Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket#My two cents

Hi,

Can I ask you the same question that I have asked Johnlp and Andrew nixon can you be clear, what do you both think the guildlines on club teams should say ? Should they stay as they are ? Should it be clarified that they only apply to English and Australian club teams? should all mention of club teams be removed ? or do you favour another form of words should be used. ? Mtking (talk) 21:26, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Mtking - sorry I've been a bit sporadic at the forum - real life intervenes. In all honesty, I think you're heading in the right direction with the proposals. There's no doubt that many of the articles were created for clubs that weren't notable. It was perhaps unfortunate that only Irish articles were tagged initially, and the comments at the AfD's related to the "standard" of cricket being played, and yet there was an (arguably) equal standard in England with articles on clubs. Personally I find fault with some of the arguments which comment on the "standard" of cricket played - we all know that there's a dramatic drop-off in standard once you get outside the main cricket nations, but the criteria is (as you point out) notability, not standard. I'm hoping a balance will be found for Cricket (and we can certainly get a small bit of inspiration from other sports), with some wording relating to clubs playing at the the highest levels within a country being automatically notable. By highest level - it's up to us to decide what that means. I'd prefer a generic blanket wording rather than a country-by-country approach to avoid any future accusations of favoritism or nationalism. Thanks for asking though, and feel free to copy and paste this wherever fits. --HighKing (talk) 22:23, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Reverted your edit

Hello, I have reverted your edit on John Leavitt. The match of the family's Y-Dna markers is easily substantiated by a search on Ysearch, the world's largest genetics database, owned by FamilyTreeDNA, the world's largest genetics testing firm. The web address for Ysearch is ysearch.org. The markers of the individuals found at Eulau, a discovery referenced in the piece and extensively in the media, are Ysearch number 2C465. One simply specifies the number of markers to match to (in this case 16), and the genetic distance (in this case 2). You can repeat the search for fewer markers, say 15, and the results speak for themselves. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 19:03, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

edit question

Hello, Any particular reason you removed the fully referenced claim that the Parish Walk is the largest race walk in the British Isles? The linked reference clearly shows the Parish Walk to have the largest number of competitors of any annual walking race by some margin. I am new to Wiki editing but I did carefully research this first. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bassey1976 (talkcontribs) 12:16, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

The reason it was removed is because nowhere on the reference does it say it's the largest race anywhere. You're using original research to infer it is the largest by using the number of competitors. Take a look at the link WP:OR as well as WP:SYN. To make the claim, you need to show a reference in a reliable 3rd party source making the claim. There is a reference that states it is the largest walking event in the Isle of Man, so I put that in the article as it is attributable. --HighKing (talk) 12:41, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
I do plan on responding, but I have a sick pet at this end, and my response will take some time to write out. MarmadukePercy (talk) 12:15, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Cool. I'll look out for it. --HighKing (talk) 13:15, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
