Userpage clarification

edit

Hi, I noticed your question on JohnCD's Talk page and thought I'd come over here to clarify some things. First of all, I find editing Wikipedia to be highly enjoyable and satisfactory, and I'm sure you'll feel the same once you figure out how an encyclopedia is built and written. I'm not doubting how prestigious you are, and I have faith that what you wrote on your userpage was indeed true. However, it has very little relevance here. The opening lines of WP:USERPAGE say "User pages are pages in the User and User talk namespaces, and are useful for organizing and aiding the work users do on Wikipedia, and facilitating interaction and sharing between users. User pages mainly are for interpersonal discussion, notices, testing and drafts, and, if desired, limited autobiographical and personal content. User pages are available to Wikipedia users personally for purposes compatible with the Wikipedia project and acceptable to the community; Wikipedia is not a blog, webspace provider, or social networking site." Thus, you should focus your userpage about how prestigious you are in editing an encyclopedia and understanding polices, rather than fill it full of personal information. Such information would better belong on another website, (which you can link to) and if you are notable enough to have your own article than someone else might just come along and make it for you, using references from third-parties unrelated to you. Thank you, Jessemv. I had written a response as well, but had not got round to posting it, so I may as well add it here. Mr Frampton, I am sorry if you are disappointed, but I do not think you have understood what Wikipedia is about, which is not your fault because we do not explain it very well in advance.
There are many sites like Myspace, Facebook and LinkedIn where you can write about yourself, but Wikipedia is different: it is a project to build an encyclopedia. It is not for advertising or promotion of any kind and is very sensitive about that; we put a lot effort into keeping them out, and they are speedily deleted anywhere, even in user pages.
Writing about yourself is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. User pages are available for some information about yourself, but they are intended to help communication between the volunteers who are here to build the encyclopedia, and are not for "substantial content... that is unrelated to Wikipedia" such as lists of your achievement and links to your companies' websites.
The links at the top of this page will tell you more about Wikipedia and how to contribute. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 16:32, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
