May 2022 edit

Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of username and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:19, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

Ginger Booth is actually my name. I publish scientific simulators on my website, sure, because I authored them. I just created a new version of DaisyWorld - and the plots picture on the DaisyWorld article are from my previous software, which was in Flash Player and no longer works. Being blocked for using my own name, to point to a non-commercial teaching simulator, doesn't make any sense.

Decline reason:

If Ginger Booth is your name, that's not an issue in terms of your username. However, please read WP:COI and explain how your future contributions will be consistent with that policy. You don't have to have a commercial purpose in order to promote something. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 16:43, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

I intend a very specific edit. I understand that this is a COI and that perhaps instigating someone else to make the change might appear more even-handed. But the fact is, the picture on the DaisyWorld page is from a previous version of my DaisyWorld simulator. My intended edit is an updated picture,

Plots from a standard black & white DaisyWorld simulation.
That's it. I intend to replace my picture, with an updated picture. I contributed my online version of DaisyWorld to the DaisyWorld article, because anyone truly interested in DaisyWorld would like to see a simulator run. I have no current intention of making any other edit to Wikipedia.

Accept reason:

With the username aspect in error, and JLAN's comments, I've endeavoured to make it clear in the block log that this should not be considered a block - obviously there is a COI, but we can take care of that short of a block. If you use the edit request process and follow the instructions that's probably the best way to make edits to an article where you're linking to a site made by you. Best of luck, and apologies for the faff. Nosebagbear (talk) 11:29, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • @Justlettersandnumbers: looking at the edits/attempted edits, and that a seemingly comparable link and image was there for a while without issue, this is looking like an edit we probably would have accepted had the COI been disclosed, and I'm not seeing any reticence in doing so here. Any issue with me unblocking if Booth agrees to make the proposed edits through ERW? Nosebagbear (talk) 09:03, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the ping, Nosebagbear; do please go ahead! Ginger Booth, I think I owe you an apology – I should probably have unblocked your account when you made clear that you were editing under your real name. Thank you for your patience with us. Sorry for the confusion. My original contributing name jinjyaa apparently goes to some email address that no longer reaches me, so I simply...used my name. It's not like I'm hiding. Ginger Booth (talk) 17:10, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
