plagiarism. I do think in the second case a source would have been very appropriate (maybe this is why user "confessed" to the "stealing"?) but in the first case he provided the source (songfacts.com) correctly.
However, I am not reverting his edits back anymore, because I didn't remove them in the first place – I just re-reverted those that were obviously non-violating and clearly constructive. Like you "warned" me about "facing the same consequences", I would like to remind you that you are also responsible for the material that you delete from articles and responsible for your actions. Deleting article content blindly is not responsible editing, and there is no Wikipedia policy that states that contributions by banned users that are not related to the reason why they were banned should be "erased from history". --hydrox (talk) 23:26, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Not commenting on the rest of your comment right now as I need to sleep, but WP:BAN#Edits by and on behalf of banned editors clearly states that the presumption should be to revert any edits by banned users, unless it is edits such as undoing vandalism or fixing typos. Nymf hideliho! 23:31, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Obviously you are reading that page “like the Devil reads the Bible”. Quote: "This does not mean that obviously helpful edits (such as fixing typos or undoing vandalism) must be reverted just because they were made by a banned editor, but the presumption in ambiguous cases should be to revert." Apparently you have some grounds to believe that all his edits are copyvios – but based on what? I have still not seen a single piece of evidence that User:ThatRockMetalGuy (or one of his sockpuppets) was putting copyrighted text to Wikipedia. And, I still see all this fuzz as a simple case of misunderstanding (or not reading at all) the non-free content guidelines and serious case of ignorance, which due to nobody being willing to take the time and explain him what is acceptable and what is not regarding to image uploading, lead to Wikipedia loosing a valuable contributor. As long as you don't provide any real evidence of plagiarism, my view will hold. --hydrox (talk) 00:05, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
I am starting to believe that this is personal for you. Is that the case? As I said in the ANI thread and at the talk page of the banned user, there are two confirmed confirmed cases (I haven't bothered to look for any more, as I have better things to do) where the user has plagiarized text. The user also hinted not only once, but twice, at the possibility of other cases, and showed that he does not understand the basics of copyright. Several administrators concurred, and the initial deal of a possible unblock was withdrawn. As simple as that. Nymf hideliho! 17:33, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Whether there was ever any consensus about him plagiarising text content is very debatable. Plagiarism is about copying some content and claiming it as your own – no evidence of that anywhere. One copied sentence is just not enough. ALL content on Wikipedia should be based on sources, and in the above statements the user admits to using sources as basis of his contributions, which is rather positive. Most people understand by heart that plagiarism is not right, but because Wikipedia accepts fair-use images in some situations I can understand if some users get confused about the image policy and erroneously think that everything goes. Solution is not to ban and erase from history, but to educate and correct. This is personal to me in the sense that I try to support educating, not biting the WP:NOOBs. So, NO I am not meatpupeting anyone for heaven's sake; I am interested in this case as myself personally for normal editorial interest, and have been closely but silently following it unfold since February. And just to be clear: I don't support unbanning ThatRockMetalGuy for now unless we can build a system where he is simply technically barred from uploading ANY images. His unfree image spamming has been a cause of major headache to everyone, and I totally agree on the ban until he has done his homework. --hydrox (talk) 19:01, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

And what goes to things being personal, I couldn't help to notice your personal crusade against this user. I was originally tipped off about your manhunt when you removed most of the newly added content in Antti Hulkko without giving any reason. When confronted, you gave a vague explanation of the user having uploaded bad images and "added POV content"[5], which was rather peculiar as most of the redacted material was the best thing to happen to the article in 2 years – replacing the image would have obviously been the right course of action. I can see that you are an editor with strong personal opinions an a total unability to take any criticism whatsoever. Instead you threaten me with an indef. copyvio ban and accuse me of serving as a proxy for another user when I decide to stand up against treatment that I see as being plain wrong for the newbie and suboptimal for Wikipedia's content. If you can't keep your cool, I kindly ask you no to write to my talk page about this case anymore. Thanks, --hydrox (talk) 06:32, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

I had no clue that this user was "Rock&MetalFan" until I started digging after "ThatRockMetalGuy" was blocked. So if you think I am on a personal crusade against this user, you are wrong. I will, however, act accordingly when someone spamming bad uploads crosses my path. As will I when any future socks crosses my path. Have a look at other socks that I have dealt with here, for example. Same thing there. For the record, I have not accused you of anything. It was a simple (valid) question, given the circumstances. If you construed it differently, I apologize.
A banned user is just that - banned. That means that any and all edits (except for typos, or reverting vandalism), even on behalf of the banned user, should be reverted. That includes edits to articles, uploads and newly created articles by this user. There is no way around that policy. A banned user is not welcome in any way until the ban has been lifted. Also, the policy states that I can do these reverts without providing any further explanation, so consider my reply a courtesy.
As for this user being a newbie, that is not really the case is it? The user edited for several, several months, even being blocked numerous times, and received close to 100 warnings on all accounts combined. As the administrators stated, this user is not really learning. There's a WP:COMPETENCE issue preventing the understanding of Wikipedia guidelines and policies. Nymf hideliho! 12:31, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I value and respect your work in enforcing Wikipedia's guidelines. A banned user is not welcome and I accept and support that notion – it's the only way to keep out the people who want to, or just involuntarily happen to, damage Wikipedia and/or its integrity for whatever reason. But please try to see my side as well, I re-reverted these edits because I thought they were valuable and there was evidence that they were not copyvio, as user had demonstrably rephrased some of those edits that I re-reverted – which is already enough to clear any suspicion of blatant (verbatim) plagiarism.
All in all, I don't think the danger here really is that Mr. RockMetalGuy would be compromising the textual legality of Wikipedia as there is just zero evidence of serious text plagiarism. The image issue is wholeanother thing and I do admit that a ban was the only real choice left given his history of totally ignoring the Image Use Policy and an astonishing amount of warnings.
Rock&MetalFan was obviously his first account, and it got banned much faster for the same reason as his later account(s). I would go as far as to supporting his ban on grounds of sockpuppetry alone. I have posted a note on his sockpuppet investigations page (that you apparently reverted as an edit to archived case), but it's irrelevant anyway as he is now banned. Also, if RockMetalGuy is reading this, you can contact me via private message if you want help in lifting your ban and instruction about how to avoid being rebanned for breaching the image use policy. Kiitoksia, --hydrox (talk) 19:52, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
