Orson Scott Card templates edit

First of all, I want to thank you for the time you put in on editing the templates and for showing me the "|state = show" tag. I had a problem with people deleting the blank "|state =" tag which caused the navboxes I created to revert to autocollapse. While I do appreciate this and your efforts I have a small problem with your attempts at (Saving vertical space). Most of those navboxes will be added to over time and your space saving will make future edits more difficult. Also what you did does not follow the Wikipedia guidelines on template creation. See Template:Navbox. Finally what you did took time but will have absolutely no affect on the navbox’s appearance. With so much work to be done here at Wikipedia I can’t help but think that your skills could be put to better use than saving vertical space. Pmcalduff (talk) 01:37, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're quite, but not entirely, correct: When entering values on more than one line in a listX parameter of the {{Navbox}} (whether in a <div> or not), a <p> tag is automatically added, which currently has margin and line-height styling. So removing the <div>s does not have "absolutely no effect on the navbox's appearance."
That being said, I agree with you that maybe I should put my skills to better use :-) Also, I hadn't seen that Template:Navbox#Examples actually encourages the use of <div>, which, obviously, I'll respect (or start a discussion at Template_talk:Navbox). Thanks for pointing that out to me.
Best regards, Fred Bradstadt (talk) 08:35, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Pmcalduff (talk) 09:42, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Apologies for butting in, but was passing by and felt I should suggest that, whilst using <div>s within Navbox lists is not an automatic no-no, I think it can negate any liststyles used, so perhaps the Navbox examples should be tweaked to avoid them...? Template:Isaac Asimov novels edit

Hi again Fred,

Without the kind of groupstyle/liststyle assignments removed by the above, the spacing between lines within a group and lines between groups becomes far less easy to distinguish, the alternating white/grey backgrounds notwithstanding. Hope that makes sense. Okay to revert? Best wishes, Sardanaphalus (talk) 12:38, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
PS Any thoughts re the two threads above?

If the groupstyle/liststyle concern is common to all navbox templates (which it seems), you might want to start a discussion at Template talk:Navbox about changing the CSS. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 19:35, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
That sounds a good idea. Have done so here. Sardanaphalus (talk) 03:38, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think it is better because one, it's been that way for the longest time, why change now, and two it is centered with the 40's schedule unlike what you propose. However I do like that you added the hide feature to it. The only thing that bugs me on that new one is the 40's. If it stays centered, what the heck, let's change it. --Yankeesrj12 (talk) 19:50, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template:Bridges of Central London etc edit

Hi Fred:

  • 14:04, 29 February 2008 Fred Bradstadt (Talk | contribs) (1,011 bytes) (Use standard formatting. Change the CSS instead of manually changing all templates)

I agree, but (A) I'm not sure where/which CSS to edit; (B) as a regular user, I'm guessing I'd probably be unable to edit it; and (C) I imagine some consensus would be needed to do so anyway (presumably here?). Any advice on how to proceed...? Sardanaphalus (talk) 21:30, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

You could change the MediaWiki:Common.css (search for table.navbox) to include (based on your example 4):
/* default skin for navigation boxes */
table.navbox {
    background-color: #f9f9f9;
    border: 1px solid #aaa;
    clear: both;
    font-size: 90%;
    margin: 1em 0 0;
    padding: 2px;
    text-align: center;
    width: 100%;
}
 table.navbox th {
    background-color: #ccf;
    padding: 0.35em 1em;
    line-height: 1.1;
}
table.navbox td {
    line-height: 1.4;
}
but this would change line-height & padding not just for the “group” and “list” table cells, but for the header as well as above and below cells. If this is what you want, you should suggest it here.
If you want to change just the “group” and “list” cells, continue the discussion at Template talk:Navbox#Suggestions for default groupstyle/liststyle, groupNstyle/listNstyle. In this case, what you want to change are the lines 27–29 of Template:Navbox, where the defaults for groupstyle and liststyle are defined:
|gs = white-space:nowrap;background:#ddddff;text-align:right;{{{groupstyle|}}}
|os = width:100%;font-size:95%;{{{liststyle|}}}{{{oddstyle|}}}
|es = width:100%;font-size:95%;background:#f7f7f7;{{{liststyle|}}}{{{evenstyle|}}}
What you wanna suggest, again based on example 4, is:
|gs = white-space:nowrap;background:#ddddff;text-align:right;line-height:1.1;padding-top:0.35em;padding-bottom:0.35em;{{{groupstyle|}}}
|os = width:100%;font-size:95%;line-height:1.1;{{{liststyle|}}}{{{oddstyle|}}}
|es = width:100%;font-size:95%;line-height:1.1;background:#f7f7f7;{{{liststyle|}}}{{{evenstyle|}}}
Best regards, and good luck :-) Fred Bradstadt (talk) 21:59, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Liberia edit

Hi. Could you format Template:Liberia Districts with the counties in the blue panels on the left. Cheers ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:32, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{Navbox}} has pretty good documentation, so you should be able to reformat the {{Liberia Districts}} by yourself :-) Fred Bradstadt (talk) 14:44, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I'll be nice :-) {{Districts of Liberia}} is hereby beautified. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 20:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats great! I don't know why though you think I'm lazy. I create and fix tens of templates. But I always think of you as the template guru!! Anyway I was wondering if you could get the side plate Template:European cinema to collapse into a small box. I;ve seen it done to the Buddhism template. Its rather domineering to the articles I think . Cheers ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:07, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Plone-logo-2008.png edit

Thank you for uploading Image:Plone-logo-2008.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 15:59, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{EmmyAward Miniseries}} edit

hello. regarding the parenthesis in award templates. since all of the templates had parens from the start, i find it odd that you would make an argument for consistency. unless you can cite something in the mos, i would ask that you stop removing them. --emerson7 22:56, 13 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

First, I see no reason to have parentheses around an entire independent entry in a list. I you wouldn't recommending parenthesizing each of the miniseries' names as well :-)
Second, all similar templates in Category:Emmy Awards navigational boxes (and Category:Nobel Prizes navigational boxes etc.) don't have parentheses now, so adding them it is inconsistent. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 07:14, 14 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Convert preformatted text to wikitables edit

Thanks for you help in simplifying AHL team stats, such as the Maine Mariners. Stalking, One and Only Warning edit

Please would you stop vandalising and making unnessicary and unhelpful edits to templates. I find it particulary offensive that you seem to be targeting me for this vandalism. This is your one and only warning and if you continue your vandalism I will take action against you which may lead to your permanent of temproary ban from editing Wikipedia. {Electrobe (talk) 17:58, 30 March 2008 (UTC)}Reply

Whoa, whoa. I'm not vandalizing. Please take a look at my edits before revering - I'm actually trying to help you: I'm closing open <span> tags, I'm correcting the usage of {{·}} by removing preceding spaces, I'm matching <div> and </div> tags. You, on the other hand, are reverting my perfectly sane and legal edits, and I wish you wouldn't.
If it seems that I've been following you, it's because I was: Many of the templates you've been editing have the same minor errors (as mentioned above), and I was trying to catch & correct them all.
I don't mean to offend you, I just want to correct you :-) As I mentioned, please try to take a look at my edits before just reverting –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 18:10, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Your not trying to help correct me your delibrately altering all of the pages I have recently edited often unneccarialry and adding unnedded onbjects into the template at the same time. {Electrobe (talk) 18:13, 30 March 2008 (UTC)}Reply

Please explain what your problem is. I have tried to clean up messy or incorrect code in all of the mentioned templates. I don't know which part of which of the edits upsets you.
This is Wikipedia. You are not the only one to edit template or pages that you have been working on, or even created (see WP:Ownership). Best regards, Fred Bradstadt (talk) 18:35, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Im understand WP:Ownership however what I am saying is that you are editing articles which I am editing and creating on a large scalethat seems to me to be more than conincendence. You have edited at least 4 articels which I created yesterday and noboy yet even knows about apart from me and you. I t seems to me that you have gone through y recent contributions file and just edited as many pages on it that you could find. {Electrobe (talk) 19:02, 30 March 2008 (UTC)}Reply
You're quite right. As I wrote above (in my first reply to you):

Scout country templates edit

Why have you altered all of these? Personally, I do not like them, but I do think you should have discussed the changes on the Scout WikiProject or on the country Scout articles. Or have I missed such a discussion? --Bduke (talk) 10:48, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

There was no such discussion. I was bold and altered many of the scout templates so that they use more of {{Navbox}}’ features (specifically, the “group” parameter), thus reducing their vertical size. I kept the original title background color (#90ee90) and made the group background color (#a1ffa1) a little brighter that the title background (spefically, #111111 brighter, as in the Navbox blue colors). –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 10:59, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
It seems like a technical fix to a non-problem to me. I have asked the views of the Scout WikiProject, which I think you should have done for such a substantial change to how they look. I will of course accept the consensus of opinion there. --Bduke (talk) 11:41, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Miss USA templates (etc) edit

Hi, I saw you were still editing so I thought I'd better make a polite request -- please do not autocollapse the tables. They were originally autocollapsed and it was a real nuisance and a major pain. Hence, I added the "show" element to each of them. I am in the process of reverting that aspect of your edits. Leave me a message if you have any major issues with this. Cheers PageantUpdater talkcontribs 08:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

But I should have added that I definitely appreciate your other efforts with the templates! PageantUpdater talkcontribs 08:54, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi PageantUpdater. Yes, I just noticed that our edits crossed paths :-) I was trying to make the templates of Category:Beauty pageant templates, Category:United States beauty pageant templates, Category:Miss USA templates and Category:Miss Teen USA templates look and behave similarly. I wanted to avoid cases like for example Miss Texas USA#External links, where (currently), one template is collapsed and the other is not… Anyway, I will not object to you changing my edits to avoid autocollapse on the templates. Can I ask you, should a template as {{Vanbros states}} also not autocollapse? If so, just remove “autocollapse” from the class parameter. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 08:58, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
And likewise, I appreciate your work :-) Fred Bradstadt (talk) 08:58, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ideally, I'd appreciate no autocollapses. I agree that its a good idea to have the articles behaving similarly. My main reason for disliking autocollapse stems from the state article templates, I regularly flick through all the state articles, checking them or adding images etc -- having to contstantly "show" them worked for about a week until I grew frustrated beyond belief... feel free to keep going with the other changes, though :) PageantUpdater talkcontribs 09:01, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I agree that autocollapsed templates can be a pain in the … when bulk editing pages in your domain. On the other hand, for “plain” users / readers of Wikipedia, a load of non-autocollapsed templates at the end of a page looks … not good. I think it should be possible to use your user script to “show” all collapsed templates, in which case, I might convince you to let the templates autocollapse after all ;-) If you’re not familiar with JavaScript etc., I’d like to look into it for you. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 09:12, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sounds brilliant! I'd definitely be happy with that as a solution :) And I agree, I really was being "selfish", collapsed templates do look better for the wider publi but for me personally its a pain for editing! PageantUpdater talkcontribs 09:23, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think I got it working! If you add the line importScript('User:Fred Bradstadt/show all collapsed tables.js'); to your user script and refresh your browser’s cache, you should now see all collapsed tables as expanded after loading a page. –Fred Bradstadt (talk) 11:15, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll give it a go. And then I'd better go back and fix all my reversions :P PageantUpdater talkcontribs 11:18, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
