File:First Haystack Ski Area lift ticket sold.jpg

Hi, can you please add an image copyright tag that pertains to the photo itself (not just the tickets that are shown)? The person who took the photo will need to agree on the terms. Wikiacc () 02:53, 2 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for the comment, I was pretty lost when reading the copyright details, so I didn't end up including it in the actual page. I am going to delete the image, just need to figure out how ha.

Hi, feel free to ask any questions you might have. If you still want to delete the image just edit it and put {{db-g7}} at the top of the page. Also, please sign your messages by putting ~~~~ after them. Wikiacc () 00:29, 3 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I would appreciate the help. I don't have a lot of experience with copyright. I'll start super basic. I own [photograph] from a 1964 press packet. I took a photograph of it. Can I upload this into the commons? The photo was found in an old warehouse of a PR firm that went out of business.Happyinwater (talk) 12:31, 3 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Happy to help, especially since copyright is so arcane! Do you have the whole press packet? Check thoroughly for a copyright notice. If you don't find one, and you're positive the press packet was actually released (rather than just sitting unused), you should be able to upload it. (The reason is that until 1977, if a work was published in the US without a copyright notice, it wasn't copyrighted.) In the license section select "public domain" and then the "other"/text box, and put {{PD-US-no notice}}. For more background, see Commons:Hirtle chart.

Feel free to keep asking me questions, but if I don't respond (or you'd prefer to ask someone else) ask at c:Commons:Help desk. Wikiacc () 01:29, 4 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much, very helpful. Follow-up...what if it was created after 1977? On a similar but different topic, I have newspaper clippings that I think would add to the Haystack article. For example, an advertisement like this. The ad was in the Bennington Banner, 14 Jan 1966. Does fair use cover me using this? Thanks again for all the help. After 1977, you also have to check the copyright registration records. It's a bit of a pain. See c:Template:PD-US-1978-89 for more info.
That particular ad is probably too basic for copyright protection (it's just a few words and some shapes; see c:Template:PD-text) but you might want to get a second opinion at the help desk. If it does turn out to be copyrighted, the rules are (1) it has to be uploaded on Wikipedia not Commons, and (2) it has to follow WP:NFCC which is pretty strict.
