Speedy deletion nomination of John Gallagher (basketball coach) edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on John Gallagher (basketball coach) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Figureofnine (talk) 17:16, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • As I just said in the section beneath this, I don't really understand what is at issue here. The John Gallagher (basketball coach) article provides references that show Gallagher to be a head men's basketball coach in the America East Conference. There are articles for each of the other eight coaches in the league, so Coach Gallagher would appear to qualify as a notable person by Wikipedia's standards. This is the first article I have posted, so I may be missing something that would help prove his "noteworthiness," but I feel like I provided the necessary references. Considering the existence of the other eight coaches' pages, I see no reason to delete this one. If there is anything I need to add, please let me know specifically so I can work on that. Thanks very much! Hartfordathletics (talk) 17:41, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Username edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (Hartfordathletics) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. • I don't really understand what is at issue here. There are articles for each of the other eight coaches in the league, so Coach Gallagher would appear to qualify as a notable person by Wikipedia's standards. This is the first article I have posted, and I took pains to be as straightforward and factual as possible. If there are biased or incorrect statements in the article, I would ask for some advice rather than a tag requesting "speedy deletion" or a complaint about my user name, since the subject of the article would appear to meet the standards for a Wikipedia page and the content, at least as far as I can tell, is acceptable. Thanks very much! Hartfordathletics (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
No problem. You have contested the deletion notification, and the article will be further evaluated for inclusion based on Wikipedia criteria. I suggest that you use the article talk page to present your case for inclusion. Figureofnine (talk) 17:50, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Got it, thank you! Hartfordathletics (talk) 17:52, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Great. Remember that one needs verifiable sources not related to the subject matter. Good luck with it. Figureofnine (talk) 20:32, 6 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
