Speedy deletion nomination of IsItUp Network Monitor

Re: Question about my article

Hi Fred,

I am new to Wikipedia and don't want to get off on the wrong foot. I just wanted to add my product to the list of network monitors and tried to create an article that was similar to the others. It is admittedly an attempt to let people know that the product exists so to that extend it is promotion. So I guess my question is, can I add my product to the list of networking monitoring applications? If not, how can I can my product listed?

Hi Gary. There are a couple of issues here.

First and foremost, you have a conflict of interest with your product and your company. It is a very slippery slope to try to write neutrally about your own work. As you admitted, the underlying motive is really to promote the product, rather than just inform people about it. That's why it's best to let independent articles create an article, if it's warranted, or add it to the list.

As far as having a stand-alone article, the rule of thumb is that a subject needs to have gotten substantial coverage in independent reliable sources to have an article: that's the general notability guidelines. For a product, that would probably mean a full review in one (ideally, more than one) major trade or general publications. (I mean, if it's gotten several column-inches in the Wall Street Journal, it's probably notable.)

Finally, in most cases, the items on a list have to be independently notable. A quick scan of Comparison of network monitoring systems shows that all the other products have their own articles—in other words, they meet the notability criteria I mentioned above. So, until your product meets the notability criteria and has an article, it shouldn't go on the list.

So, what's the best step to go forward if you want your product listed? Find some reliable sources like newspaper and magazine articles about it and mention them here, on your talk page.
