In an article far away

you made this edit.[1] This claim of a Sumerian origin for the word has been picked up recently and added to various articles. This led me to do some research, and although some musicologists do make this claim, I find at least one who disagrees strongly and the Sumerian specialists I can find have also disagree or rather don't agree and use a different word. This is all made clear at Talk:Pandura by my recent edits. I'm not sure if you are still interested or not. Your role as copyright enforcer

You removed a video link I posted to the [Jimmy Rushing] entry, insinuating, but offering no evidence, that it the posted video violated copyright. Google determines what videos violate copyright on YouTube, and I fail to see why you are in a better position to know than Google is, unless you are the copyright holder. Google removes videos when a valid claim of copyright violation is made, and before that there is no assumption (and certainly no proof) that the video violates copyright. You have not demonstrated that you have special copyright expertise, and even that would not give you special knowledge about a given video. You merely draw you own conclusions, which override those of Google, and do as you wish. If I can't know if a video violates copyright, how can you know? And if you do not have such factual knowledge, why do you assume a violation, and the right to delete a link? Please explain any knowledge you have that the video in this instance violates copyright. If you do not have that factual knowledge, please explain why you have the right to act as if it does violate copyright. Do you know of any legal precedent for holding a person or entity liable for linking to a copyrighted item without knowledge that there is a copyright violation? According to the Digital Media Law Project, "As long as you do not know that a work infringes someone's copyright, then you cannot be held liable for contributory infringement for directing users to that work." The mere mention of the video being available from Rhino -- which has now apparently allowed the video to go out of print -- is not proof of copyright ownership. MOS of music

Pardon my English, but I have a question regarding to MOS of any WikiProject related to music (in my case jazz). Is it O.K. to wikify dates that have to do with album releases (X-year in music) such as the ones you see here and here? Genre discussion

Hi Gyrofrog, I think you may have misunderstood my post. I'm not in favour of relying on allmusic. It was just an example. My idea was to either a) remove genre from the infoboxes. or b) have set to a select number of genres that an English-language audience understands.It was not a poll, it was a discussion on a way to finding other ways of handling it. Harar

Hello, you changed my edit for Harar, asking me for citation. Where is your citation that Arabs founded Harar in the 7th century? There is no evidence that Yemenis came to Eastern Ethiopia in the 7th century and settled there. Where is the evidence? Where is the evidence that Harar is even that old? Why are you crediting foreigners over the obvious -the traditional residents and rulers of Harar? Harar is a city built by the people of the eastern part of Ethiopia who are predominately Muslims. Some of the architecture is obviously related to Yemen, but that is because they would have brought Yemeni architects and craftsmen as they were strong trade links with Yemen. Hi, this citation is obscure, unsure and contradictory. It uses the term "probably", and than states that islam was introduced in the 1200's It Harar was founded by Yemenis the 9th century, Islam would have been introduced than. We need a Harari source or a Yemeni source to make a claim that Yemeni founded the city, and if not available beyond an obscure source, I think such a claim should not be mentioned. It is unfair to keep giving credit to foreigners at the expense of African accomplishments unless there is strong grounds for doing so. There is no doubt strong links with Yemen due to Islam, but there is no history of Arabs founding cities and towns in the interior of sub sahara Africa. What is known is that trade links result in the development of markets which can grow into towns organically which can attract foreigners and their influences. Ethiopia is a patrilineal society. So, you take your father's ethnicity. Most of the people in the notable Amhara people are commonly known to have Amhara lineage through their father. Some people might argue they are of different ethnicity but it all depends on the father.

I agree with you that it is not easy to confirm whether a person is from one ethnic group or not. It is a common knowledge as to which ethnic group the person belongs to. Actually you can't prove for most of the individuals. There is no database where you can go and find the ethnicity of a person. There are no documents online where you can verify this.

The exception to this are Oromo people. Since they are very nationalistic, you can find names of individuals on Oromo websites. However, Amhara, Tigre, and Gurage people almost never list their people on websites. Good luck with that.

Teddy Afro is Amhara. His mother or his father mother might have Oromo or Gurage, but in Ethiopia ethnicity goes down through fathers line. So, hope that solves your confusion. FORGOT LEE SCHIPPER REFERENCE, OOPS!

Hello there Gyrofrog! Dreadfully sorry, I forgot to add the reference for the Schipper music entry... Perpetually in a hurry writing, editing and correcting texts, books, posts and mag columns on jazz, that I forgot the bloody reference TWICE!!! Absent-mindness, Astrologers say, is common during the astronomic phase of Mercury going retrograde (in reverse) from 1 Feb until 28 Feb 2014. It happens a couple of times a year and it's a bugger for many involved in writing, because Mercury rules written texts and travelling of any kind. Page Removal

Thank you for the helpful message explaining the removal of the Abbey Rader page. I understand your points and will rewrite in accepted format. I did have a couple of questions, however. 1) Is the original page content available somewhere? I'd like to use it as an outline for content, layout, and a reminder of helpful sources. 2) Also, you provided a link to the WP:NPOV page and stated the text as written wouldn't comply. You pointed out some phrases in the original article that specifically do not comply if I understand correctly. Would removing such phrases eliminate the NPOV concern? 3) Finally, since this is a biographical entry, it seems to me that it might be more difficult to paraphrase than in other subject areas. Much of the article will be facts or events that occurred in one way. Is there a bit more leeway on these type of entries in terms of the direct quotations allowed?

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Amhara People

I really wonder who gave you the authority on Ethiopian history. If you doubt the authenticity of the individuals listed under Amhara people , you do not have any other criteria that prevent you from doing the same for the individuals listed under Oromo, Tigre, and others. You can not just say it "makes sense" for me.

The same standard should be applied to all ethnic groups. If you put a tab on the Amhara people, you should also put a tab on the Oromo people and Tigre people entries. I see your act as racist attack on an entire ethnic group, which is considered vandalism on wikipedia. Stop being biased and targeting the Amhara people. Gembres (talk) 00:23, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Individuals listed under Amhara People

If you have issue with individuals, you can raise it on the main discussion page. I have removed Abebe Aregai and Birtukan Mideksa, who are part Tigrigna and Oromo. If you have issues with individuals single them out. You can't delete the entire section. Gembres (talk) 00:33, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

I don't think there is any better word that will describe a person who will single out Amhara people and question their identity while he glosses over other by simply saying it makes sense for him. Ethnicity is fluid not a static concept. Barack Obama can be described American of Kenyan heritage or American of Irish heritage, but this does not prevent a person from listing Obama under American people of Irish decent. The same applies to Teddy Afro and others you keep on mentioning. He is mix of Amhara and Gurage, hence people may put him under different categories. Washington, DC meetups in June

Greetings!

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

• On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
• Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
• The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!

Members of the Ethiopian Imperial Family

My name is Connie Jo Wilbun (Quave') Makonnen, the legally married spouse of HIH Paul Wossen-Seged Makonnen. He and I would like to know why our names have been omitted from some of the areas that identify the members of the family. The articles about history are not and have not been altered. If the truth is to be told, then that means not withholding information. My husband and I are offended by this omission. Because, when we took the steps to edit our names and include them as they should be spelled and to include my husband's entire name, these editions were removed. The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.
