Welcome!

edit
Hi, Gsp, Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the five pillars of Wikipedia. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page.

Additional tips

edit

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Happy Wiki-ing.

HammerFall

edit

Hello, Gsp! You made a good start by editing HammerFall. That article is one of my projects, and I appreciate very much the work you have done on it. I hope you stay here for a long time, as there is no such thing as "too many copy editors". Cheers! --Sn0wflake 01:31, 1 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Re: monobook.js opera problem

edit

Try adding a period (.) after the equals sign in the regex; i.e. "if (/basepage=/" changed to "if (/basepage=./". I don't have a copy of opera hanging around, so that may not work; if not, just let me know. I'm basically guessing here. If you use IRC, we could meet up in #wikipedia and try things faster. I'd like to get this solved. JesseW 19:13, 2 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Re: Speedy spelling edits

edit

Hi Gsp, thanks for the kind words :)

I don't use a bot to do my spell-checking (although there is one out there). I just started out by noticing spelling mistakes on random pages, took a note of them, searched for them, and then spell-checked the articles I found. Things just grew from there! I find that using a tabbed browser and a decent spellchecker helps streamline the process a lot.

What I like about my approach, as opposed to using the spelling bot, is that I'm constantly finding new spelling mistakes rather than just working of a list of known typos. Cmdrjameson 20:47, 24 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Greetings! I'm very sorry to have caused a potential for misunderstanding with the edits I made. In your message to me it sounds like you understand how things work here, and appreciate things for the right reasons. I can assure you that it wasn't because there was anything wrong with the info as such, just that it was the wrong info for an encyclopaedia article. It is for the same reasons that we don't have recipes for different dishes listed as articles. An example of what I mean can be found at the pushing hands article, where we talk about the theory and practical implications, but we don't tell people how to push. We have similar training in my style, but in the article I would have to mention it in the abstract (and indeed, I may add something about it to the article someday). If you were to refactor the info a bit, make it more third person, then it would be a great addition to the (admittedly small) article. Again, I'm sorry to have caused a misunderstanding and hope to work with you on articles in future. Another article that may interest you is the wuxia article, which needs a bit of help... Requesting comments on template alteration

edit

Hello. I see you are using one or more of the User instruments templates in your Babel box. Inspired by some recent developments, I want to rework all the templates in there (including ones used on user pages), to make them more like the regular Babel templates. However, I thought I should hear from the people this would affect before actually doing it. Please weigh in at User:Ddawson/User instruments. Ddawson 10:36, 6 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Featured article for December 25th

edit

I noticed you have listed yourself in Category:Atheist Wikipedians. That said, you will probably be interested in my suggested featured article for December 25th: Omnipotence paradox. The other suggestion being supported by others for that date is Christmas, although Raul654 has historically been against featuring articles on the same day as their anniversary/holiday. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-11-28 08:15

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
