WikiProject tagging

There is nothing really tricky about it, the tagging is done based on the category. So you tell me the categories which belong to Spain and I could do the tagging. For example articles belonging to Category:Spain should be covered by the {{WikiProject Spain}} and perhaps many of the underlying subcategories. STTW (talk) 07:02, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

But tell me, why did you remove the tag of WikiProject Spain from the article Míl Espáine? Don't you think that it also deals with Spain, even if it is not very high in the importance scale? WikiProject Portugal

Hello EspañaViva! Regarding your question, I'm adding the tag manualy as I go along (even if I decided to add it in sequence to all the relevant articles in my watchlist). I wouldn't know how to create a bot. I wouldn't mind being a participant in WikiProject Spain, but, as with my participation in WikiProject Portugal, I wouldn't do much... I mainly like to monitor "my" articles. Being a Sociologist, they are basically connected with the History or Anthropology of Portugal (wich of course is intertwined with that of Spain im many aspects!). Occasionally, when it cames up, I've dealt with some issues regarding Spain's History or Anthropology, always trying to due justice to nuestros hermanos! The fact is I think we Iberians should stick together in the Wikipedia, namely regarding history articles and the like. Now... I must tell you that this sometimes makes me react against certain linguistic and historiographic traditions that seem to ignore Portugal when dealing with the whole of Iberia (for instance the habit of calling Spain to Hispania or Iberia...). This is a problem for me as you can imagine! Mind you, it's not a problem I've had with Spanish people, but mainly with English speaking persons (look up the discussion at Imperator totius Hispaniae). I admit I get sort of reactive... But my aim is one of precision and balance. In that sense, I do struggle for a NPoV on Portugal and Spain, amongst others, that does justice to its history and reality. Re: Removing images from Spain page

Sure, I will try to explain. If you look at other articles rarely they've got so many photos in gallery, usually there is no gallery at all. The reason is that it slows page loading a lot (also makes page longer), you know not everybody has broadband internet access like we do. Also those images were nice but more like from travel materials not encyclopedic because they really didn't tell reader much about Spain as for example image of Guggenheim Museum does. The point was to remove as many as possible. It would still be better if the remaining photos could be used in text because if they don't have place in the text they are likely less relevant to the article. And finally there is link to Wikimedia Commons in external links section of the article where you can include photos relevant to Spain and reader looking for images will click there. Wikipedia isn't picture gallery neither is article on Spain. I hope I clarified my point a bit. Thank you.--Pethr 15:48, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Spain

¡Gracias por la bienvenida! Concerning what I have in mind after the T-26 FAC either succeeds or fails is working on a couple of articles relevant to Spain. If the T-26 FAC fails I might continue work on the T-26, although anything people have commented has been solved. Problem is, nobody has actually objected or supported, insofar. Regardless, the two articles I'm looking forward to editing/creating at some point in the near future is my article on El Provencio, now that the ayuntamiento gave me some information on the history or what not. Problem is, that's my only "real" source. Unfortunately, I won't be heading back there this summer (I normally go visit my family for three months every year) so I can't look into the archives at the nearby town of San Clemente, or even the Cuenca. Failing that, I was hoping to write an article on the Leopardo 2E - the amount of information on the tank justifies its very own article. However, recently I've been looking forward to continuing improving light tank Wiki articles, now that I have done it with the T-26. I have been collecting sources for the Panzer I article. Gibraltar

It would not be a good idea to include the main article about Gibraltar in the Spain project. So far your robot has added a banner to the following:

Which is fair enough as Spain is mentioned in both.

However after an initial discussion a Spanish editor has produced a template without the Spanish flag, which is a good compromise as due to the long history of persecution, starting with Franco and only recently showing any sign of diminishing, remains an highly inflamatory symbol.

I hope you can respect our sensitivities and leave it at that.

Thank you for your comments on the project Spain page. I'm sure there are enough things to do, and I would rather not spend time on arguing - I do not think that creating a 'project Gibraltar' and putting the Gibraltar flag where it is inapppropriate is an answer, its the same thing I object to with the Spanish flag. It seems that some editors like to provoke disputes and I hope we can work together to prevent that. --Gibnews 22:31, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

WP Council

I will try to link the threads to WP:Spain in a moment, but there are several which are relevant... There has been quite some discussion on WP Council about "multiple tagging" by wikiprojects, from which (as far as I can see, and as yet) no general consensus has emerged. The "problem" (if and when it becomes a problem) is not restricted to WP:SPAIN, whatever the current arguments might suggest! :) I retain my general line that WP:SPAIN should be able to find solutions to such minor disputes—I haven't seen any major disputes yet and, in any case, WP:OWN comes into play at a certain point. Madrid GA!

Hehe, optimist are we? :-) I don't think Madrid is quite ready for GA yet. Almost, but not quite yet. For instance, there's the mater of references. It is my understanding (from other articles I've submitted for GA) that at least every paragraph should have a ref. And FA's are simply plagued with refs every two lines. So we need to get more refs, and format them with cite web and cite news. I'm gonna check the article for copyedit needs, and see if the structure of the sections looks good or could be further improved. Think anything important is missing? Peer review would definitely be helpful. Just between you and me though, these days GA doesn't mean quite what it meant in the old days -most articles are granted GA just like that. Yeah, I'm liasoning in the Spanish wiki trying to find the info requested. That article is going through FAC there, so you'd think it's more complete. My idea was to address concerns and then post I'd addressed them, but they do seem to be accumulating. Maybe we ought to close the PR, address all concerns, and then present it again at a later time? Creator of "Iberian Peninsula before First Punic War" map?

Hello EspañaViva! I do not know the creator of the "Iberian Peninsula before First Punic War" map. I can only see from the Commons page that it is a user called Q4767211492, that also identifies himself as Javier Fernandez Quiroga in another one of his maps. Hello again EspañaViva. You are right about the map, of course. That is why I called it a simplified map... But of course it has problems! For instance, in the classification of the peoples (the Lusitanians, being Indo-Europeans, where probably Proto-Celts, not Celts; there are doubts about classifiation of some of the Cantabrian tribes; also the situation of the Oretani is still in debate; some areas do not have any indication whatsoever of the peoples living there; the areas that do have indication tend to be homogeneous, making other peoples desappear, etc...). I believe I have a better source, that is to say, a better map! It's at [2], done by the archeologist Luís Fraga da Silva, of the Associação do Campo Arqueológico de Tavira (in the Algarve, Portugal, see also Arqueotavira , mail at mail@arqueotavira.com). I have placed as an external link in a lot of articles. The map is also available in pdf form at [3] with interactive layers. Its main aspects are:

1. Language: Portuguese and Latin.
2. Basic geography
   1. Coastal boundaries
   2. Main hidrography
3. Major ethno-geographic groups, represented by delimited territories and name identity
   1. Primary geographic-delimited ethnic groups (e.g. VASCONES).
   2. Greater social formations of mixed ethnic origin and shared socio-political and cultural environment (e.g. TURDETANOS)
   3. Territories of majority of specific ethnic-linguistic groups (e.g. CELTICOS).
4. Secondary ethnic and gentilician communities with toponymic, territorial and political identity, excluding smaller later oppida-centered civitates. (e.g. TITOS).
5. Pre-Roman urban centers:
   1. Native towns with recognized urban status in the beginning of Roman domination through specific coin emissions, identified by location and language of emission.
   2. Phoenician, Greek and Punic (Carthaginian) colonial foundations, still surviving in the end of the 2d Punic War. Only major places are identified. Towns of doubtful status and "factories" are not represented.
   3. Other selected urban centers, referred by historical sources, identified by name.
6. Colonial territories
   1. Coastal area of the "Circle of the Straight", economic and cultural commonwealth centred in Gadir/Gades.
   2. Geopolitical areas of colonization, territorial domination and political-military influence of Carthage, before the end of the 2d Punic War.
7. Greater surviving dominant linguistic groups and linguistic complexes.
   1. Native Iberian languages, non-indo-european and of doubtful origin: Proto-Basque, Eastern Iberian, Southern Iberian and Tartessic (Southwestern Iberian). This last one was residual by 200 B.C., replaced by celtian in most of its original territory.
   2. Pre-celt indo-european (Lusitanian group). Other primitive indo-european languages were, by then, probably only toponymic.
   3. Colonial languages: Libio-phoenician. African-punic dialects brought by colonialist populations settled by Carthage.
   4. Celtian and Celtiberian evolutions. The whole "celt" spectrum is present in Iberia, from early "urn-field" to late "La Tène". Gaulish migrations continued until mid I B.C. Central iberia (Celtiberia) was a diffusion center of later celt movements to the North West and, specially, to the Tartessic-Turdetan South.
8. Romanization
   1. Military frontier in 194 B.C. (after the Carthaginian defeat in Iberia) and 156 B.C. (before the Lusitanian/Celtiberian Wars)
   2. Roman Provinces after the 2nd territorial reorganization of August (before 7 B.C.).
9. Bibliography: The map has separated pages with the principal bibliography used in its conception and production (extensive sources!).
10. Access: The map file is in the Adobe Acrobat PDF format. It must be opened and processed with Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Reader or any third-party software compatible with version 6 or later.
11. Restriction of use: The current version cannot be edited or printed in high-resolution, saved in other formats or transferred to other image-editing software. Low-resolution printing and full-scalability is however adequate for most diffusion purposes from the original Adobe Acrobat software.
12. Copy and diffusion: The reproduction of the map or any of its layers is allowed in non-commercial uses by private individuals. The use by institutions or in all kinds of paid or profit-generating projects is not allowed without express permission from the author. The copyright notes must always be included in any third-party use.

Well... The map is not in English, mainly the name of the Pre-Roman Peoples of the Iberian Peninsula are in Portuguese/Spanish. They probably should be in the Latin form used in English. Do you think we could convince the author, Luís Fraga da Silva, to do an English version for wikipedia? Que piensas? The Ogre 13:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Cinco de Mayo

Please stop reverting this article to a version from many months ago, this is at least the second time you do that with a misleading edit summary. The article does not belong to you. Equendil Talk 12:46, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Amigo/amiga Equendil. Gracias por su ayuda and merci pour votre aide. However, my friend, you keep changing the Cinco de mayo article to an incorrect set of statements. If you read the very extensive citations (that you keep removing), you will see that Cinco de mayo is not a "national holiday" in the ordinary sense of that term. It is a regional holiday in Mexico, and a relatively minor one at that. For example, government offices, banks, and businesses all stay open. There are a few celebrations outside of the state of Puebla - and they are small. The language that you keep removing is factually correct, carefully worded, and has extensive citations.

If you have persuasive citations that support the language that you are insisting on, please post those on my talk page, so that you and I can discuss them. If you do not have persuasive citations, then I'm going to ask you to accept the correct description of the day - that it is a regional holiday in Mexico, etc. EspanaViva 05:53, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

You make it sound like I have a content dispute with you, but I do not. What I object to is the article being reverted to a version that is many months old, dismissing in the process *every single edit* that has been made to the article on the ground that they are "unexplained". That's a pretty poor rationale for a revert in the first place, and totally unacceptable for a massive one, especially seeing as edits have been made that are in fact properly commented in the edit summaries or talk page (at the very least by me). Now it appears you are objecting to very specific changes that have been made - not by me shall I add - to the article, I have to point out that mass reverting *every* single alteration to the article since you last edited it, including correction of the spelling or phrasing, categories that may have been added, and any unrelated change (such as mine in the 'history' section), is simply not the way to go. I invite you to work on the *current* article and make changes to what you think is wrong with it, not simply assume that the whole article was better the last time you edited it and revert to that. In short, please do not revert good edits with bad ones, that's quite disrespectful of the people who volunteer their time to the project, however minor their contributions may be, and it does not help improving an article. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
